The Mechanic's criminal accomplishments had become much more than could be expected from a single human, which not only made him a priority arrest, but also raised suspicion of help. Specifically, help from the giant robots that had come to Portland not too long ago. When detectives Greco and Altman brought in two youngsters whom they had found in panic near Forbes's Garage and who insisted on a story about a haunted car, Stoler took it as further evidence that the robots were in league with the Mechanic. He ordered Greco to his office and informed him of the theory, adding that if the robots would turn up during tomorrow's operation to capture the Mechanic, they were a more important catch than he.

Later, Greco and Altman had to return to the station house without robots or the Mechanic, but they did have the Mechanic's accomplice and many other criminal masterminds, so Greco figured Stoler wouldn't complain about the operation's results. Mechanical Difficulties!
