Smokescreen (Cybertron)

Smokescreen is an Autobot from the Cybertron portion of the Unicron Trilogy continuity family.

He's a joker, he's a smoker, but the jury is still out on him being a midnight toker.

Smokescreen is a real joker. He's always ready with a quip or glib comment for his pals. He keeps the mood on his team light even in the darkest of situations.

For the Decepticons, however, he has a plethora of mean practical jokes that range from simply annoying to lethal. Many Decepticons have found themselves trapped in unexpected traffic, then ambushed by the Autobots, all thanks to Smokescreen's chicanery.

Sometimes he is partnered with Jolt.

During the Unicron Singularity crisis, Smokescreen served aboard the Autobot flagship Iron Hope. He was called into action during a Decepticon attack on the ship, and battled a number of Divebomb and Insecticon-type Terrorcons alongside Riptide, Ironhide, and the Land Military Mini-Con Team. In Aurex 606.0 Kappa, Smokescreen fought with his Mini-Con partner Jolt, Red Alert, Longarm, and the Emergency Mini-Con Team in a battle against the Decepticons Landslide, Smokescreen's archenemy Drench, and Wind Sheer. Smokescreen was to be a redeco of Armada Hot Shot, specifically the slightly-retooled "Powerlinx" Hot Shot mold, coming with a redeco of the Mini-Con Jolt, as part of a planned Universe "Battle in a Box" set with Drench and Wind Sheer.

Though tentatively a Target store exclusive (according to Hasbro representatives at OTFCC 2004 and a checklist later posted on Hasbro's public website which included several unreleased toys), alas, the set was ultimately canceled.

In 2004, several test shots appeared on eBay in a group, Smokescreen among them.

Part of the ninth and final wave of Cybertron Deluxe Class figures, Smokescreen is a redeco of Cybertron Crosswise, transforming into a Bugatti EB 15.4 Veyron sports car (a very, very expensive limited-production, built-to-order series of cars). Plugging a Cyber Key into the back end of his bumper flips up a pair of non-firing rocket launchers, a feature also usable in robot mode where the launchers flip up over his shoulders. His rear spoiler also contains a spring-loaded missile launcher which becomes a hand-held weapon in robot mode. The rear side-panels can flip around to the front to form non-firing hip-mounted guns as well.

This mold was also used to make 2007 movie Jolt, and was retooled to make BotCon 2008's Shattered Glass Jazz and Ricochet.

Notes

• Though Cybertron Smokescreen is obviously an homage to Generation 1 Smokescreen, according to Joe Kyde, his deco artist, his robot mode is also an homage to the Action Master Rad, taking various color elements, particularly the helmet.
• It's possible the reason "Smokescreen" was chosen as the theme of the Cybertron redeco was because "Smokescreen" was an early name for the base mold, Crosswise. Crosswise was also called "Smokescreen" in his early appearances on the Cybertron cartoon, but these episodes were subsequently edited to give him his correct name.
• The original Hasbro stock photos and test shots of Cybertron Smokescreen gave him colorless clear plastic windows and flame-missile. In the final version, they have a blue tint.
