Tomb of Amtoltec

The Tomb of Amtoltec is a strange pyramid located in Dahshur. Containing anomalous hieroglyphs and strange artifacts, the ancient tomb has little to do with the Egyptian culture that lent it its characteristic architecture. Even its name is not of Egyptian etymology, leading some archeologists to suggest that the ancient structure owes something to visitors from some far-off territory.

If only they knew.

Following the crash of the Maximal starship Axalon in prehistoric Brasnya, the mysterious Talisman it carried was somehow transported to Dahshur over the following centuries, coming to be buried in the tomb. Strange Visitors

In 1984, having spent forty years searching for the device, Garrison Kreiger tracked the Talisman's location to the pyramid, hiring archeologist Elliot Marsh as a guide before disposing of him after chancing on the object of his desires. He immediately began experimenting with its vast power, creating many mummy-themed "IRON Troopers" in the process. His activities drew the attention of both Joe Colton's Adventure Team and the Decepticon Soundwave, and during the ensuing confrontation, Adventure Team member Mike Power made contact with the Talisman. The Secret of the Mummy's Tomb The mere touch was enough to mutate his prosthetic limbs—unknowingly derived from Talisman tech years before Power and Glory—and the increased power allowed the team to drive off Soundwave and take the Talisman into US custody. Notes

[edit]
  • The title of this story, along with the name "Amtoltec" and the whole conceit of the Adventure Team fighting mummies, is taken from the 1970 G.I. Joe playset, "The Secret of the Mummy's Tomb", and the comic book with which it came packed.
  • The hieroglyphics seen in the first panel of the story include renderings of Shockwave, a Decepticon insignia, the Micronauts Acroyear and Biotron, and the irregular hexagon chestplate design of the Visionaries.
  • The head of "Ironhide" can be seen in a panel of issue #3. It is unclear if, as alluded to by the Hasbro Heroes Sourcebook, this Maximal "Ironhide" was responsible for bringing the Talisman to its current resting place, or if he incidentally wound up in the Tomb by other means.
