On Cybertron, Rodimus and Megatron butt heads as the Functionist Council's plans pick up speed, while on Necroworld, love stories rarely have happy endings.

On Functionist Cybertron, the reappearance of Luna 2 does nothing to delay Megatron's formulation of a plan to rescue the local universe's Rung before the Functionist Council can use his supposed "drill" mode—which Ratchet suspects is the product of artificial tampering—to regain access to Vector Sigma. The situation takes a turn, however, when apertures begin opening on the moon's surface, and Nine-of-Twelve realizes that the Council never actually turned the satellite over to the Black Box Consortia as publicized. Instead, Six-of-Twelve has had the moon rebuilt as a recycling unit, in accordance with a long-thought-abandoned plan of his to have it harvest materials from other planets out in space and teleport them back to Cybertron to be used in the fortification and enlargement of the planet. The Council are now about to turn the moon's harvesting tractor beams on Adaptica and wipe the city and all the refugees they have allowed to gather there off the face of the planet. Nine-of-Twelve is distressed that this is happening despite his presence; the Council, it turns out, are combiners who together form the Key to Vector Sigma, and it is for this reason that Nine and his city have always been left alone, as the rest of the Council may need him alive one day... though apparently not any longer. Rodimus zeroes in on the revelation that the moon includes long-range teleportation tech, which he thinks they can use to get off the planet, but an irritated Megatron snaps at him that there are more important things happening than Rodimus's need for revenge against Getaway for stealing the Lost Light. Rodimus accuses Megatron of wanting to stay in the Functionist Universe to further delay the end of their quest and his judgement at the hands of the Knights of Cybertron, and the pair continue to argue viciously until Minimus Ambus steps in to redirect their attentions to the matter at hand. The group splits in two, with Megatron staying to help protect Adaptica, while Rodimus leads a team to rescue Rung.
On Necroworld, the badly injured Cyclonus joins Whirl in battling Killmaster. Upon learning that the massive Decepticon used his wand to displace Swerve and Ten to parts unknown, Cyclonus lops Killmaster's arm off and tosses it to Whirl, who then uses the wand to zap its owner and make him vanish too. Cyclonus prepares to take the wand to Brainstorm in hopes he can figure out how to recall Swerve and Ten, but before he leaves, Whirl insists that he reveal how he became so severely wounded. Cyclonus initially tries to claim that some of the Decepticons did it, but Whirl sees through the lie, and Cyclonus is forced to admit that Tailgate is responsible. The little 'bot has been suffering fits while sleeping that see him try to claw his own spark out, and Cyclonus has sustained his injuries while restraining him. Whirl urges Cyclonus to tell Tailgate before he ends up dead, but Cyclonus refuses, and warns Whirl not to say anything either.
Elsewhere on Necroworld, Anode tracks down Lug, who has retreated to rest by the memorial to the "Disappeared" once again following the new information she has learned about Anode's departure from the Lighthouse. Lug has always believed that Anode left her apprenticeship in order to be with her, but Anode now reveals the sad truth: her bravado and refusal to back down from a challenge resulted in the death of a protoform in her care when she attempted to sculpt its metal before she was ready, and the guilt forced her to abandon her position. Met only with understanding and forgiveness by her co-workers, she was unable to simply quit, and staged a theft as a pretense for her to abscond. Lug believes that is not the only reason, and that Anode needed to be hated for what she had done; Anode can only offer an "all-purpose sorry" for everything she has ever done to Lug, and asks for forgiveness... but it is evidently not forthcoming, as Lug has silently left by the time Anode looks up.
In Adaptica, Megatron tries to organize resistance even as Luna 2's tractor beams begin sucking up the city's helpless inhabitants. None of the populace are armed, and the Anti-Vocationist League has only a minimal arsenal, but Megatron makes the best of things, placing what weapons they have in the best possible locations, and ordering the evacuation of the city along multiple routes. Silence descends for a moment once the orders are given, and Megatron manages a smile when Minimus tells him that he doesn't think Megatron is trying to avoid his trial.
On the outskirts of Iacon, Drift takes out the Functionaries guarding the Council's matter transporter, which Rodimus's team then uses to teleport into Vector Sigma's chamber, deep inside the planet. Alas, they have arrived too late: the Council have already penetrated the wall of ununtrium surrounding Vector Sigma... but it appears they did not use Rung to do so, as he still sits off to the side in alternate mode. Ratchet sets to work locating and disabling the inhibitor chip locking Rung in his alt mode, but our heroes are interrupted by the appearance of Six-of-Twelve. Mocking and talking over the Councillor to keep him busy while Ratchet works, Rodimus tackles Six-of-Twelve through the hole in the ununtrium wall, and when the others follow, they are alarmed by what they see waiting for them there. Simultaneously, Ratchet deactivates Rung's inhibitor, allowing him to transform back to robot mode, his drill bit shattering like glass in the process, proving that his so-called alt mode was a fraudulent exercise by the Council. Rung immediately takes charge of the situation, ordering Ratchet to do exactly as he says...
Back on Necroworld, Tailgate awakens to find Whirl sitting on the end of his recharge slab. Whirl wants to tell Tailgate a story... a love story, but unfortunately, it's not a tale with a happy ending...

[edit]- Rodimus isn't wholly off-base in his accusations; Megatron previously confided to Ravage that he was attempting to delay his judgement in More than Meets the Eye #44. However, issue #55 established that Megatron has since moved past that desire.
- Anode notes that Lug "always comes back" to the Disappeared; she previously found her there after they were separated in issue #2. We wouldn't care to speculate but we reckon this is going to be significant...
- The protoform Anode attempted to sculpt is described as having been "stuck at the polyhedral stage", and is depicted as flat, octagonal piece of metal. When you're used to thinking of protoforms as full bodies, as they are normally depicted in other Transformers media, that might seem a bit odd, but it's in-keeping with what we previously learned about them in the Holiday Special story, in which they were established to begin life as very simple geometric shapes (Nautica incorrectly thought they were all conical).
- Whirl refers back to the last time Cyclonus was this badly injured, after his unfortunate run-in with the Lost Light security forces in More than Meets the Eye #47.
- Did you spot the previous clue that Tailgate was the one responsible for injuring Cyclonus? Back in issue #1, he was also offline when Cyclonus received the wounds that Tailgate mistakenly believed were inflicted by Fangry.
