Talk:Robert Epps
This page needs a picture, so the line "Bring it!" can be used as a caption.
I could have sworn I heard him addressed by a first name in the opening scene on the helicopter. But now I can't remember what I thought it was. --KilMichaelMcC 05:01, 7 July 2007 (UTC)
Is he really the only minority character who's not a ridiculous stereotype? What about the Arab kid's dad, who's level-headed, knows some English, and helps the Air Force guys? -Rotty 05:03, 7 July 2007 (UTC)
- Underage native guide is a stereotype dating back to T.E. Lawrence's travelogues. While it's true he didn't offer to sell them cigarettes in broken english- he hadn't had an opportunity to. Wasn't his only line of any consequence saying where his village was when asked? -Derik 05:10, 7 July 2007 (UTC)
- Have you seen the movie? Arab Dad is definitely not underage. That'd be weird and wrong. -Rotty 05:13, 7 July 2007 (UTC)
- I can't even remember the dad EXISTING, much less having any lines. His character-ness is... not overwhelming. --Steve-o 05:16, 7 July 2007 (UTC)
- The only thing I remember about the dad is Lennox repeatedly telling him he needed a telephone, like the dude had no idea what they were, and then the dad announcing "Cellphone!" and producing one. I liked that. Stupid American jackass. --ItsWalky 05:18, 7 July 2007 (UTC)
- I can't even remember the dad EXISTING, much less having any lines. His character-ness is... not overwhelming. --Steve-o 05:16, 7 July 2007 (UTC)
- ...I was refering to arab dad's SON rotty. -Derik 05:40, 7 July 2007 (UTC)
- Rotty never mentioned the kid. How does he play into this in any way? --Suki Brits 05:44, 7 July 2007 (UTC)
- Because I missed the word 'dad' in Rotty's original post, and thought we were discussing the kid?
- (Also I'd argue arab kid's dad simply didn't have enough screen time to be a stereotype, any more than a random black persona at the pentagon briefing who had no lines did.) -Derik 06:01, 7 July 2007 (UTC)

I think my problem with the line is that it implies that whitey is somehow exempt from looking foolish and stupid and stereotypical. Good gods, there's the history teacher, jock Trent, Tuturro playing "officious government prick" to the extreme, Sam's oblivious upper-middle-class parents, the dorks in Maggie's hacker team... and of course Sam, stuttering geek. (And the first dude to explicitly die on-screen? White guy.) Let's face it... everyone looks goofy in this, and it is FUNNY. --M Sipher 23:51, 8 July 2007 (UTC)
Just to go back to the kid's dad - according to IMDB, the kid's name is Mahfous, and I believe the dad is Akram, played by this actor. It matches the info here on Yahoo's cast list. What do you guys think? --FFN 19:19, 9 July 2007 (UTC)
- Yes, the dad was Manji/Akram from the credits. -Rotty 19:25, 9 July 2007 (UTC)
Main pic
[edit]New pic is alot clearer than the old pic, and is more 'generalised' than the scene-specific old pic. Part of the reason why I moved the smaller, blurrier pic down is because it fits in with the write up in the fiction section. --FFN 00:55, 8 July 2007 (UTC)
- Yes, but I want his top caption to remain "BRING IT!" because the actor link on the top screenful of this article takes you to the Tyrese Gibson article with caption "BLING IT!" -Rotty 01:03, 8 July 2007 (UTC)
- Even your own addition to his bio mentions his red beret (and its meaning), which is in the pic right there. I'm all for jokes, but not when they come at the expense of logic or information. --FFN 01:07, 8 July 2007 (UTC)
His rank
[edit]I was researching ranks and I noticed Epps has the stripes of a tech sergeant, and not a Master sergeant as he is usually quoted as being ranked as. What gives? --FFN 11:10, 3 August 2007 (UTC) Never mind, guys, I screwed up. --FFN 11:18, 3 August 2007 (UTC)
Promotion
[edit]According to this pic from cinematical.com, looks like Epps will be a Chief Master Sergeant in ROTF. Got the link from tfw2005.com

Ray?
[edit]Epps' wife calls him "Ray" in issue 3 of the IDW movie adaptation. Where did the name "Robert" come from again?--Nevermore 06:36, 25 June 2009 (EDT)
- I think it came from the Sector Seven ARG. --FFN 14:22, 7 July 2009 (EDT)
- Was Epps in the ARG? - Starfield 16:37, 14 July 2009 (EDT)
Three different names
[edit]Just to sort-of revive the point Nevermore rose above: I was just perusing the ROTF: Movie Universe book, and in it, Epps is given the first name Julius. We are now at three different first names for this guy, so I propose a move to just "Epps", with a note on the page about how different media has given him different first names. - Chris McFeely 16:09, 14 July 2009 (EDT)
- How about "Sergeant Epps"? - Starfield 16:12, 14 July 2009 (EDT)
- I'm easy. - Chris McFeely 16:13, 14 July 2009 (EDT)
Interesting fact yielded from googling - while Robert Epps has loads of hits, most of them used in descriptions of Tyrese's role in ROTF, the Top Trumps wiki (Top Trumps being a multi-franchise UK collectable card game, I don't know if you all have that in the US) notes that Epps was named Julius on the card released for the first movie back in '07. The cards also gave Donnelly's first name as Patrick! - Chris McFeely 16:44, 14 July 2009 (EDT)
- I'm for just "Epps". —Interrobang 16:56, 14 July 2009 (EDT)
- I seem to recall Figueroa referring to Epps as "Bobby" on the flight to SOCCENT in the first film. I'll check that later -- SFH 19:02, 14 July 2009 (EDT)
- Sheeeot, I'll check that right now. - Chris McFeely 19:07, 14 July 2009 (EDT)
- He certainly does! Cancel that move, gents! - Chris McFeely 19:09, 14 July 2009 (EDT)

PTSD?
[edit]I was watching an interview with the DOTM cast on Space, and Tyrese Gibson mentionned his character left NEST because he suffered from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Was any of that established in the movie proper? --Detour 09:51, 9 July 2011 (EDT)
- Not that I can recall. Rising Storm touched on it, though. - Chris McFeely 11:38, 9 July 2011 (EDT)
