Many years before the war, Breakaway was a member of Optimus's Science Division, working on excavation site LT34 near the temple of Simfur. He was present when the team excavated an ancient relic and for the subsequent argument between Optimus and Protector Megatron. Defiance #1 He loyally stayed at Optimus's side when Megatron demanded that all of Cybertron fall under his command so they could wage war on the aliens who attacked Cybertron. Defiance #2 Defiance #4

Millions of years later, after the defeat of Megatron on Earth, Starscream retreated to Cybertron with plans to reconstruct the AllSpark. Arcee followed him and put together a team to stop the Decepticon's mad designs, of which Breakaway was a member. He partnered up with Strongarm for their assault on the city of Trypticon. The Reign of Starscream #4 The Reign of Starscream #5
Breakaway accompanied Arcee and Clocker on an unspecified mission. Their ship was shot down by Thundercracker and landed on an unknown planet. Arcee lost consciousness thanks to damage sustained in the crash, leaving Breakaway and Clocker to fight off the attacking Decepticon. When Arcee came back online, only Thundercracker was still functional. Tales of the Fallen #6
Which was handy 'cos it meant he couldn't be confused with the other Breakaway!
Toys
Transformers (2007)

- Breakaway (Deluxe, 2008)
- Accessories: Grenade rifle, missile, Cyber key
- A Walmart-exclusive redeco of Cybertron Hot Shot with a color scheme inspired by Generation 1 Getaway,[1] Breakaway transforms into a modified white Chrysler ME Four-Twelve concept car. He comes with a clear-red Cybertron-Autobot key that deploys transparent red wings from his spoiler when the key is inserted into the rear of the car. The toy also comes with a spring-loaded, missile-launching gun that can be carried in robot mode or pegged into the roof of the car mode.
- This mold was also used to make Cybertron Excellion and retooled to make Shattered Glass Goldbug.
Notes
- Breakaway (along with Crankcase and Fracture) was originally designed for the 2008 Universe line as a new version of Generation 1 Getaway, but the name did not clear trademark and Walmart insisted that he be placed into the Movie line instead (their logic being that the old Universe line eventually failed in the market, while the Movie line was a dramatic hit). The same is true for Big Daddy, Grindcore, Jolt and Divebomb, if this Hasbro product listing is any indication.
