Roller is a Autobot scout car in Generation 1 continuity.
It's Optimus Prime's is composed of two autonomous modules. The "Optimus" robot module, and "Prime," also known as Roller, a small cart-shaped device that he uses to unobtrusively slip behind enemy lines.
Optimus can maintain radio control over Roller at distances up to 1200 miles. Having Roller present somewhere is like being there himself. Roller "speaks" in a series of electronic beeps and whistles.

Early Origins
Back when Optimus Prime was Orion Pax, he was composed of two autonomous units as well. Barrelroller was an Industrial Droid that could transform into an electromangetic lift handle for use in Orion's job doing delivery work at the Energon Storehouses.
It seems likely that when Orion Pax weas rebuilt as Optimus Prime, Barrelroller was rebuilt as Roller.
