Grimlock leads an army to battle the Red Wizard, and makes a shocking discovery as he confronts an ancient evil from beyond Menonia.

Synopsis

Deep within the forbidding Rotlands, the evil Red Wizard weaves a sinister necromantic spell to raise another zombie warrior and add it to his ever-growing army of the dead. Every death leaves a corpse, and every resurrection brings him one step closer to conquering Menonia—someday, he gloats, even the Golden One will join the ranks of his army.

In the village of Angloria, Grimlock has spent weeks turning the disorganized villagers into a disciplined militia, a group capable of storming the Red Wizard's castle, destroying his lifeless wood-bots, and deposing the evil sorcerer. Grimlock announces that tomorrow, they ride... but despite his bravado, not all of the villagers are so convinced. Word travels fast in Menonia; one Anglorian points out that Grimlock has already abandoned both Arko and her father Arnak for not living up to his high expectations, and openly questions if they can trust their unusual savior in the battles ahead. Grimlock explains that his hatred of the Red Wizard burns too brightly; so long as his new allies refuse to surrender in the coming fight, he won't give up on them.

While Grimlock rallies his troops, Arko sets to work stripping a fallen wood-bot and carving constructing a new suit of armor for herself, cursing Grimlock for abandoning her people all the while. Donning her new set of wooden greaves and shoulderpads, Arko grimly muses that neither Grimlock, her father, or even the anti-sun she once worshipped embody the concept of true strength, and remembers a prior battle against the Golden One at sea, when her father Arnak willingly sailed their boat away and ignored Arko's pleas that they had to stay and help the ships under siege from the evil wizard's dragon form. As Arko confronts one of the Golden One's cycloptic minions and draws her sword, she muses that her only regret is not realizing this truth sooner.

The Golden One himself, meanwhile, has kept himself busy by launching another attack on Arko's home village of Valerift in the name of his deity Soltron... unaware of his servant Clatta watching the rampage from afar. When the Golden One returns, Clatta innocently asks about his master's latest hunt; the Golden One gloats that if Arnak and his followers continue to beg Grimlock for help, then they will burn to appease the face of Soltron.

By nightfall, Grimlock has finally led his ad-hoc army to the Red Wizard's crumbling castle, deep in the foreboding moors, but his human followers suspect treachery as they take point in the eerily quiet forest. Surely, one of them asks, a necromancer as powerful as the Red Wizard would have posted guards around his castle, or magical traps for the unwary? At that moment, however, Grimlock hears a familiar sound as a group of trees magically spring to life: they're really wood-bots in disguise! While the humans charge into battle against the wooden golems, Grimlock fords ahead by himself and runs into the Red Wizard's zombie army, a misshapen tide of ghouls who bury the Cybertronian in a tide of undead flesh. The monsters have numbers on their side, but they are still organic, and ultimately no match for Cybertronian might; whether they're trampled underfoot, sliced with sharp teeth and talons, or simply crushed by his mighty tail, Grimlock's dinosaur mode soon makes short work of the zombies. Having returned the restless dead to their slumber, Grimlock batters his way through the mouldering castle doors, and is promptly confronted by the Red Wizard himself! The evil lich throws everything he has at his attacker, but his spells have little effect. Grimlock realizes that the Red Wizard's voice is somehow familiar; when he tears off his robe, he discovers that his suspicions are true—the Red Wizard is really a Quintesson in disguise!

Although his Quintesson foe blusters that his powers over life and death make him the only true power on this world, Grimlock easily cleaves the alien apart with his tail; as he dies in a pool of his own energon, Grimlock recognizes the substance from his own world. Mortally wounded, the wizard explains that this "blood of Soltron" is the basis of all life in this strange world... as he dies, the Red Wizard spits that while he could've deposed the Golden One, Grimlock will not be enough. Having fled the destruction of their village, Arnak and a small group of Valerift villagers have followed Grimlock's army to the Rotlands and spy on the battle. Grimlock mulls over the Quintesson's words before he returns to the castle gates, hoisting the corpse of their fallen foe as a grisly victory trophy as his followers cheer. Grimlock recognizes Arnak amidst the crowd; although Arnak wants to know where his daughter is, Grimlock admits that he doesn't know. With the Golden One growing ever more erratic, Arnak tells the Dinobot that they need everyone on their side. This time, however, Grimlock pledges his support: if the Golden One derives his power from energon, then it's his problem. Grimlock agrees to join forces with the people of Valerift... and, far away, the Golden One welcomes an unexpected visitor to his citadel. Despite his warnings that Soltron won't forgive her transgressions, she just snarls that forgiveness is for the weak: Arko has come here to learn about Menonia's true power...

  • Confirming our suspicions, this issue reveals that the Red Wizard is, in fact, a Quintesson in disguise, mirroring the twist ending of the Generation 1 cartoon episode "Madman's Paradise". Although his Quintesson name is not given, the "Red Wizard" is shown wearing the same hood and face-cloth he donned in the original episode; in a bit of immediate foreshadowing, he compares Grimlock to a Sharkticon, go-to Quintesson minions in the animated film and the cartoon's third season.
  • When the wood-bots drop their disguise and transform, they make the standard "TSCHE TSCHE" onomatopoeia.
  • Grimlock namedrops Optimus Prime's original motto: "freedom is the right of all sentient beings".

  • Backmatter for this plus-sized issue includes another Dungeons & Dragons-style profile sheet for the Red Wizard, a Neutral Evil Quintesson. Continuing a running gag, he's got 1013 experience points, which could be a reference to the original October 13th airdate of "Madman's Paradise" or possibly the release date of this very comic. This also means that, much like Arko and Grimlock, the Red Wizard is a Level 3 character under 5th Edition D&D rules.
