In Inner Mongolia, the brainwashed legions of Crystal Ball join the Dreadnoks in attacking the Joes, who struggle to fight back now that their opponents are innocent civilians. Doc deduces that they need to get Crystal Ball away from his victims to break the control, which will require a vehicle, but the team's vehicular expert Cover Girl cannot make it through the throng of combatants to get out of the building and find one. Beefy Dreadnok Crusher seizes the still-intoxicated Quick Kick, but the martial artist easily overpowers him for a second time, hurling him across the room and smashing the front doors open, clearing the path Cover Girl requires to escape.

In Greece, the undercover Gung-Ho and Lady Jaye attend another gathering of Cobra anarchists—one that they find has turned from an ordinary protest into something like a cult meeting. Furthermore, it soon becomes apparent that the rabble-rousers running the show aren't just snakes... they're Dire Wraiths! Aware of the Joes in their midst, the Wraiths direct their faithful followers to attack Jaye and Gung-Ho, but they prove more than capable of defending themselves. Jaye radios Lemuria for extraction, while Gung-Ho just enjoys the fight, and the chance to finally take off his shirt.

Back in Mongolia, as the Joes continue their fight, Rock 'n Roll manages to capture Crystal Ball so the team can pull out with him. Once he is in Rock's clutches, however, the ex-Cobra soothsayer places his fingers upon Rock's head and psychically enters his mind, urging him to release his lust for destruction. Rock seems able to resist the psychic attack, but Crystal Ball merely smiles as he is slung over the Joe's shoulder. With their target now in their custody, the Joes make their move to escape; Ripper tries to stop them with his ostentatious knife-shooting gun, but Quick Kick easily snatches one of the blades out of the air and hurls it back into the weapon, causing it to backfire. The team make it outside... but unfortunately, Cover Girl is not waiting for them as expected!

Aboard Lemuria, Grand Slam and Doc put the finishing touches to the equipment intended to restore the impatient Skywarp's teleportation power. When Skywarp is directed to perform a test teleport, however, his system malfunctions, and feedback causes the machines to explode. Shrapnel hurtles toward Grand Slam... but Doc hurls himself in front of his team-mate to protect him, revealing that he is actually a Dire Wraith too! Fatally wounded by the shrapnel, the Doc-Wraith dies, urging Grand Slam not to tell his daughter about his true nature. Skywarp quickly contacts Scarlett to summon her to the lab, interrupting her as she is giving new team member Salvo a tour of the facility.

While Crystal Ball continues taunting Rock 'n Roll, Roadblock and Quick Kick hold the doors of the Dreadnoks' mansion shut to keep their attackers from following while the group holds out for Cover Girl to arrive. She soon turns up, though the Joes are disappointed to find she has only managed to scrounge up a rusted old jeep, instead of the "awesome" stuff she normally finds. As everyone clambers aboard and Cover Girl peels out, however, they quickly learn they are not out of the woods yet when the entire roster of Dreadnoks comes roaring after them on their motorbikes!

*Grand Slam's Dire Wraith detector has given apparent "false positives" while scanning Doc Senior in the previous two issues; here, we find out that it wasn't false, and that Doc actually is a Dire Wraith. Or rather, was—and with his final words, he implies that he's been a Dire Wraith for a long time, and that the current Doc is his genuine biological daughter and unaware of her Wraith heritage.

While Roadblock's unit continues their battle with the Dreadnoks, the threat of the Dire Wraiths resurfaces on multiple fronts.

Synopsis

[edit]

Grievously wounded by the shrapnel, the Doc-Wraith falls unconscious, even as he urges Grand Slam not to tell his daughter about his true nature. • In this issue's letters page, Sitterson clarifies the continuity issue surrounding Grand Slam, noting that the current character is the same Grand Slam who appeared in G.I. Joe: Origins, and that he actually survived his apparent death in that issue thanks to the Joes' advanced medical facilities.
