Q-Transformers: Mystery of Convoy Returns is a mobile game and loving homage to Mystery of Convoy for the Famicom. By faithfully replicating much of what Mystery of Convoy is infamous for, from the high difficulty level to the strange, made-up enemies, it used the original game's fame/infamy as a marketing tool. It was available for free, with in-app purchases allowing for more continues after your inevitable game over, until it was shut down on March 28, 2016. The game has no story.
Mystery of Convoy Returns was made as a tie-in to the Q-Transformers toyline, and the first few waves of toys came with codes for unlocking additional playable characters in the game. It was also accompanied by the Q-Transformers cartoon in which the characters play and discuss the game and its origins.
Gameplay
[edit]The game is a sidescroller of the "endless runner" type, with the player character automatically moving across the level while the player shoots down enemies, jumps pits and transforms to avoid low ceilings. Unlike the original Mystery of Convoy, characters can now jump in vehicle mode, but not shoot. Like the original, you die in one hit, but at least each level now contains a checkpoint. Enemies can drop three different items: speed up, speed down, and invincibility. There are 8 levels total, each followed by a boss straight from Mystery of Convoy that is also fought in a running format, though you cannot transform during boss fights. Like in the original, the final level is a maze that continues forever if the player doesn't take the correct routes. Your clear time on levels is recorded, and for a time there was an online leaderboard.
An update on March 31, 2015, added a bonus "level 0" featuring a much gentler difficulty level, Ultra Magnus as a playable character, and Soundwave as a boss.
Like the original game's "RODIMUS" energon cubes, each level in Mystery of Convoy Returns features a collectible letter: finding them all spells out "ULMAGNUS" and unlocks an Ultra Magnus color scheme for Optimus Prime. This in turn refers to how the unlockable Rodimus in Mystery of Convoy was a palette swap of Ultra Magnus.
On beating the game, you get a message that thanks you for beating the sequel to a game said to be unbeatable and notes that to this day, no one knows what the titular mystery was.
