Breakaway is an Autobot from the Revenge of the Fallen portion of the movie continuity family.
I'll take a risk, take a chance, make a change...

In an army dominated by the ground bound, Breakaway stands out as an Autobot with flight capabilities. Not only that, but in a straight line, there aren't many fliers that keep up with him. In battle he uses this to his advantage, dispensing with any aerial acrobatics, and simply relying on bombing runs at supersonic speeds to get the job done.

He has the cutest little face in the world.

Like they taught me back in flight school: hit 'em hard and hit 'em fast!{{#if:|{{{quote2}}}}}{{#if:BreakawayRevenge of the Fallen (Xbox 360/PS3/PC)|Breakaway{{#if:Revenge of the Fallen (Xbox 360/PS3/PC)|, Revenge of the Fallen (Xbox 360/PS3/PC)|}}|}}

As one of the "two newest Autobot recruits on Earth", Breakaway joined Longarm in hunting down Sideways and Rampage. While Longarm chased Sideways through the streets, the Autobot aerial ace found himself evenly matched by Rampage's raw power. Autobot Strike Mission toy bio

"They're called orders, Maverick!"

When NEST learned of several odd spark traces near a ruined Kingdom Petrochemicals plant in Florida, Breakaway was sent to scout ahead for his grounded partners. While he found no sign of Decepticons on site, there was some human activity, and he asked Bumblebee if he should "take a more active interest". Bumblebee ordered him to just keep watching, which he did until Decepticon activity showed up in the form of Soundwave.

Way broken.

Breakaway immediately went on the offensive against the airborne Decepticon, who calmly asked him to leave. When Breakaway refused, Soundwave returned fire, destroying the Autobot with a single powerful blast. Nefarious #1

Autobot campaign
[edit]

Breakaway was the Autobots' sole flier. He possessed a fusion beam sniper rifle that allowed for precision, long range attacks. His secondary weapon was a burst mini gun. Additionally, he could also release a heatwave which would overheat Decepticon weapons, allowing Breakaway to fight them hand to hand. He was always the one to report the results of each mission and was in the communications window more often than any other Autobot.

One of the newer Autobot arrivals to Earth, he and Bumblebee were put to training by Ironhide in Sam Witwicky's hometown of Tranquility.

"And away we go!"

When the Decepticons assembled a force to resurrect Megatron using an AllSpark shard stolen by Ravage, Breakaway, being the only flier at the time, was the sole Autobot able to assist the besieged United States Navy fleet assigned to guard the area. Following his arrival, he began fixing their anti-aircraft guns to dispose of the Seeker forces attacking the ships, fighting Constructicon drones off. Once the guns were repaired, Breakaway rescued several injured sailors that needed evac to their medical center in the radar station built for the fleet. Despite all this effort, the Constructicons managed to reactivate Megatron, and the Decepticons were once again a serious threat to Earth.

After Sam Witwicky left for Egypt with Jetfire, the Decepticons launched a cloaked probe to locate the boy. Breakaway was dispatched to track down and destroy the probe. He succeeded, but discovered that there was a second probe cloaked by the first. Breakaway managed to destroy the probe before it could pick up Sam's trail. Revenge of the Fallen (Xbox 360/PS3/PC)

Stratosphere was tasked with carrying home early MechTech samples for safekeeping and was intercepted by Starscream, who was ordered to destroy it. Thankfully, Stratosphere was escorted by the Aerialbots, and when Starscream had proven too potent a threat, the Aerialbots Breakaway, Silverbolt, and Air Raid exited Stratosphere's cargo area to battle Starscream. Unfortunately, after a lengthy dogfight, all three Aerialbots were defeated. Dark of the Moon (Xbox 360/PS3)

  • Breakaway (Deluxe Class, 2009)
  • Japanese ID number: RA-05
  • Known designers: Alex Kubalsky (TakaraTomy){{#if: |, {{{2}}}}}
Revenge of the Fallen Breakaway transforms into an approximation of an [[wikipedia:{{#if:|:}}F-35 Lightning II|{{#if:F-35 Lightning II/Joint Strike Fighter|F-35 Lightning II/Joint Strike Fighter|F-35 Lightning II}}]]. His right arm features a rotary cannon with rotating barrel, activated by a gear-wheel embedded in his forearm. His Mech-Alive gimmick is located in his upper arms; turning his forearms makes the green gears turn. Breakaway does have a waist joint, but turning it is impossible because the tail fin (attached to his waist) hooks into his back. Surprisingly, unlike most Deluxe figures, he actually has rolling landing gear.
Due to a design issue, Breakaway's head always looks skyward while in robot mode and has limited side-to-side articulation. This is respectively because his chin is blocked in place by a clear plastic piece of the jet mode's canopy in front of him, and because his head is sunken too deep into his cockpit, meaning the sides of the cockpit get in the way. While it is not possible to prevent him from looking skyward without disassembling the toy and shaving the canopy, his head is actually mounted on a hinged strut that's been pushed down, meaning it is possible to bring his head out and at least restore his side-to-side articulation by wiggling and pulling his head up until the hinges give way.
Amusingly, the location of his head makes it look like he is riding himself in jet mode.
Along with Sideways, Breakaway was initially released in two color schemes, a tan version and a less common dark bronze/gold version with additional green paint on its forearms.
Breakaway was retooled to make Revenge of the Fallen Thrust and Dark of the Moon Air Raid.

"'Oh look at us, we were in the films!' Bastards! NOBBLE 'EM, LONGARM!"
  • Autobot Strike Mission (Deluxe Class 4-pack, 2009)
Available as a Sam's Club exclusive, the darker variant of Breakaway was packed with Movie Longarm, Rampage and a "battle damaged" version of Sideways.

Notes

[edit]
And now you know where the green and blue came from on the toy.
  • Breakaway was apparently going to be in the Revenge of the Fallen movie at one point, accounting for getting a toy in the first wave of the toyline and being one of the five core Autobots of the video game. Ben Procter designed his robot mode under the working name Firestorm.<ref name="procter">Ben Procter's concept designs for ROTF</ref> This working name was used as the filename for his character file in the Revenge of the Fallen game.
  • The English text on the European packaging says Breakaway "flies over flights". Oh dear.
