The Scavengers, accompanied by Nickel, are hired to recover the Magnificence, unaware that it is now in the clutches of Scorponok, who has a deadly connection to their most dangerous member, Grimlock.

Synopsis

[edit]

Several years ago, Shockwave departs Garrus-9 aboard a small craft with an hand-picked crew of other prisoners, including Scorponok, Flame, and Flywheels. Scorponok comments on the strange selections Shockwave has made for his crew, but the reason for his choices soon becomes apparent when the Decepticon Justice Division hail the ship, having arrived to execute Shockwave. Flywheels and Flame listen in as Shockwave offers the lives of the rest of the crew—all of them on the DJD's list below him—in exchange for his own, only to be taken aback when Tarn turns down this "logical" option and instead activates his lethal ability to shut down Transformers with his voice. The two eavesdroppers alert Scorponok and together, the trio make themselves scarce, jettisoning themselves out an airlock and leaving Shockwave and the rest of the crew to their fate... a premature move, it turns out, as Shockwave is able to save his own life by blasting the radio and cutting Tarn off. Back-up then arrives in the form of Shockwave's agents Bludgeon and Monstructor aboard their ship Torment, and the DJD opt to retreat.

After stepping through a portal on the planet Frayus, the Scavengers find themselves on the world of Troja Major, where their rescuer, The Curator, offers them a job: recover the Magnificence, recently stolen from his business rival Mengel by Flame. The Scavengers' unwilling companion Nickel—accidentally blasted through the portal a moment after them—wants to know what the Magnificence is, so the Curator explains what he has learned of the mysterious, all-knowing artifact's history. It was formerly owned by the Omega Guardians of Ki-Aleta, but the fact they did not take it with them when they "ascended" to the "Higher Realms" led the young Senator Shockwave to conclude that this was because it was not of their race, but was, in fact, Cybertronian. And not merely Cybertronian, but one of the Knights of Cybertron themselves, the oldest and wisest member of the order whose pursuit of knowledge, legend claims, became so all-consuming that he relinquished his body. The physical similarity of the Magnificence to one of the five heraldic symbols connected to the Knights has convinced the Curator of the possibility the legend may be true, and he wants the Magnificence for his museum. Deciding the risk is worth the sizable financial reward, the Scavengers accept, and Nickel—unable to contact Deathsaurus and the rest of her troops, and concerned with the rising levels of radioactivity and unstable weather conditions on Troja Major—agrees to accompany them in return for a cut of the profits.

The Curator teleports the Scavengers to their target location on the planet Confluence, where their concerns are immediately increased upon discovering that Flame's ship is a Worldsweeper, like the one they found Grimlock in on Clemency. Worse still, Confluence is supposed to be a desert planet, but instead, they find themselves in the middle of a lush forest... a forest that suddenly comes to life as the trees transform into robot modes and surround them, just like the wooden robot they also found on the Clemency Worldsweeper! Grimlock tears into the "Treecons" as the rest of the Scavengers watch in awe, given cause by Grimlock's display of might to recall his brief time as a member of the Decepticons early in the war. This leads Nickel to absently comment on how Grimlock's return to the Autobots led to a rare instance of a 'bot being bumped up the DJD's list... revealing for the first time to the Scavengers that she was a member of that much-feared organization. The Scavengers all immediately turn on her, but with his opponents dispatched, Grimlock calmly comes to her defense, defusing the tension by coherently speaking a record eight words in a row. Unfortunately, a moment later, Scorponok bursts out of the ground and attacks the group—and when Grimlock charges at him, Scorponok simply waves his claw, orders the Dinobot to "sleep," and Grimlock collapses.

The Scavengers are thrown in a cell aboard the Worldsweeper, which blasts off into space. After they fill Nickel in on their previous adventure on Clemency and the connections they have now made between it and Scorponok, Krok has Spinister open up the still-unconscious Grimlock's chest, to see if Scorponok has placed a control device in him. What they find instead is an empty spherical cavity, which Krok initially mistakes for a Matrix chamber; a moment later, Scorponok and Flame appear on the other side of the cell bars to correct him, explaining that the cavity was the previous resting place of the Magnificence. After its recovery from Ki-Aleta by the Autobots, the Magnificence was taken to Garrus-9 and stored beneath the Aequitas computer before being transferred to "the one place in the universe harder to break into": Grimlock's chest. After their escape from the prison, Scorponok and Flame made use of the Warren to teleport Grimlock out of his cell, and proceeded to torture him until he lost control of his mind and body and released the Magnificence from its tamper-proof chamber, after which they dumped him on Clemency. Krok points out that that doesn't explain how he made Grimlock fall unconscious, but Scorponok doesn't reveal the secret of that particular trick; instead, having confirmed that the Scavengers are not the agents of an unidentified enemy whose arrival he is anticipating, he waves his claw a second time, and Grimlock awakens. Looking down to see Spinister rooting around inside his open chest, Grimlock flies into a rage and rips the surgeon's arm off. Scorponok and Flame turn and walk away as the Scavengers' screams echo down the halls...

A little later, two of Scorponok's troops enter the brig to investigate a buzzing noise; one of the electro-bars on the Scavengers' cell is shorting out. Drawing nearer, they recoil in horror: Grimlock has dismembered the entire group, and standing amid the gore and seemingly in full control of his faculties once more, he demands to see Scorponok at once.

Quotes

[edit]

Nickel: "Sorry—what actually is the Magnificence?"
Spinister: "Finally! Thank you!"
Krok: "It's an all-knowing artifact. Ask it any question and you'll get an answer."
Nickel: "So it's a search engine."
Crankcase: "A sentient search engine!"
Fulcrum: "In the shape of a ball!"
Misfire: "A ball with an eye in it! An eye-ball!"
Nickel: "You realize you're making it sound progressively less impressive."

"Remind me why I'm here?"
"Greed. We offered you five percent if you helped us get the Magnificence."
"You said ten percent!"
"Exactly—ten percent, rounded down."

Nickel and Crankcase

"Scan for mechanical lifeforms."
"Right. How do I do that?
"You've got a scanner, haven't you?"
"Yeah, but there's not a button for everything! You can't just say 'scan for x' and ping. You can't say 'scan for racists with a burgeoning interest in physiotheraphy' and ten second later, ta-dah! There you go."

Krok and Fulcrum

"Spinister's a surgeon—an exceptional one. Don't be fooled by his behavior, his attention span, or his inability to differentiate between day and night."

Krok

Scorponok: "The Magnificence. It's what you came for, isn't it?"
Krok: "How do you know?"
Scorponok: "You know what they say: the trees have ears."
Flame: "Also, we've been standing just over there for the last hour."

Notes

[edit]

Continuity notes

[edit]
 • Shockwave's departure from Garrus-9 follows the events of Last Stand of the Wreckers #3, in which he was noted to be leaving with a "hand-picked crew."
 • Knowing that Flywheels was on The List (and knew it!) since before the Scavengers were ever brought together puts his panic at facing the DJD in issues #7 and #8 of More Than Meets The Eye in a new light, especially the part where he doesn't say anything when everybody else is professing innocence. Remember how he had a form of "psychosomatic hyperreflexia" that made him transform whenever he lied, giving him an extremely obvious tell?
 • Shockwave and Tarn call each other "Damus" and "Senator," respectively, alluding to their shared past as master and student in their past lives, as seen in More than Meets the Eye #11.
 • The Vos who is part of the DJD when they cross paths with Shockwave's group has hooks for hands, indicating that he is meant to be the undercover Dominus Ambus, who was first described to have this particular physical attribute in More than Meets the Eye #29. The notable absence of "The Pet" (the animal form Dominus would be reduced to when the DJD discovered his true identity) from the scene further validates the idea... but see "Errors."
 • Shockwave talks about his "far-extending" plans, which would eventually unfold as "Dark Cybertron." The implication that he was somehow aware that the DJD would show up and planned very specifically for them—that is to say, by picking a crew of entirely DJD-targeted 'bots, and as Kaon observes, arranging ahead of time for Bludgeon and Monstructor to arrive just when needed—is an allusion to the knowledge of the future that Shockwave acquired millennia earlier thanks to the time-transcending Ore-1 of LV-117, which was instrumental in enacting his "Dark Cybertron" plan. We urge you not to think too hard about how this works.
 • Nickel and the Scavengers travelled through the portal in issue #12. The 'bot responsible for opening the portal is revealed to be Agonizer, who previously appeared in issue #8, the two-part adventure that also re-introduced Scorponok and the Magnificence and kicked off the events leading into this story.
 • Nickel remarks that Grimlock "broke the face" of a friend of hers, which would indicate that the Dinobot is responsible for Tarn's facial scars. Indeed, back in issue #8 of More than Meets the Eye, Tarn claims to have "forgotten how much I hate you" during his brief clash with Grimlock, suggesting a prior run-in that ended poorly for him.
 • The story of the Autobots' recovery of the Magnificence from Ki-Aleta was originally told way back in Spotlight: Hot Rod, which originally introduced the mysterious orb. The creatures protecting it were identified as the "Omega Guardians" in that issue—monolithic stone golems whose depiction seemed very much at odds with the later claim, made in More than Meets the Eye #11, that Shockwave was on "speaking terms" with them back in his senator days. This issue clarifies the stone guardians were "throwbacks," left behind by the real Omega Guardians (the "unknown race" mentioned in Spotlight: Hot Rod as the creators of the stone guardians) to protect the Magnificence after they "ascended," and reveals more about Shockwave and the Guardians' connections.
 • Grimlock's vacillating between Autobot and Decepticon was alluded to repeatedly in More than Meets the Eye but never quite elaborated on. Evidently, after starting out as an Autobot, he defected to the Decepticons, and then defected back to the Autobots. Why this happened remains unknown.
 • Crankcase mentions Krok's dream of opening a mental health clinic, previously established in More than Meets the Eye #46.
 • Misfire recalls the Scavengers' brief trip to Earth, as chronicled in the More than Meets the Eye: Revolution one-shot. It was in that story that Grimlock retrieved his sword, which he's wielding in this issue.
 • Firmly bringing together all the nuggets of sub-plot we've been fed over the last five years, Scorponok is confirmed to be responsible for the crashed Worldsweeper containing the wooden robot and the damaged Grimlock that the Scavengers found all the way back in their first appearance in More than Meets the Eye #7.
 • Krok notes that Grimlock and Scorponok "have history." The footnote only directs readers to Monstrosity; Grimlock and Scorponok's feud also spans Spotlight: Grimlock and Maximum Dinobots.
 • The presence of a mysterious treasure hidden beneath Aequitas was previously alluded to by Overlord in More than Meets the Eye #6 (but that said, see "Errors"). This issue reveals that it was the Magnificence. It's unclear if Overlord ever discovered it had been moved from underneath Aequitas to Grimlock's chest; it's certainly possible that the mental torture he put Grimlock through (driving him to madness by forcing him to watch the pit fights he staged, as explained in Last Stand of the Wreckers #3) could have been an attempt to force him into relinquishing it.
 • Scorponok is readying for the arrival of an unknown enemy. His process: "Prepare, confront, repel," the three-word refrain we've previously seen Grimlock write in More than Meets the Eye #46, and which appeared in Drift's nightmarish vision from issue #1.
 • Shockwave's theory on the Magnificence's origins is very nearly spot on - he was only wrong about who exactly became it.

Transformers references

[edit]
 • Garrus-9 is identified as being in the Elba System, which is the first time prison's location has been identified by name in IDW continuity. The name Elba—which is not that of the system's star, but of the planet on which Garrus-9 rests—comes from Transformers Animated: The AllSpark Almanac II, which was making a reference to the GoBots cartoon episode "", in which the heroic Guardians were shown to maintain a prison colony of their own on the planet Elba (which was itself, of course, a reference to :}}Elba| that served as the exiled :}}Napoleon|'s prison from 1814 to 1815).
 • In addition to gaining more dexterous claws in his robot mode, Scorponok's refurbished scorpion alt-mode is closer to his live-action counterpart. Not only does he favour ambushing enemies from beneath them, but the tip of his tail now features a spikey, clawed harpoon in place of its old blaster.

Real-life references

[edit]
 • The planet "Confluence" takes as its name the real-life word meaning "the place where two rivers flow together," in reference to the confluence of major plots and myth arc story elements taking place this issue.
 • Agonizer's line of "It belongs in a museum." is clearly taken from :}}Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade|.

Errors

[edit]
 • Among the Garrus-9 escapees that are part of Shockwave's group are Bomb-Burst, Finback, and Skullgrin. The group are all drawn based on their Generation 1 toys; Bomb-Burst and Skullgrin, in particular, have clearly been drawn using their main TFWiki article pictures as reference (the center-panel on Skullgrin's chest is offset to his left as a result of the back-of-box artwork being misinterpreted, and Bomb-Burst's proportions and the specific shape of his head are straight from the Dreamwave artwork we use), indicating they were called for by name in the script. The characters have never looked this way in IDW continuity before, having all appeared in The Transformers: Stormbringer with original designs that hybridized their robot forms with their classic Pretender shells. Also, Stormbringer depicted them as all, uh, dying, such that IDW have been using Bomb-Burst and Skullgrin's Japanese counterparts Blood and Dauros ever since... but to be fair, the actual death scenes are vague enough that they could easily be retconned to have survived and been carted off to Garrus-9.
 • Scorponok mentions Shockwave "letting Bludgeon go on his way," implying that the skeletal samurai escaped Garrus-9 with them then departed. But Bludgeon wasn't in Garrus-9, having escaped capture after the events of Revelation and going on, in All Hail Megatron #15, to menace the Autobots with Monstructor during the Surge, the galaxywide offensive that also saw Overlord capture Garrus-9. It would actually make much more sense in the wider timeline of Shockwave's complex plan if he had been in Garrus-9, but Robots in Disguise #21 previously reaffirmed that he wasn't.
 • The Dominus-Vos is drawn as looking very much like the present-day Vos, just with hook-hands. He actually didn't look anything like him, as seen in his appearance in More than Meets the Eye #44, and was said to be enormous, contrasting with his fairly dinky successor.
 • While not exactly an error, Tarn's dialogue on page 3 uses the British spellings "paralysing" and "sceptical" despite the rest of the issue following IDW's American spelling policy. Both words were changed to the American spelling in the trade paperback.
 • Back in More than Meets the Eye #6, when Overlord alluded to the hidden treasure beneath Aequitas, he specifically said the computer "was built to hide" it. There's the whiff of retcon at work here, as that's impossible; Aequitas was constructed, used, and mothballed long before Hot Rod ever brought the Magnificence back from Ki-Aleta (which was about ten years ago in-universe).
