The Raptoricons began with a pair of Decepticon mercenaries, Thrashclaw and Slice, with matching velociraptor beast modes. Highly skilled, their exploits earned them a lot of attention on hidden forums. An Autobot named Shred began following them on the sly, and soon managed to find them, begging to join.

During one of Cybertron's big expeditionary pushes the Raptoricons went out on a mission for the Kolkular Powerbase, who gave them a mission of tracking an unknown energy signal to an unknown planet. What the trio found was a planet that had been refurbished into some sort of park for giant lizards, only to then be overrun and abandoned. In a disused lab, the trio found Gnash, who had been experimented on and then discarded with the rest of the park. At Shred's urging, Thrashclaw and Slice agreed to take Gnash in. Having long been fed up of the Powerbase's scheming and general creepiness, the new quartet decided to stay on Chicxulania, which had an abundant supply of energon for them to refuel on. Utilizing tech scavenged from the lab they found Gnash in, they were able to modify their ship's stasis pods to grant them organic beast modes based on the local predators.

For the next several megacycles, the Raptoricons etched out a living, not terribly concerned by the absence of comm chatter from home. Attempts to make friendly contact with the locals immediately went sour, for reasons the Cybertronians were unclear on, and so they resolved to simply try and avoid the Vespoids wherever possible, a decision strengthened by the race's apparent inability to feel pain.

Things changed when a stasis pod containing the Predacon Fractyl crash-landed on the planet. Though he was quickly abducted by the Vespoids, the Raptoricons staged a rescue. On return to their ship, Thrashclaw intended to plug the Decepticon for information, but before anyone could ask anything the Vespoids attacked, in greater numbers than they'd seen before. Midway through the fight, Gnash began to badly malfunction, allowing the Vespoids to abscond with her. Thrash and Slice made plans to go after their sister, but Fractyl declared his intent to stay and analyze the mysterious green energy sample he'd found on arrival. Though reluctant, they became more agreeable when Fractyl dropped the bombshell that Cybertron was utterly gone, destroyed by an entity called Thunder Mayhem. With that sobering knowledge, Shred decided to stay with Fractyl while the other two went to try and recover Gnash.

Finding the main Vespoid hive, and uncertain as to where Gnash even was or whether they would survive, the two resolved to charge in. They soon found themselves quickly outnumbered, only for salvation to arrive in the form of Shred, Fractyl, and a large supply of food, in the form of the green crystal, which Fractyl had determined was a form of energon the Vespoids needed to live, and that their ship had been sitting right on top of the whole time. However, they were more concerned by Fractyl's new beast mode, until he reminded them of Gnash, who as it transpired was perfectly fine. The geochemist had figured whatever experiments had been performed on Gnash meant she ran on the same "greenergon" as the Vespoids, and with a small supply she was better than ever.

The sudden peace between Cybertronian and Vespoid was then interrupted by the arrival of another Cybertronian craft, belonging to Impactor, who had been following the distress beacon from Fractyl's pod. He was able to give the group a more advanced universal translator, which allowed them to smooth things over with the Vespoid queen. Impactor offered the quartet passage off-world to help look for other Cybertronian survivors, but they declined. Life Finds a Way

Notes

[edit]
  • We shouldn't have to tell you that the Raptoricons homage many elements of Jurassic Park.
  • Each member of the Raptoricons takes cues from different scientific and pop-cultural reconstructions of [[wikipedia:{{#if:|:}}dromaeosaur|{{#if:||dromaeosaur}}]] dinosaurs. Gnash is based on the inaccurate but enduring lizard-like raptors of Jurassic Park, and the sparsely feathered Thrashclaw represents a "compromise between feathers and scales" endemic to many modern pop-culture depictions of raptors. Slice and Shred skew towards the paleontologically accurate side of the spectrum; Shred's fluffy Velociraptor adheres to modern knowledge of dinosaur anatomy while Slice was designed to show "how you can make feathered raptors intimidating and cool." <ref>Matt Frank's Tumblr </ref> And who doesn't think that transforming raptors are cool?
