Megatron comes back to life, and takes control of the Terrorcons!
Synopsis
[edit]Inferno stands at the ready as a flock of Divebombs swoop down upon Blizzard City. With the help of several laser batteries, recently installed at every Cyber City, he blows all of the aggressors out of the sky. Alpha Quintesson senses that his troops have failed on their raid, and grows angry over the delays to Unicron's reawakening. He is then alerted to a power drain occurring within the chamber where Megatron's remains are at rest... There, Tidal Wave and Cyclonus are apologizing to the inert form of their former leader for their latest failure in acquiring energon. Scorponok is sent to deal with the energon theft, but before he can terminate Megatron, the Decepticon emerges from his resting place, now reformatted in a more powerful form. Megatron pummels down Scorponok and asserts his dominance over him by branding him with the Decepticon badge. Megatron next heads for Alpha Quintesson's chamber, only to find that the multi-faced entity has already fled.
Hot Shot is fending off yet another Terrorcon attack on Plains City when he notices a familiar shape in the enemy crowd... It is brought to the attention of Optimus, Inferno, Ironhide, and Kicker that the attack is unlike the ones they have previously repelled, and they warp over to aid Hot Shot. By the time they arrive, Megatron already stands triumphant over their comrade's battered form. Megatron boasts that he plans to revive Unicron, giving him the power necessary to conquer the Universe. Rather than fight Megatron, wielding the Energon Sword and backed-up by hordes of Terrorcons, Optimus orders his Autobots to withdraw with Hot Shot's body.
Back at Ocean City, Inferno overlooks Hot Shot's reparation cycle. Nearby, Optimus gathers a group of Omnicons and instructs them to create replicas of Megatron's sword based on a scan he took of it in Plains City. The next day, Jetfire suggests that Optimus relieve Demolishor from his guard duty as a precaution; he fears the the former Decepticon will return to Megatron's side. Optimus dismisses these concerns, confident that Demolishor will stay loyal to the Autobots. The conversation is cut short by an alarm blaring throughout the base. A space bridge has opened 19 miles south of the city. While Jetfire investigates, another Space Bridge opens up closer to Ocean City; the previous portal was a diversion! Megatron confronts Demolishor, and though the former Decepticon is emotionally torn for a moment, he quickly returns to the Decepticon cause and blasts open Ocean City's doors. While Optimus heads for the battle-lines, Kicker fetches a cloned Energon Sword from the Omnicons' lab. With the blade in hand, Kicker rushes to deliver it to Optimus, slicing through Terrorcons along the way. Upon seeing the weapon, Megatron grows furious, but is unable to best Optimus while he wields it; both blades are equally powerful. More Autobots join the battle, each one of them wielding another copy of Megatron's sword. Megatron orders the Decepticons to retreat, and though Ironhide pleads with him not to, Demolishor goes with them.
Weeks pass. The lull in between conflicts is broken by a call from Carlos, stationed at Midway Gate Station 08: he has detected an unidentified spacecraft heading towards the energon mines in the asteroid belt, and is unable to contact said mines as someone is blocking his signal. Optimus Prime assembles a team to deal with this situation. Kicker is part of this team, but feels ill-at-ease in the void of space due to a traumatic experience that happened during his childhood. Worse, his ESP proves to be unreliable out in space, and the Autobots are forced to wander about to try and locate Megatron's forces. They eventually come upon the previously-detected vessel: an enormous meteor-like structure, reminiscent of Unicron. The Autobots attack, but the vessel is unaffected by their weapons. They leave Kicker behind so that he will be out of harm's way, but the boy panics over being left alone in zero-gravity. Scorponok then ambushes the Autobots, damaging Jetfire badly. Optimus assumes his super-mode to turn the tide, only to be met by Megatron once more. An alarmed Ironhide informs his leader that the asteroid they are standing atop of is filled with raw energon. Megatron fires directly at the energon, causing a gigantic explosion. The Autobots barely manage to grab Jetfire and escape the blast radius in time. They then retrieve Kicker, and head back to Ocean City.
After their return, Kicker's father heads a meeting, where he tells the Autobots of his new invention: Energon towers. These towers are capable of emitting energon waves, harmful to the Terrorcons. Everyone is glad that they now have the means to fully protect themselves from the Terrorcons, but Optimus admits to Kicker that so long as Megatron lives, he will not allow himself to relax.

Notes
[edit]- This book adapts several episodes of the Transformers: Energon cartoon, with some back story presented at the beginning. It's illustrated with a mix of Dreamwave Productions art and screen captures from the cartoon itself.
- Cybertron is explicitly said to be made out of "living metal."
- Megatron's shoulder-mounted blasters are given a name: "primary pulse cannons."
- Contained withing columns besides the main text are trivia tidbits, both about the world if the Transformers and our own. Trivia about the real world include:
- Tanks
- Berthold Schwarz's invention of the cannon.
- The history of Boxing and Karate
- Lasers and how they work with CDs
- The Red Cross
- Semi-automatic rifles
- X-rays and Casts
- Blackbird aircrafts and Boeing 747 aircrafts
- Blue whales and scuba diving
- DNA and cloning
- Samurai swords and fencing
- The Solar System and the asteroid belt
- Halley's Comet, Asteroids, craters, meteorites, and the extinction of the dinosaurs
- Alexei A. Leonov and other astronauts
- The Earth's atmosphere, its crust and its core
Errors
[edit]- There appears to be some confusion in the text over whether Megatron brought himself back to life, or if Alpha Quintesson is responsible for his reawakening. The story goes back and forth over which situation happened.
- Hot Shot recognizes Megatron's form, even though Megatron has recently reformatted himself into a new body that's completely different from the one Hot Shot would recall.
- Megatron is said to wield the Star Saber, when the illustrations show him brandishing his Energon Sword. The trivia in the book's margins even say that the sword is made of three linked-up Mini-Cons!
- Demolishor is consistently spelled "Demolisher," a common mistake.
