The war had its roots in Cybertron's Age of Expansion. Exarchon, a trusted and respected figure amongst the Cybertronian race, travelled into space beyond Cybertron, and was subsequently "corrupted" by someone or something, fracturing his psyche and leading the demented 'bot to declare war against the entirety of Cybertron. The Change In Your Nature Part Three Exarchon's entire physiology had been changed to something like a biological virus, capable of "usurping" another Cybertronian entirely, killing the original being. While their reasoning was unknown, many on Cybertron would come to believe Exarchon's change was a deliberate response to Cybertronian expansionism. However, while Exarchon was only capable of maintaining his focus across three bodies at a time, he had a habit of changing 'iterations' with some frequency. Darkness, Once Gazed Upon: Part One
His army utilized exotic and arcane technologies, The Change In Your Nature Part Three evidently given to him by the same party responsible for his alteration, Darkness, Once Gazed Upon: Part One and the ruthless science of Shockwave. Escape Part Two One such example was an attempt at cloning Skywarp's unique teleportation powers. It failed to replicate his abilities, but it did produce a massive clone-drone army which Exarchon used to to sweep across Cybertron. The Change In Your Nature Part Three Escape Part Three Nominus Prime responded to this by creating an army of Seekers to match them. Escape Part Three Unless he was certain that he'd won the battle, Exarchon rarely took to the battlefield himself. The Change In Your Nature Part Three
Four "Great Generals" coordinated the war against Exarchon's forces: Ultra Magnus, Strika, Dai Atlas, and Pyra Magna. Strika led a famous heavy artillery battalion that included Warpath, Flak, and Blitzwing. The Change In Your Nature Part Three Ultra Magnus led from the front and counted a young Megatron among his ranks. Storm Horizon Part 1 Other notable combatants in the war included Arcee (who assassinated one of Exarchon's iterations), Arcee/Greenlight: Run Quake, Cyclonus, Highfire, Gridlock, Grudge, Provoke, The World In Your Eyes Part Three Skytread, Refraktor, The Cracks Beneath Your Feet Part Two Kup, The Change In Your Nature Part Two Orion Pax, Orion Pax: Free Fall and Turmoil. War World: We Are Not Meant To Be Darkness The amount of dead bodies the war produced allowed the Insecticons to gorge themselves stupid. Constructicons Rising, Part 2 In the meantime, the trio approached Shockwave in the hopes the amoral scientist would create a clone army for them to devour all of Cybertron. Escape Part Two
During the war, Exarchon attempted to "usurp" the Titans, only succeeding with Croaton, necessitating the latter's destruction at the hands of Citadel Wheeljack: Orbital Decay War World: Titans As a result, the remaining Titans were kept out of the rest of the war. Turmoil, one of the few Cybertronians to serve Exarchon willingly, melted the world of Neutronia in passing on his return to Cybertron, killing two-thirds of the planet's population. Turmoil would eventually flee the planet entirely, taking several prisoners with him as hostages, including Paragon. War World: We Are Not Meant To Be Darkness Darkness, Once Gazed Upon: Part One
During a battle at Yuss, the city was levelled, and Ultra Magnus's forces routed. Megatron, who had been a participant in the battle, was left behind, where he was found by Exarchon, who had plans for the former miner. Those plans were interrupted by the timely arrival of Strika's forces, who destroyed at least one of Exarchon's selves, though he was saved by the intervention of Skywarp. The Change In Your Nature Part Three
It was not until towards the end of the war that Cybertron learned the specific nature of Exarchon's change. By this point, much of Exarchon's willing followers had been depleted, leaving only the hardcore fanatics. Darkness, Once Gazed Upon: Part One
The final fight of the war took place on the edge of Iacon, ending with the creation of a very large crater, and Exarchon being "gone". Afterwards, the crater was made a dedicated memorial to the war, The Cracks Beneath Your Feet Part Two inscribed with the names of everyone who died in the battle. War World: Hunt Unknown to all, Exarchon had survived the fight, winding up usurping the form of Provoke, buried beneath the memorial crater. Darkness, Once Gazed Upon: Part One By that point, the war had been going on for years and as a result not only Iacon but Cybertron as a whole was in ruin, to the point the engineer Wheeljack despaired about ever being able to rebuild. The noted thinker and engineer Termagax, however, saw the devastation as an opportunity to build something better in place of what had been lost. The newborn Constructicons would earn fame for their contribution to the reconstruction efforts. Constructicons Rising, Part 1
In the aftermath, Nominus Prime issued an amnesty for the remaining servants of the Threefold Spark, an amnesty Pyra Magna refused to accept, seeing those like Turmoil as beyond redemption. Hunt We Are Not Meant To Be Darkness Nominus would go on to draft the Nominus Edict, in an attempt to prevent any further loss befalling Cybertron again. The Cracks Beneath Your Feet Part One The war, and his encounter with Exarchon, would have a profound impact on Megatron and his worldview. The Change In Your Nature Part Three As well as on Dai Atlas, who went immersant to escape the horror he felt at what he had become. Escape Part Three
