Sky Reign

Sky Reign is an Autobot Combiner from the Generation 1 continuity family.
Polyhex Mew Mew.

There are two things you need to know about Sky Reign. The first is that he's formed around Sky Lynx, who brings his animalistic strength and outsized ego to the potluck. Both of these attributes are evident in different ways for the Combiner - at his best Sky Reign is quite the talker, gloating and prodding his opponents with the stupendous powers and abilities of his components, and even at his most inarticulate he just can't quite zip it. Catch his bad side, though, and you'll see that he's equally as capable a brutal beast and vicious fighter.

The second thing is that his components never actually asked to end up like this. Whether it's the power of a god given firsthand or stolen thrice-removed, an accidential trip to flux space or even the banality of democracy, the wishes of those he comprises aren't exactly the top of the agenda whenever Sky Reign enters the picture. Despite that, though, if the group that he consists of sticks together they're certainly more than capable of rising to the occasion.

It helps that his name is awesome.

The other four Autobots (or Decepticons) that form his limbs are never quite consistent. They have been known to include:

The Autobots that form this combiner aren't exactly a specific team in this microcontinuity. Despite this, their subgroup is (mostly) consistently given as "Sky Reign", so we've taken the liberty of documenting their lives outside of forming this ferocious warrior here as well.

Wheeljack was responsible for upgrading the young Orion Pax with increased strength and size, traits that would serve the future Optimus Prime well. At some point he also invented a near-impenetrable faceplate, which adorns his head to protect himself from explosive lab accidents. He subsequently joined the Autobots after graduating from Ultirex Technoversity. Wheeljack's bio

Both Wheeljack and Hound were on the Ark when it crash-landed on Earth,Wheeljack's bioAutobot Hound's bio and Optimus Prime subsequently commanded the latter to learn more about the planet they'd found themselves on - an experience that was captivating for the lead scout, leading him to consider Earth as his adopted homeworld. Autobot Hound's bio

Trailbreaker Trailcutter Trailbreaker, who had once changed his name to try and boost his confidence, was a point of particular concern for Rung. He noted that despite saving a great number of Autobots' lives thanks to the powerful forcefields he generated, being equipped with impressive magnawheels, and his upbeat personality, the irreplaceable Autobot suffered from serious self-worth issues even with the trust and support of his teammates. Rung went so far as to consider this his only weakness. Trailbreaker's bio

Smokescreen was considered a critical, if underappreciated, Autobot due to his essential role in rescuing teammates from battles that were already lost. Smokescreen's bio

Candidates for the combination that would come to be known as Sky Reign were chosen Wheeljack's bioSmokescreen's bio by other Autobots. Trailbreaker's bio Wheeljack had previously helped rebuild the Aerialbots, and this expertise was a factor in his inclusion. Wheeljack's bio

Sky Lynx had a reputation for bragging about his accomplishments as a warrior, but his mastery of combination was no exaggeration. Sky Reign proved to be a ferocious beast on the battlefield, Sky Lynx's bio serving the Autobot cause on Cybertron. Wheeljack's bioAutobot Hound's bioTrailbreaker's bioSmokescreen's bio

2005 IDW continuity

[edit]

Sky Reign was created during a disastrous Autobot raid on Galvatron's underwater base. In a display of power, Galvatron used his planet-sized Enigma of Combination to force an Autobot and Decepticon team of Sky Lynx, Sunstreaker, Thundercracker, Cosmos, and Slugslinger into combining and sicced the newly formed Sky Reign on Superion. It's Beginning To And Back Again With the aid of the Seeker clone combiners and Galvatronus, Sky Reign got the upper hand on Superion... but they were undone as Superion took control of the Earth-Enigma and disabled it, causing Sky Reign to separate. Unite Warriors

[edit]

The Disaster Relief Team, made up of Sky Lynx, Wheeljack, Hound, Trailbreaker, and Ratchet, were granted the ability to combine into Sky Reign when Vector Sigma reformatted their bodies so that they could rebuild and defend Cybertron. They formed the combiner to battle Grand Galvatron when he attacked Cybertron, with Sky Reign wielding Sky Lynx's beastly strength, Wheeljack's many and varied weapons, Hound's holograms, Trailbreaker's force fields, and the ability to regenerate from damage using Ratchet's medical unit. Sky Reign Chapter While he held his own against Grand Galvatron, Sky Reign was caught unawares and separated into his components when Megaempress blasted him with her fusion railgun. Moonheart then amputated their combiner joints, rendering them unable to recombine. Megatronia Chapter Vector Sigma later restored the joints so that Sky Reign could participate in the great combiner battle with Unicron. Assuming his quadrupedal Beast Mode, Sky Reign attempted to carry Optimus Maximus to Unicron, only to be blown out of the sky by the chaos-bringer's eye beams. Ruination Chapter, Part Two

The Hasbro release of Deluxe Groove markets him as an additional limb of Sky Reign, replacing Smokescreen.

Notes

[edit]
  • The infobox from the extended bio on the back of the comic book included with the Deluxe Class Trailbreaker figure in the United States, Australia, New Zealand, and Asia states his group affiliation as "Lynx King", presumably an early working name. By contrast, the infoboxes from the comics included with the Deluxe Smokescreen, Wheeljack, and Hound figures correctly state the affiliation as "Sky Reign".
  • Early sample packaging photography for the Legends Class Wreck-Gar figure pointed him out as part of this set, but, since there's no way to actually combine him with Sky Reign, the final product does not mention this.
  • When Sky Reign appeared in the IDW comics, only the torso from the actual Hasbro toy could be used: Wheeljack was on Cybertron, Hound and Smokescreen were on the Lost Light, and poor Trailbreaker was dead! Additionally, most characters in the IDW configuration don't have compatible toys. Sunstreaker is the only member of this crew with a compatible Deluxe-sized figure.
