*Saur's name is often romanized as "Zaur", due to how his name (ザウル ''Zauru'') is spelled in comparison to the current standard of transliterating "saur" as サウル ''sauru''. However, ''zauru'' was a previously standard transliteration, so "Saur" was most likely Takara's intent. This is also supported by the name of Saur's teammate, [[Dile]], likely being a shortening of "crocodile".

Fight! Super Robot Lifeform Transformers Zaur is a mini-cassette that transforms into what appears to be a dark blue (nearly black) Apatosaurus. He has a good range of articulation with several points of movement at the neck and tail, as well as hip joints. Two silver "Cannon Guns" plug into the faux cassette tape holes near his hind legs. In tape mode, he fits into the chest compartment of the original Blaster or Soundwave toys (and their retooled reincarnations).
Zaur combines with Dile to form the legs of Legout. His cannons become hip-mounted weapons in this form.
As one of the vanishingly few toys unique to the Headmasters toyline and something of a tail-ender within the line, Zaur and the other three "dino-cassettes" command ridiculous sums on the secondary market. Their actual rarity is questionable, though; similar "exclusive holy grails" Stepper, Artfire, Twincast, and Soundblaster were uncommon, but not vanishingly rare, yet still commanded top dollar due to overseas perception (until they got reissued, at any rate). After some decades of this, their high price status may at last change after their rerelease in the Studio Series line—except, perhaps, for MISB collectors.
Zaur was recreated and reissued as Studio Series Uruaz and Zauru.

Studio Series

[edit]
Main article: Zauru#Toys
Predating the 2019 Mini-Cassette reissues in the Vintage G1 toyline, Hasbro recreated the W Cassettebot molds that form Legout and sold them separately in the Studio Series toyline inside two multipacks advertising the Bumblebee film. While these were marketed as a part of the live-action film series, they are quite clearly intended to be reissues of the original toys and were presumably packed into these sets as the future of the Vintage G1 line at the time was uncertain.

Notes

[edit]
  • Zauru (ザウル) was a previously standard transliteration for "-saur", obscuring the intention of Zaur's name. "Dile" being a modification of "reptile" implies "Zaur" is the better match rather than "Saur".
  • Zaur's ability to become stronger in water is a reference to the erroneous idea that sauropod dinosaurs were semi-aquatic.
