The Transformers investigate a potential source of Energon. But who's studying who?
Synopsis
Ultra Magnus leaves Hot Rod in charge on Cybertron and goes to check out an Energon-rich asteroid in Fortress Maximus. Meanwhile the Decepticons are closing in on the same asteroid from the opposite direction in Scorponok, while Cyclonus grumbles about how Ratbat seems to have become Galvatron's favored pet. Lightspeed and Cyclonus leave their respective bases in search of the Energon traces they've detected, and find small organic creatures.
Galvatron is infuriated and abuses Cyclonus until he leaves to conduct experiment on the hapless creature he found. Ultra Magnus is happy to let Lightspeed test the creature brought back to Fort Max. In the meanwhile, Magnus checks in with Hot Rod, who reports they're making progress on Headmaster technology. Over in Scorponok, Galvatron contacts Sixshot, who's preparing to make things exciting for Hot Rod.
Cyclonus and Lightspeed, working independently, both discover that the creatures have digestive systems which process raw matter into Energon. The Autobots send Searchlight out to see if they can find any more of the creatures, and he stumbles on Scorponok. At the same time, Galvatron sends Ratbat out, and the diminutive Decepticon happens on Fortress Maximus. The Autobots quickly detect him and give chase. Searchlight trips one of Scorponok's alarms, so the Decepticons begin pursuing him.
Both parties run into each other at the middle point between the two bases, and before long, Maximus and Scorponok have joined the battle. "CYCLONUS, YOU COLOSSAL IDIOT!!"
- —Cyclonus and Galvatron
"Ah, Scourge, did you ever get the feeling you've reached the epitome of evil?"
- —Galvatron
"Autobots! Head for cover! I'll watch your behinds!"
"Every Decepticon for himself!"

Errors
- Galvatron seems amazed that they've discovered "a source of true Energon just inside our galaxy!" Wow! Who knew Energon was so scarce you had to go to other galaxies to find it?
Items of note
- The interior notes state that this issue is "Blackthorne 3-D Series #25".
- Although Fortress Maximus and Scorponok are featured, Headmasters (as such) appear not to have been created yet. Hot Rod makes a reference to "making some progress" on the technology, having found a planet (apparently Nebulos) "with the proper capability about 7 parsecs away."
- Hot Rod also makes a strange comment that "Rodimus" would show up if there's trouble...like Clark Kent knowing Superman's nearby...real nearby.
