- The Armor of Unicron is a material from the Cybertron portion of the Unicron Trilogy continuity family.
Megatron has always sought power at every turn, and this is one of the most striking examples of success. After escaping from the collapsing Energon Sun created to contain Unicron's spark, he had stolen most of what remained of the Chaos-Bringer's power, and his body had been rebuilt with salvaged pieces of the destroyer's armor.
Fiction
Cybertron cartoon
The armor made Megatron very powerful, gradually increasing his power level over time Hero, and healing him much faster than typical self-repair systems. It apparently enabled him to wield dark energies in battle, usually manifesting as lightning from Megatron's hands. In times of great stress, the Decepticon leader could even manifest an aura of pure Energon from his armor, vastly increasing his power.
It is presumably what generated Megatron's Cyber Key, enabling him to access an arm-mounted blade weapon. Following Starscream's theft of the Omega Lock, the armor picked up on stray power emitting from the Lock to unlock a new Cyber Key weapon, the Death Machine Gun, which Megatron used to pummel Scattorshot, Red Alert, and Hot Shot to the brink of death. Revelation
When Vector Prime collapsed Megatron's firey pocket dimension in on itself, Megatron used the full power of the Armor of Unicron to rip open the fabric of reality in a bid to escape. Using the armor in this way left it unable to defend its wearer from a blast from the Omega Lock, and it was seemingly destroyed with Megatron when the dimension collapsed on him. Cybertron Soon after, however, it was revealed that the residual power of Unicron within the armor allowed Megatron to endure, sustaining his spark and form as a noncorporeal "ghost" that appeared on Cybertron in the midst of a battle. Balance In this state, it enabled him to absorb the energy of attacks-and of Transformers themselves-to regenerate his body, as well as upgrade others into stronger forms. After his full revival, Megatron used the remnants of his "ghost" to create an entirely new being, from nothing but the dark thoughts of Leobreaker. Darkness
Later on, after a humiliating defeat by Metroplex that also destroyed Nemesis Breaker, the armor allowed Megatron to remotely tap the power of Gigantion's Cyber Planet Key to become Galvatron once again. Fury In this state, he was powerful enough to stop Sparkdrinker with a single finger, and only needed one hand to block it after Metroplex powered it up. The armor was still damaged by Optimus Prime when he wielded Sparkdrinker against Galvatron, forcing the Decepticon leader to retreat.
The armor's power, along with Galvatron's own, would be pitted against the full power of Optimus Prime in a final battle. Galvatron had the advantage for much of the battle-unveiling a new transformation into a powerful artillery platform, bombarding Prime's teammates with shadowy lightning, and generating a sword of pure darkness-but when the Autobot leader combined his own power with that of Vector Prime's sword Rhisling and the Matrix of Leadership the Armor of Unicron was overcome at last. Galvatron perished, this time for good. Unfinished
Notes
- The Armor of Unicron was invented for the Cybertron dub and did not exist in Galaxy Force; since Galaxy Force was not originally in the same continuity as Micron Legend and Super Link, there was no need to explain how Megatron was able to survive after plunging himself into the Energon sun. However, this does not change the fact that either way, the armor greatly resembles Unicron.
- Oddly enough, Megatron himself displays somewhat Unicron-esque behavior: he seeks to destroy all of existence (albeit with plans to remake it in his own image); he acquires most of his minions through trickery or bribery, seeing said minions as expendable tools only used towards his ultimate goal; and he has the ability to upgrade and outright create new bodies with his powers. Of course, quite a bit of this is still very Megatron-like, but it does stand to reason that fusing himself with Unicron's remains may well have imbued a portion of the Chaos-Bringer's personality into Megatron.
- The Armor of Unicron is an extremely ironic reversal, as Unicron and his agents spent much of Armada and Energon manipulating Megatron. In the latter half of Energon, the Chaos-Bringer even possessed Megatron directly.
