Decibel

Decibel is an Autobot Mini-Cassette combiner from the Headmasters portion of the Generation 1 continuity family.
What's read and blew all over?

The combined form of the W Cassettebots Noise and Graphy, Decibel (デシベル Deshiberu) possesses Graphy's speed and Noise's power. He is incredibly loyal and obedient to Twincast, but comes off as overly prim and proper to the other Cassette Transformers. His shoulder-mounted Fire Blasters can generate heat up to 9000 °C.

Decibel is also the older brother of Legout. What relationship this gives his components to Legout is unclear. Perhaps they're half-siblings. Ha!

The Functionist Universe

[edit]

A member of the Anti-Vocationist League, Decibel had risen to prominence in the organization, earning him a spot on the bridge of the Last Light. When the crew of the Last Light found themselves being chased by the Functionist Council's puppeteered Cybertron, they soon wound up in Megatron's native universe, with Decibel noting the portal home had closed behind them. Toys

Fight! Super Robot Lifeform Transformers

[edit]
  • Gurafi [sic] (W Cassettebot, 1987)
  • ID number: C-121
  • Noizu [sic] (W Cassettebot, 1987)
  • ID number: C-122
Decibel is the combined humanoid form of the separately-sold Graphy and Noise toys, released in the third year of Takara's Fight! Super Robot Lifeform Transformers toyline. Graphy forms the legs and waist, with his "Laser Guns" forming feet, while Noise forms the upper body with his "Fire Blasters" being over-shoulder cannons.
This combination is incredibly back-heavy, with the complete lack of arm articulation meaning there is very little option for counterbalancing the half-a-cassette sticking out of Decibel's back.

Vintage G1

[edit]
It's a Noizugrafi store. I was buying Noizugrafi.
  • Mini-Cassettes 3-Pack (Multi-pack, 2019)
  • Release date: September 16, 2019
  • Accessories: Left & right "Fire Blasters", left & right "Laser Guns"
In a surprise move, "Gurafi" and "Noizu" were reissued as part of the Vintage G1 series alongside an inexplicable, seemingly-identical version of Vintage G1 "Decepticon Frenzy". This version of the pair comes on a retro-styled two-pack card which is actually the left half of a giant three-pack card, shared with Frenzy on the right half all alone. Bizarrely, this right/left arrangement is retained for the back of the set, with Graphy and Noise's instructions and bios on the left behind Frenzy, and Frenzy's instructions/bio (and the other necessary branding) on the right behind the dinos. The packaging lacks any instructions for how to form Decibel, and the only mention of the combiner at all is in the bios of the individual robots.
This release of the pair has an issue where Graphy's neck joint is not tight enough to support the weight of Noise in torso mode, causing Decibel's upper body to just flop backwards.
Despite the ridiculously hyperliteral Romanization of his constituents' names, Decibel managed to keep his normal English spelling in the product descriptions.
This set was revealed when it went up for preorder on Hasbro Pulse on the first day of San Diego Comic-Con 2019... despite not being announced at the show at all. This set was also available at general retail in Hong Kong. It was originally intended to be a HasCon 2019 exclusive, but was shuffled to Pulse following the convention's indefinite hiatus.

Notes

[edit]
  • Decibel plays lefty guitar as part of a band that includes Slamdance and Legout on the retailer incentive cover to Spotlight: Blaster.
  • The instructions for the Headmasters releases of Graphy and Noise show Decibel's feet as having the black "toes" forward, with Graphy's weapons forming support heels. However, his character art on the back of the cassettes' box shows his legs swung around so the chrome weapons form the "toes". Neither one is particularly better at balancing Decibel's ridiculous backpack. (The Vintage G1 packaging lacks combined-mode instructions altogether.)
