Steamhammer is a Decepticon from the Energon portion of the Unicron Trilogy continuity family.
I wanna be your Steamhammer. Let there be no doubt about it.

Steamhammer has the physique to be a dull-witted legbreaker, and to be sure, he's very good in a fight. With his powerful fist and his mighty shovel arm, he is a deadly pugilist, and only the stronger Autobots like Landmine can really oppose him properly. Stoic and not given to mercy, he could run over a harmless petrorabbit without hesitation. When combined with his Construction Team into the mighty Constructicon Maximus, he is dangerous indeed.

Brute strength, however, does not win wars alone. Steamhammer is no Perceptor, but he is a skilled communications specialist and code breaker, and this is his preferred occupation: jamming transmissions, intercepting messages, and ensuring that his side's information is good, and the other side's is not. One must wonder, however, how he operates radio equipment and computer terminals with a shovel for a hand—

Shortly after awakening from their long slumber, Constructicon Maximus and Bruticus Maximus were ordered by Galvatron to pursue the fleeing Superion Maximus after the Autobot attempted to attack the Decepticon leader. Both combiners separated into their individual components and gave chase. They later pledged their allegiance to Galvatron, believing he was the future of Cybertron. Wishes

When Six Shot pinpointed an Autobot signal on the planet's surface, Galvatron sent Constructicon Maximus and Bruticus Maximus out to investigate. Steamhammer and the other components of Constructicon Maximus split from their combined form to beat down Autobot refugees who were attempting to look over the Miranda II's crash site for survivors. Their rampage was interrupted by the arrival of Arcee and Kicker. Though Bruticus Maximus gave chase to the duo, they got away. The Decepticons found their quarry again a little later, after the Omnicons had blocked off some energon pipelines to weaken the Decepticons' planetary defense grid. They recombined to gun down Kicker and the Omnicons, but were countered by the arrival of Optimus Prime and other Autobot reinforcements. Break Through

During a virtual training match between the Autobots and Decepticons, Steamhammer and Barricade gathered with their respective team members to face off against Storm Jet and his Air Team. Both sides combined and clashed, with Superion Maximus losing the battle. However, they were quickly defeated by Optimus Supreme in the next round. Distribution

After Optimus was blasted under a pile of debris, Galvatron called for Constructicon Maximus and Scorponok to help dig him out. Constructicon Maximus used his individual vehicle modes to clear rubble under which Optimus lay. Superion Maximus, the Prime Force, and Omega Supreme showed up to run interference before the Decepticons could put Optimus down, and Constructicon Maximus recombined to fight the new arrivals. When Rodimus, Prowl, and Landmine, now back in control of Cybertron's warp gates, teleported in front of Constructicon Maximus and Bruticus Maximus, the former split into his component pieces to do battle. Steamhammer wrestled with Landmine until the earth began to quake. Not knowing what the tremor signified, Constructicon Maximus decided to bail from the fight, and resumed his combined form before flying off. Galvatron Terror

Steamhammer and the other Constructicon Team members eventually paid for their treachery during a final showdown with the Air Team. Bruticus Maximus and Constructicon Maximus double-teamed Superion Maximus, who held his own and destroyed Constructicon's spark before the Autobot was reduced to just Storm Jet. However, the ghost of Superion's brother appeared, destroying Blackout, giving Storm Jet the chance to procure Constructicons's dead limbs and recombine into Superion, thus leaving the dead Steamhammer behind. Before Bruticus could recover, the Autobot pierced his spark, causing an explosion which engulfed them all. Spark

Steamhammer was never referred to by name, nor was he ever presented as a sentient, individual being. Most of his appearances were as the torso of Constructicon Maximus.

Takara's Super Link Scavenger transforms into a steam shovel of the super-sized quarry-mining variety. He also forms the torso of the team's combined Buildron mode. An energon star can be mounted to the spark crystal in his shovel, with him amusingly being the only member of the Construction Team to not be packaged with an energon chip.
Scavenger suffers from a slight misassembly: the small tabs on the sides of his treads are supposed to peg into the holes in the gray flaps on his hips, thereby stabilizing the robot torso. However, the tabs are located on the sides of his head instead. Fortunately, the treads can be easily swapped using a screwdriver.<ref name="ooebi">Ooebi's Hobby Factory gallery of Superlink Buildron</ref> Hasbro's official stock photos depict the treads correctly assembled, and the instructions show the tabs in the correct place in robot mode (oddly enough, the instructions imply that the tabs peg in less well than they do in reality).
All five members of Buildron were only available in Japan as part of a Toys"R"Us exclusive multi-pack.
This mold was also used to make Classics Scavenger.

  • Steamhammer (Combat Class, 2005)
Hasbro's version of Steamhammer was sold on an individual card, released in the sixth wave of Energon "Combat Class" (aka "Deluxe") toys. Unfortunately, he suffers from the same misassembly problem as Scavenger.
Steamhammer has a few minor deco differences from Scavenger, the most obvious being that Steamhammer lacks the silver paint on Scavenger's pelvis. Steamhammer also has lighter clear-blue plastic. Initially, Steamhammer lacked the gear-shaped "Powerlinx" symbol just like the Takara version did, but later shipments saw the symbol added as a running change.


Universe (2003)

  • Steamhammer (Deluxe Class, 2005)
A rebranded but otherwise unchanged Steamhammer was re-released as part of the latter half of the 2003-onwards Universe line, at a point when the line consisted mostly of rebranded re-releases of older toys sold through discount chains in the US. Steamhammer's assortment was available at Big Lots!, Tuesday Morning and KB Toys stores.
Sadly, this release of Steamhammer still has the assembly error. Dang it!
No mention of Steamhammer's combining ability is made on the packaging, presumably because the only other member of the Construction Team also available in this fashion was Wideload.

  • Steamhammer got his name indirectly from Generation 1 Steamhammer, by way of an abandoned OTFCC 2004 exclusive. At one point in time, the Rail Racer trains were offered to 3H Productions as a possible set of exclusives. Due to a suggestion from Graham Weaver, one of them was planned to be named after the original Steamhammer, as it was a train-y kind of name. (Another of the three trains would be Astrotrain and the third was never decided on, though "Loco" or "Cowcatcher" was favored, and the combined mode would have been named "Dominus Trannis.") Hasbro changed their minds on the molds' availability, but they later used the "Steamhammer" name themselves, as they did similarly with "Vector Prime".
