Neon Genesis Evangelion

Neon Genesis Evangelion (新世紀エヴァンゲリオン Shinseiki Evangerion) is a 1995 anime television series created and directed by Hideaki Anno. Conceived as a character study and deconstruction of the mecha genre, Evangelion morphed into something else entirely when Anno's mental health struggles and the studio's budgetary woes saw the show slide into depressing nihilism and impressionistic surrealism respectively.
These problems, however, became Evangelion's biggest strengths, and the show became a runaway success off the back of it being unlike anything seen before. The resulting multi-billion yen franchise spawned a wave of imitators, a series of theatrically-released remakes, and enough merchandise to fully furnish one's daily life. And somewhere in the middle of that, Evangelion crossed over with Transformers!
