Sludge and Snarl were old friends of Grimlock's. They joined him on Earth for a mission that involved retrieving a crashed spaceship, and were unimpressed when Grimlock brought along Hoist as part of the mission. They set about trying to pull the ship free with a vine, only for Hoist to stop them as the movement was endangering a human village on the other side of the cliff. The Dinobots were skeptical, but followed Hoist's instructions to build a makeshift crane, and were able to safely take the ship to the Rescue Bot Academy where they were inclined to name Hoist an honorary Dinobot. They were keen to impress Hoist after last time, and changed straight in, however, their blundering caused the mine to become even more unstable. Though they succeeded in finding the energon, the mine collapsed, and they were forced to follow Hoist's plan to get them all out. The Great Energon Rush
Notes
Two Sludges?
For years, the "Aligned" continuity was meant to be one big ongoing timeline with a bit of squinting: War for Cybertron Soundwave was the same character as Prime Soundwave, etc. By Robots in Disguise, however, auxiliary works of fiction such as the War for Cybertron games were disregarded in favor of a new narrative based solely on the Prime cartoon. Most prominently, this led to the introduction of a Grimlock whose appearance and personality varied wildly from the same guy who appeared in the Fall of Cybertron video game and tie-in comics.
This was creative decision was an irreconcilable dichotomy that carried over to other characters sharing names with characters featured in the games, (See Grimlock's page for more on this) including Sludge. While this change led to greater narrative freedom moving forward, it also confused fans who had grown used to seeing Aligned as a single, more-or-less consistent universe. As a result of this, we now consider Fall of Cybertron Sludge and Rescue Bots Academy Sludge as separate entities.
