Superion Maximus is an Autobot from the Energon portion of the Unicron Trilogy continuity family.
His name is Superion Maximus. Hey, didn't he say his name is Superion Maximus? Superion Maximus? Is that his name? Who are you again? Was it Superion Maximus? Superion Maximus.

Superion Maximus is a living legend. One of four ancient, mighty Combiner robots chosen to guard the Super Energon pools deep within Cybertron, he and his peers were awakened from countless years of stasis by Galvatron as his brother was destroyed. Superion Maximus joined the noble Autobots, and his vengeance on his two Decepticon counterparts would undoubtedly be recorded in the annals of Cybertronian history.

Unfortunately, no one can remember his name. He doesn't seem to mind. After all, at least he knows his name.

He is the combined form of the Air Team:

You dirty rat. You killed my brother.

After the first defeat of Unicron, Omega Supreme and the four guardian combiners fell into a deep stasis, ending the first age of Cybertron. The four combiners were chosen to guard an ancient fuel at the core of Cybertron known as Super Energon. As stated by Megatron, they seemed to have actually fought to a standstill and slipped into stasis while attending their duty.

Possibly acting as a living seal to lock the Super Energon away, the death of Superion's brother caused them to return to life. This also cause the Super Energon to reveal itself, and fill the pool below. Ambition Superion Maximus informed Megatron that the Super Energon was not to be used for any one individual's goals; rather it was for the future of all transformers. Megatron scoffed at this, proclaiming himself to be the future of all transformers. Superion continued to try and dissuade Megatron from bathing in the Super Energon pool, believing no one could survive being submerged within it. But taking a dip in it only made Megatron more powerful, reformatting him into "Galvatron." Rather than pledge his allegiance to the Decepticons as Constructicon Maximus and Bruticus Maximus did, Superion Maximus split into his component pieces and fled. Despite the other two combiners giving him chase, Superion Maximus managed to join up with Optimus Prime's Autobots. He convinced them he was on their side by saving Kicker from Starscream. Wishes

But the Autobots were no longer able to enter Cybertron's atmosphere after Galvatron unleashed toxic energon gas into it. The Miranda II moved to the upper atmosphere, where the Autobots prepared to drop Kicker and the Omnicons (who were immune to the energon gas) down to the world below. During the mission briefing, Superion Maximus found the other Autobots' banter amusing, but was too socially awkward to join in on their conversations.

As the Miranda II moved down to drop off the scouting party, it took a hit from the planetary defense systems. Kicker fell out of the passenger hold, and plummeted down towards Cybertron. Thankfully, Superion Maximus was quick enough to swoop down and catch him. The Decepticons then attacked the spaceship, and both Bruticus Maximus and Constructicon Maximus were all too eager to once again double-team Superion Maximus. But Omega Supreme stepped in, and took on Bruticus Maximus to even out the odds. Another blast from the planet's surface brought the Miranda II down for good. The Autobot fled back into orbit, Superion Maximus rescuing Downshift after the pilot had guided the Miranda II into a controlled crash. Galvatron!

When Kicker and the Omnicons opened a gap in the cloud layer of the energon gas, Superion Maximus descended to the planet below with Optimus Prime's team. They met up with a small band of Autobot soldiers and fled underground to avoid the full effects of the gas. Break Through

During a virtual training match between the Autobots and Decepticons, Superion Maximus fought both Bruticus Maximus and Constructicon Maximus, but predictably lost the two-on-one match. Distribution

After meeting up with Wing Saber's ragtag group of resistance fighters, the Autobots separated into several teams. Optimus and Superion Maximus kept Bruticus Maximus and Constructicon Maximus busy in battle while the other groups rescued their allies around the planet. Though they were nearly destroyed when Six Shot tried to take another shot at Optimus with the Energon grid, Galvatron put an end to his subordinate's attempt to kill Optimus himself, allowing both Autobots to escape. The Omega Train Optimus then sent Superion Maximus off to meet up with Kicker while he faced Galvatron. But Superion Maximus returned prematurely to find Optimus about to be slaughtered by the Decepticon forces. Alongside the Prime Force and Omega Supreme, he helped even the odds until further Autobot reinforcements arrived and drove away the enemy 'bots. Decepticon Army The Autobots continued to struggle with the Decepticons on the surface, until the efforts of Dr. Jones and the Omnicons recharged Primus at Cybertron's core, allowing them to fight back without worrying about energon gas being unleashed on the battlefield. Ironhide Team But Six Shot found a way to turn the situation to the Decepticons' advantage once more; by allowing the energon gas build up underground, he engineered an enormous explosion that sent Superion Maximus and those fighting alongside him into space. Superion managed to save Downshift from being destroyed in the blast, but was damaged and left unconscious for a time, adrift in space. After he awoke, Superion Maximus the others resolutely continued to fight, assaulting the energon towers to prevent Cybertron from destroying the planets it was passing by through space. Formidable

Superion Maximus came upon Galvatron after he had submerged himself into the super energon pool a second time, causing him to grow to enormous proportions. Galvatron then launched himself into space, dragging Cybertron behind him with a tether of super energon. While a team headed by Kicker severed the tether, Superion Maximus's team continued to make war against the Decepticons around Galvatron, fluttering around the Decepticon leader like skirmishing insects. Destructive Power

Superion Maximus met his apparent demise after a final encounter with Bruticus Maximus and Constructicon Maximus. During that battle, he destroyed Constructicon Maximus, pinning him to a wall by ejecting his four limbs and physically attacking his spark. Angered, Bruticus Maximus attacked him and began to crush him in his hands. Just as it seemed hopeless, a ghost-like entity appeared and shot off Bruticus's arm, freeing Superion. It was an apparation of Superion Maximus's older brother.

Ever walk a mile in another man's limbs?

Superion Maximus, now reduced to just the central combiner robot, powerlinked with Constructicon Maximus's limbs and attacked the confused Bruticus, piercing his spark, and causing a massive explosion which destroyed the remaining Decepticon. Spark

Superion was last seen lying against the wall where Constructicon Maximus was killed earlier, still powerlinked to his limbs. His eyes showed a flicker of light as the Energon Sun exploded nearby, bathing the universe in light. The Sun

Superion Maximus is composed of his five team members, with Storm Jet forming his central body component. His limbs' energon weapons form his hands and feet. Similarly to Generation 1's Scramble City-style combiner teams, Superion Maximus (as well as Bruticus Maximus and Constructicon Maximus) feature universal connection points for the limbs, allowing many different combinations and even swapping of limbs from different teams. Any limb-combination is Superion Maximus, so long as Storm Jet is the torso.
Only Storm Jet, Sky Shadow and Treadshot were initially released in 2004 for the North American, Asian and Australasian markets, with Terradive and Windrazor released later in 2005. This unfortunately led to many consumers having an incomplete Superion Maximus for many months.
In Japan, the five components were only made available as a single gift set, never as individuals.
Superion Maximus was later redecoed into Universe (2008) Superion, as well as the identical Target exclusive Revenge of the Fallen Superion.
The picture to the right has Sky Shadow backwards (Superion's right leg).

Notes

  • In Super Link, there was a running gag involving the Autobots being unable to remember Superion's name, requiring him to reintroduce himself over and over, to hopefully comedic effect. Needless to say, this was fumbled in the English translation and in the delivery of the lines, which resulted in some seemingly random yet obnoxious name-dropping from Superion Maximus.
  • Like the other two Energon "Maximus" combiners, the five component robots of Superion Maximus are made from only three molds: a central Deluxe torso, and two Basic limbs with two color schemes each. According to Hasbro representatives at BotCon 2005, this was done because the budget for the tail-end of Energon allowed for only nine-to-ten new molds, so they had the choice of two groups of five, or three groups of three. They went with the latter.
  • While the show uses the official configuration for Terradive's arm mode with the blue piece attached to the gun barrel, the product catalogue at the top as well as Suprion Maximus' stock photo instead opts to unfold and attach that piece into the peghole on top of the plane, thus simulating two fingers and thumb (the gunbarrel).
