The Generation 1 franchise encompasses many types of fiction, but none have been as prolific as its various comic-book series. They include:
- 1984-1991: The Transformers — The original Transformers comic book series, published by Marvel Comics and Marvel UK in the 1980s and later reprinted by Titan Books and IDW Publishing. It also spawned sequel series under the Generation 2 and Classics franchises.
- 1987: Transformers in 3-D — The very short-lived Blackthorne Publishing series printed in stereoscopic 3D.
- 2002-2004: Generation One — Several miniseries and an ongoing series published by Dreamwave Productions. The series ended with Dreamwave's bankruptcy.
- 2003: G.I. Joe vs. the Transformers — Four miniseries by Devil's Due crossing the Generation 1 and G.I. Joe franchises.
- 2004: Transformers/G.I. Joe — Dreamwave's own Generation 1 / G.I. Joe crossover, cut short during its second miniseries by bankruptcy.
- 2006-present: Transformers — IDW's robust collection of miniseries and one-shots which continue to be produced to this day and are slated to transition into a proper ongoing.
