Top Gear

Top Gear is a Unicron-allied Mini-Con from the Micron Densetsu portion of the Unicron Trilogy continuity family.
Black Stig is baffled by Human food.

Top Gear (トップギア Toppu Gia) is one of Unicron's many hunters. He is a seemingly emotionless, pitiless, and above all relentless being, who will track a target down no matter what. But he's also smart enough to know when to back off and count his losses. He may or may not be the leader of the Speed Chaser Team; he and Midship seem to both pull rank.

Unsurprisingly, he has nothing to do with the hit BBC show, or the popular SNES video game for the matter.

Fiction

Linkage

Top Gear arrived on Earth in search of "renegade" Mini-Cons who did not serve Unicron, and quickly tracked down Tailslide near Portland, Oregon. Ignoring the pleas of his fellow Mini-Con, Top Gear used a Fixer Bug to reformat him into a minion of Unicron. Linkage Part 2 Together with Midship, he then confronted the Super Stunt Team in India. Linkage Part 3 The battle was eventually interrupted by Scavenger, and Top Gear called for a retreat. The Speed Chaser Team merged into the Magnawing and flew off, figuring that they could capture the Super Stunt Team some other time. Linkage Part 4

In Magnawing mode, the Speed Chaser Team attacked Falcia in the sky above Seattle, but were chased off by a ticked-off Combusta. Linkage Part 6 As part of a new plan, Top Gear was later given the Doomstone by Mirror. Linkage Part 8 The gem was installed on Ravenus, whom the Speed Chaser Team then unleashed on the Super Stunt Team and their allies. Linkage Part 9 After Ravenus captured two Mini-Cons, they withdrew in Magnawing mode and ordered the bulk to follow. Linkage Part 10 They ended up being blasted aside by a super-powered Redline. Linkage Part 11 Top Gear and the others watched as Mini-Cons woke up all over Earth, and realized that there were way more of them than they had thought. Linkage Part 12

The Speed Chaser Team were among the loyal Mini-Cons who defended Unicron during his battle against the entire population of Cybertron. Exactly what happened to Top Gear afterwards is unknown, but considering Unicron lost, things probably didn't end well for him. Linkage Part 13

Toys

Micron Densetsu

Some say that he is made of plastic and screws, and that he never got a Hasbro release—All we know is, he's NOT the Stig, but he is the Stig's transformable cousin.
Top Gear is a redeco of the Armada Mirage mold, transforming into a Formula-1-style race car. He can also form the front end of the Speed Chaser Team's combined Magnawing mode. He was only available with Volume 2 of the Micron Densetsu DVD series in Japan, and came with an exclusive "Linkage" mini-comic. Later pressings of the disc, however, did not include the toy or comic.
This mold was also similar to the mold used to make Armada Swindle and Zapmaster.

Notes

  • According to Linkage author Hirofumi Ichikawa, Top Gear was not part of the crew of the Exodus; he is a newly-created Mini-Con sent to Earth by Unicron.
