Smileduck

Smileduck is a Beastformer from the Generation 1 continuity family.

Everybody likes Smileduck (スマイルダック Sumairudakku). They can't help it. This bubbly bird is an endless font of energy and good vibes, and his happiness is infectious. Kind, caring, thoughtful, and amazingly patient, he lives to spread cheer. As the Emperor of Tell es-Sawwan, he makes sure to keep the often-dour King Yellow Camelus smiling.

He's not much of a fighter, being fairly weak and not a fan of violence in the first place, but his boundless energy, quick speed and quicker wit make him unpredictable in combat. And he's as adept in water as he is on land. On top of that, his Smilon weapon (スマイロン Sumairon) can transmit psychic waves that suppress anger and negative emotions, lightening the mood of his opponent and making them less likely to continue the fight.

Part of the second series of Takara's Beastformers toys, Smileduck is a yellow anthropomorphic duck in light blue robotic armor. His left arm ends in a curved blade. The rubsign on his chest reveals one of three symbols; Fire, Water or Wood.

He came in a green-grid generic "Cybertron Beastformer" box, with a bio card with a painted character image on a jungle backdrop. Re-released in Series 3, the box was unchanged, but the bio card replaced the painted image with a simpler line-art image, first used in Hasbro's Battle Beasts cast poster. In both Series, depending on the "Pack" he came in, there was a chance of his bio card being replaced with a rare "Secret Photo", "Bewitching Serpent Seal", or "VS Holography Mirror" card.

Re-released in the Transformers-less Beastformers sequel series, Smileduck was given a straight re-release with new packaging and a new, more filled-out bio card with corrected coloring. This new card also gave his weapon, now branded an "MVP Weapon", the name "Smilon".

The initial early releases of this series had the chance for any Beastformer to have the rare Burstsun symbol; we'll probably never know if Smileduck was ever actually one of them. Later in the run, the "mood ring" styled rubsigns were replaced with new rubsigns that revealed full-color Fire/Wood/Water images on black backdrops. (These rubsign variants also happened at the same time in the Hasbro Battle Beast version of the line.)

Notes

• Smileduck's fluffy yellow feathers would indicate he's actually a duckling, as no adult duck is yellow. On the other hand, this is also a world with blue horses, pink weasels and lavender moles, so.
• His 1988 bio card gives him the nickname "Smiley" (スマイリー Sumairī), and notes he was born in Camela Bay.
