The name or term "Universe" refers to more than one character or idea. For a list of other meanings, see Universe (disambiguation).

Transformers Universe is a free to play browser based massively online tactical action game, or MOTA[1] that entered open beta testing July 4, 2014[2]. It is being developed by Jagex and it is set in the Prime portion of the Aligned continuity family. Gamers can choose to be an Autobot or a Decepticon, obtain different characters, and pit them against one another in various challenges and battles to gather Relics and Energon.

It was announced on the 16th December 2014 that the game would begin a phased closure immediately, fully closing on the 31st January 2015, without ever having left beta testing[3]

The gameplay is very similar to other multiplayer battle arena games such as Dota 2 or League of Legends. Although the game features several Prime characters in minor roles, new introductions to the Prime mythos such as Prowl and Switchblade take center stage.

Synopsis

According to creative director Alex DeRakoff, the main story involves Optimus Prime going missing, with the other Autobots trying to keep his location a secret from Megatron, who is travelling across the galaxy with his associates to track down Prime. [4]

In the recent Autobot and Decepticon trailers, an additional segment of the plot was revealed: The Decepticons have intercepted and shot down the Autobot spaceship Arclight, causing the surviving Autobots to crash-land on Earth (mostly the United States) aboard escape pods. This incident prompted the president to order "a national state of emergency and the total evacuation of eleven major cities." Optimus Prime contacted General Freeman, who provided these Autobot refugees with a base of operations. In return, the Autobots vowed to protect human civilization from the Decepticon threat.

Gameplay

There are currently three playable game modes, alongside a fourth "open world" map with no definite objective:

  • Elimination pits Autobots against Decepticons. The first faction to reach 20 kills wins the match.
  • Meteor Storm has both sides try to capture Energon meteor landing sites. The first team that gains 1000 points wins.
  • Crisis is a player-vs-environment mode where teams fight hordes of Terrorcons and gather energon before fighting a final boss.

In addition to these three game modes, players can also access a semi-open world area - High Grand for the Autobots, Central City for the Decepticons - and partake in occasional mini-missions (for instance, killing a set number of Terrorcons or repairing wounded NPCs). Completing these objectives (or partaking in one of the three aforementioned games) will grant the player relics, which can be used to unlock new warriors from the in-game store. Players can also buy, build, or find different components that have different effects in battle.

Notes

  • BotCon 2012 attendees were able to reserve their in-game name at the convention.
  • The game has gone through a couple of genre shifts. Initially slated to be released as an MMORPG with multiple classes and conventional character creation, but the difficulty of customizing robots was cited as part of the reasoning in changing it to the quickly expanding MOBA genre. Right.[10] It has since been declared to be a massively online, tactical action game by Mark Gerhard, CEO/CTO of Jagex.
  • The November 2012 issue of Edge revealed both an early version of Firebreaker and Macro with the descriptors "Oppressor" and "Guardian".[11]
  • On April 25th, 2014, Founders Packs were revealed, along with founder exclusive bonuses and new characters.[12] Each increasingly expensive pack, from Bronze to "Cybernite", grants a three day head start to play the game and various in game bonuses, in addition to season passes of various lengths of time and exclusive warriors. The most expensive at $449.99 dollars, the Cybernite pack also offers a limited edition ten inch diorama figurine showcasing Showdown and Shellshock in combat. Yeesh.
  • Someone named Vectorium is quoted on Anomaly's page on the Transformers Universe website, referring to the green toxic youngster's capabilities in shock. Considering the pattern of the other Transformers Universe bios, all of whom quote pre-existing characters of the same faction, Vectorium is likely another Autobot. Meanwhile, Decepticon Diabla's page quotes a previously unknown Aligned continuity version of Snow Cat.
  • Between June 6-7th, 2014, five unreleased playable characters (Firebreaker, Contagion, Outsider, Cameo and Swagger) were leaked by some TFW2005/TFU forum users who toyed around with the generic link for model images of playable Autobots and Decepticons alike.
  • As of July 4th, 2014, Transformers Universe has reached the Open Beta stage and the NDA was lifted. Additionally, more Bots, such as Rollcage,[13][14] and others (without names) were leaked.[15][16]
  • A veritable cornucopia of information came out on September 5th. Officially announced on that date were a new challenger system and playable characters Outsider and Pandemic due that month along with updated maps. Flamewar and Chromia were revealed to be coming out in October with a new game mode, Recon.[17] In addition, a vast number of character models were found by a dataminer, including early versions of released characters, unrevealed new characters, models with pre-existing character names as placeholders and character models for cast members of Transformers: Prime. New characters included Bombast, Clear-Cut, Backlash, Flood, Stiletto, Pitstop, Pandemic, Breakneck, and Mayday. Prime cast members Knock Out, Bulkhead, Wheeljack, and Breakdown got models, and the in-engine appearance of Barricade was confirmed, turning into an SUV. [18]
  • On December 16th with the announcement that the game would close at the end of January 2015, still in beta[3], Jagex announced that all Founders Pack, relic bundles and starter packs would be refunded. No specific reason has been given as to the reason for the closure.
