The mode lock is a handy way to restrain a prisoner. When affixed it prevents the affected Transformer from transforming out of their alternate mode or taking any independent action except speaking. It also can be tracked to a radius of 50,000 miles. A mode locked Transformer can be controlled by radio.

The Protectobots used a mode lock on the captured "renegade" Blaster to safely transport him back to the Ark. An unexpected encounter with the Combaticons allowed Blaster the chance to convince some humans to remove it and save their lives. Skids awoke on a mysterious shuttle with a mode lock placed on its controls and watched as the lock deactivated and the shuttle began to transform. G.H.O.S.T. used restraining bolts that could force a Transformer into their alternate mode and lock them in it. Though Megatron found their use barbaric, Optimus Prime used them to trap Ravage, Frenzy and Laserbeak in their cassette modes.
