Unicron Neo's true identity is revealed, and not even Optimus Prime can stand in his way.

Synopsis

Some ten years after 2021, Roller is informed that Dai Atlas has recovered the Zodiac, the one thing able to revive Optimus Prime, only for Prime's body to be spirited away by a mysterious capsule right in front of him...

In the battle for Planet Zone in 2038, Dai Atlas remembers who was responsible for the theft while also posing as Unicron... it was Dark Nova, who now emerges from Unicron Neo and tears the Unicron of Light apart. Dark Nova explains that he took the appearance of Unicron because it is the thing Transformers most fear, as his people have done before: Dark Nova's true identity is none other than a Vok, and his plan is to eliminate the Transformers now so that their descendants cannot travel back in time and ruin their plans on ancient Earth. For this sake, the Vok created Violengiguar to search for the Zodiac and prevent the resurrection of the Transformers' symbol of hope, Optimus Prime. One also became the first Dark Nova, and though that one was defeated, he was just one of two Vok and the second one will not repeat his mistakes.

Dark Nova transforms into planetary robot mode and unleashes Vok Novaroids on the Transformers, who fight back with reverse-engineered Novabots and the successive generations of Autobot leaders present. Smokescreen and Dreadwing remain loyal to Dark Nova as their goals still align, and use their combined mode to clash with Roadfire and Dai Atlas's Land Powered mode. Meanwhile, the two defeated new beast warriors coalesce into a Vok Galaman, an immensely powerful beast warrior who defeats Fortress Maximus, guns down Hot Rod, smashes Ginrai's transtector to bits, and manipulates the weather to strike Victory Saber down with a lightning bolt. Optimus Prime won't go down so easily, catching the Vok Galaman off guard by rapidly changing bodies with his Reconfiguration Matrix, but before he can finish the job he's impaled by Dark Nova who absorbs his Matrix energy and discards him.

Dark Nova proceeds to dig into Planet Zone for its Energon Z while Violengiguar presents him with the Zodiac, only to be interrupted by several Eldedroids, mass-produced Optimus Prime-lookalikes controlled by Daniel and Flip Sides. They warn Dark Nova that the very name "Optimus Prime" is a symbol of hope, and even if they fall today, someone like him will always rise and embody his ideals, ready to sacrifice their life in the battle against evil. Inspired by their speech and realizing he's a Prime too, the mortally injured Hot Rod is able to call upon the power of his Energon Matrix and reformat himself into a new Rodimus Prime body. Fortress is spurred on by his brother, Ginrai's transtector is repaired by a Synapse, Victory Saber refuses to fall while his heart still burns, and together the Autobot leaders all release the wisdom within their Matrices towards Optimus Prime.

Years prior, Roller joins the Battlestars to help find Optimus Prime's body, feeling responsible for it disappearing on his watch. He is killed on Lucifer while drawing enemy fire so the other Battlestars can complete the mission, and his remains are placed next to Prime's during the resurrection in hopes that he can be revived as well...

As he lays dying again, Optimus Prime remembers Roller's sacrifice and steels himself to keep fighting just as the Matrix energy reaches him, restoring his Reconfiguration Matrix and allowing him to combine once more with Roller into Star Convoy. Dai Atlas gives him a ride to Dark Nova and lends him his Energon Matrix-powered Zone Powered Cutter, which Star Convoy uses to bisect the Vok Galaman. Dark Nova is unconcerned given he has the Zodiac on his side, only for Optimus Prime to turn his trailer into a ramp and launch Dai Atlas like a drill rocket that pierces straight through Dark Nova. There's no time to celebrate, however, because the Decepticons arrive and urge them not to destroy Dark Nova as he has consumed Megatron! Indeed, just like last time Dark Nova combines with Megatron, changing shape to become the Star Giant!

  • So, after 28 years of having virtually no backstory, Dark Nova is finally revealed to have originally been... a Vok. Specifically, the two Vok who died in the Beast Wars episode "Other Victories". As mentioned above, this isn't actually the same Dark Nova from the original Return of Convoy fiction, but is instead a second Dark Nova, with the first having been the pink-eyed Vok from "Other Victories" and this new Dark Nova being the other, green-eyed, Vok. As to why this particular retcon was made into being the backstory of Dark Nova, well, uh... They're both tenticular floating head aliens? Sure, why not?
  • This comic solidifies the idea that Star Convoy's motorised "Micro Carrier", which forms part of his legs in robot mode, is an upgraded Roller.

  • Optimus Prime recalls having been saved from aliens along with his comrades aboard the Ark by Optimus Primal millions of years ago, in reference to the events of "Other Voices, Part 2". How Prime came to know of this act by Primal isn't stated, but since he refers to Primal specifically by the name of "Beast Convoy", it is possible that Prime learned of this from Primal at some point during the time the two spent together as comrades in the various pieces of Robotmasters fiction, as Optimus Primal was known as "Beast Convoy" in that series (to distinguish him from Optimus Prime since both Optimuses had been known as simply "Convoy" in Japan, hence Robotmasters also referring to Prime as "G1 Convoy").
  • After destroying his "Unicron Neo" disguise, Dark Nova assumes an unusual form before morphing into Star Giant, said form was never seen at all in the entire The Battlestars story pages, as it was taken instead from the second toy catalog. Complete with a panel on the last page where Dark Nova is illustrated being defeated as the Battlestar Attack drives through him.
  • The Vok Novaroids are virtual retools of the 2007 movie Protoform Optimus Prime toys.
  • The Vok Galaman is a repurposed Universe Razorclaw, who was a redeco of Beast Wars Tigerhawk, who himself in fiction was originally a Vok creation made from the fusion of Tigatron and Airazor. The two "new beast warriors" (one based on a furry land animal and the other being a winged creature) being fused into the Vok Galaman is undoubtedly a nod to Tigerhawk's origin.
  • Rodimus is upgraded into his Power of the Primes body by his Energon Matrix.
  • All the forms that Optimus Prime takes during the comic are based on specific toys:
    • He begins the story as the Masterpiece MP-10 Convoy toy, as has been his standard depiction in previous Legends stories set in the 2030s. He returns to this design after being impaled, and at the moment the Matrix energy rejuvenates him, he briefly adopts the golden color scheme of the figure's Golden Lagoon redeco.
    • As his battle with the Vok Galaman begins, he has transformed into the MP-44 Convoy toy, sporting the energon-axe and Sideswipe jet pack included with that figure. He returns again to this form by the end of the comic, with Roller showing off his ability from that release to tow the Combat Deck repair drone.
    • During the Galaman battle, Optimus proceeds to adopt his Go-Bot, Hero (aka "Missile Trailer Convoy") and Laser (aka "Battle Convoy") forms from Generation 2. Notably, the Go-Bot figure, which appears here in its unique Japanese deco, has not previously had a fictional role in this continuity.
    • Finally, Optimus's Star Convoy form is based on the original Star Convoy toy (not the modern version that had been revealed by TakaraTomy the month before this comic's release).
  • In a cute nod to the Illumina II mech from Victory, Jan is shown riding Grimmaster's Illumina III Drone.
  • Optimus Prime's transformation into Star Convoy is drawn to homage the battle mural box art from Return of Convoy.
