He learned Thrust can be green.

Sam Smith is a former Hasbro Design Manager on the Studio Series, Masterpiece, and mainline Generations (the War for Cybertron Trilogy, Legacy, etc.) toylines. Whether by choice or as a practical consequence of the sheer breadth of modern Generations product, he seemingly utilized a more horizontal command structure than past department heads, taking point on the primary live-action film series component of the Studio Series line and largely leaving the more traditional Generation 1 flavored fare to Associate Designer Evan Brooks and overall Generations design lead Mark Maher. Smith's status as the resident gearhead of the design team may or may not constitute an ulterior motive for this particular division of labor. Before Transformers he worked on Star Wars.

In March 2022, Smith began his "From Screen to Toy" posts on his Instagram page, showcasing digital renders and development notes on his recent and upcoming Studio Series figures, later showcasing his works from other lines as well.

As of October 2022, Smith has returned to Star Wars, where he has moved up to Design Director of preschool product.<ref>Smith's LinkedIn profile</ref>
