Power Core Combination is a technology from Power Core Combiners.

Power Core Combination is a technology that allows Transformers to combine with either Mini-Cons or drone teams. Introduced into the modern day through a joint effort between the Autobots and humankind and subsequently stolen by the Decepticons, the increased spread of the technology's use has seen both factions upgrade many of their existing troops to be able to use the technology, with great success.

Fiction

Live-action film continuity

Power Core Combination is an ancient technology, though lost in the early stages of the war on Cybertron. Transformers who had a potential for combination (known as "Proto-Combiners") were doomed to two unsavory options: either live with a permanent sense of incompleteness, or submit to the horrifying Gestalt Process. The Process was the Decepticons' substandard attempt at re-creating Power Core technology, and they succeeded in their physical aim but destroyed the minds of the participants. The monstrous Devastator was a prime example. The Autobots made more careful attempts, but they still inflicted mental damage. Proto-Combiners who abstained and tried to live as individuals may have spared their own sanity, but they were still pitied in larger Cybertronian society.

All of this changed, however, when the Matrix's database was recovered by the Autobots, and (with some human assistance) the Power Core process was at last rediscovered. It facilitated perfect symbiosis between a Commander and his Mini-Con, not only enhancing the attributes of both, but also creating a mysterious bond of shared perception. With training, a Commander might graduate to having a set of drones to control. This bond was as perfect as with the Mini-Cons, but rather than two minds working together, this allowed the single Commander to upload his own personality engrams into the drones and effectively be in multiple places at once. The Decepticons were able to steal the technology for their own warriors,<ref>Toy packaging blurb</ref> doling out the upgrades as a reward for displays of ruthlessness<ref>Bombshock's toy bio.</ref> or for loyalty.<ref>Sledge's toy bio</ref> Decepticons who have undergone the upgrade have a tendency to feel superior to other Transformers.

Because the technology was rediscovered only recently, Gestaltics researchers have yet to reach the limits of their understanding and exploitation of it. HASBRO INTERVIEW!

Power Core Combination was developed on Earth in the 21st century during a time when the Autobot/Decepticon conflict had largely moved away from the planet. Participants in the program—beginning with several Autobot Micromasters from planet Zone—were upgraded into new forms and fitted with newly developed Energon Matrix power sources, becoming part of a new "Master Class" subgroup. The Mighty Bolt Before long, their successful tests of the Power Core Combination drones drew the attention of a team of Decepticons under the command of Scrash, who performed a similar upgrade on themselves (dubbing themselves "Master Chaos") that would enable them to interface with the Power Core drones and steal them. Continuity

When quizzed about continuity, Hasbro said "the concept of Power Core Combiners can also translate to other continuities similar to Mini-Cons".<ref name=continuityqa>October Hasbro Transformers Q&A Answers for Cybertron.ca</ref> So far, Hasbro has only used the characters in Movie fiction, while TakaraTomy opted to introduce them into Japanese Generation 1 cartoon continuity in Transformers United EX.
