Mara-Al-Utha is a Quintesson from the cartoon portion of the Generation 1 continuity family.
Red Mage's class change was more than he bargained for.

The sly and deceitful Mara-Al-Utha is a bombastic Quintesson sorcerer. Banished long ago by his fellows, Mara-Al-Utha has taken on the identity of the Red Wizard, using every form of trickery at his disposal to ensure that he reigns over Menonia. His sorcery allows him to take on other forms—one of his favorites is that of his former master's favorite student—as well as issue a variety of destructive spells such as lightning bolts. He is aided in his work by an army of robots constructed from wood and his faithful pet Groyle.

Eons ago, when the Quintessons still controlled Cybertron, Mara-Al-Utha dabbled in the forbidden arts of sorcery. The other Quintessons banished him to the magic-filled other-dimensional realm of Menonia, where he became the apprentice of the sorcerer known as the Golden One. Mara-Al-Utha would eventually betray the Golden One, sealing him in a cave and seizing power as the Red Wizard.

When Daniel and Grimlock accidentally travelled to Menonia, they were spotted by Groyle, who informed Mara-Al-Utha. Seeing that the pair had fallen foul of the Golden One's followers, Mara-Al-Utha aided them, presenting himself as a friendly face in this strange land, and taking them back to his castle where he spun a tale favorable to himself. Taken in, Grimlock agreed to help defend the castle, unaware that Daniel was at that point being placed in the dungeon with the Golden One's other pupil. An attack on the castle by the Golden One's followers began, and Mara-Al-Utha retired to a tower to assume his true form and use his magic to aid Grimlock and the other castle defenders.

Meanwhile, Daniel and the Golden One's pupil escaped the dungeon, and with the help of Ramhorn and some other newly arrived Autobots they freed the Golden One. The Golden One went to face the Red Wizard, but was weakened by his imprisonment and no match for Mara-Al-Utha's power, until Blaster provided him with amplification for his spells. Blasted by the Golden One's power, Mara-Al-Utha plunged from his tower and disappeared in a blaze of energy. The Golden One promised they would be ready if the Red Wizard ever returned. The Red Wizard's past was unknown, though rumours swirled that he was an exile among his own people from a distant land. After weeks of rallying the people of Angloria into an army, Grimlock led the charge on the Rotlands. While the organics held off the wood-bots and undead, Grimlock charged the castle, discovering the wizard's Quintesson nature. Dealing a fatal blow in seconds, Grimlock was intrigued by the strange energon the Quintesson was leaking. With his last ounce of strength, the Quintesson revealed that there existed a connection between the energon and the Golden One. After pondering that for a moment, Grimlock presented the Quintesson's corpse to the Anglorian warriors. Grimlock the Avenger
