The Battlestars have triumphed against Dark Nova, and Supreme Commander Optimus Prime has left the battlefield to the new and upcoming Autobot warriors. However, they haven't had an easy time finding their footing, having to contend with Scrash's forces. In the meantime, both sides have fallen to an energy crisis.
After a brutal attack from Metrotitan, Metroplex lies fallen and Marinemaster can only wonder if a traitor in their ranks could have led to this. He is knocked out and wakes up on Minerva and Glit's operating table with a new body. He rejects the Marinemaster name, as he no longer has an Energon Matrix. Minerva explains that Metroplex's transformation cog was thankfully left unharmed and that the Nebulans are assisting the Autobots in rebuilding Metroplex as fast as they can, but their efforts are hampered by the constant energy shortage.
Omega Supreme, forced to use Guardian robot parts to repair himself, apologizes to Metroplex in person and asks whether it was hard to fight his former comrade, Metrotitan. Metroplex answers that, while it is hard to fight a former ally, his friends' safety must come first.
Elsewhere, Darkmount, the base mode of Metrotitan, is en route to Earth. Inside, Straxus tries to take over Ultra Megatron's mind with his mental link, but the Decepticon Emperor resists the usurper. Flare Jet informs Straxus that they have "overwritten" Scramble City's defense system. The elated Straxus sends his Decepticon forces to attack the apparently defenseless Autobots at the city. The Autobots are caught by surprise, and forces like the Autobot Cyberjets set out to defend the city. After Metrobase falls to Metrotitan, Pipes pleads with Twincast to activate Metroplex, but Twincast is wary of the drain on their energy this would lead to. Nevertheless, Metroplex is transformed!
Metrotitan is shocked by Metroplex's new and even more immense size. Superion asks the traitor if he's willing to turn over a new leaf, but Omega Supreme contends that the program installed in him by the Nine Great Demon Generals cannot be erased, only destroyed. Metrotitan dispels this rumor, stating that it is of his free will that he fights the Autobots, not of any manipulation by Scrash or the Generals. Metroplex acknowledges his admission and banishes him from the Autobots, attacking the traitor with an antimatter projector. The Decepticons are forced into retreat, and Metroplex cannot follow, as he has run out of energy.
While the Autobots clean up and recover, Twincast receives a message from Optimus Prime! After Scamper links up Twincast to Teletraan II, Optimus Prime reveals to the Autobots that he has found the solution to their energy problems: Nucleon!
Optimus Prime is absent because he has embarked on a quest for a new energy source, a plot point plucked from the bio that came with the "Nucleon Quest Super Convoy" toy, which is the form he's wearing when he appears at the end of the story. This bio was also the first use of Nebulans in Japanese continuity, describing how Prime had allied himself with Hi-Q to go on his quest; hence, although no further background behind their alliance is divulged, this story also features Nebulans and Autobots working together.
Marinemaster previously appeared during the United EX storyline, developed as a character with the intent that he be an early incarnation of the Generation 2 character, Manta Ray. Here, we see how he transitions from his Power Core Combiner "Master Class" body into his Generation 2 form, with accompanying loss of his Energon Matrix.
Glit originated in the Kiss Players series, where he was a Decepticon who was coerced into joining a singing group with some humans and Autobots. It seems the experience agreed with him, as here, he appears to have completely defected to the Autobots and is putting his medical knowledge to work for them.
Straxus also appeared during the United EX storyline, where he was known as "Rollermaster". He too has shed his Power Core Combiner "Master Chaos" form; see "Real-life references" below for more on that.
Megatron is in his "Ultra Megatron" form, which he was given by Dark Nova during the Battlestars storyline. He is comatose following his and Dark Nova's defeat at the climax of that story.
Straxus notes that if Megatron continues to resist his attempts to forge a mental link with him, then his "diabolical nature" will "fade away"—an explanation for the personality change that Megatron underwent prior to the Japanese Generation 2 storyline that saw him make peace with the Autobots and forge the Cybertron Alliance.
Metrobase was the headquarters of the Micromasters in the The Transformers: Micromaster storyline, which was set in the early 1980s. While clearly a redeco of the Metroplex mold, its origins were left unsaid, and while they're not expanded on here, see "Transformers references", below.
Twincast is still in charge of Autobot City, just as he was when he was Blaster back in the original Generation 1 cartoon. He and Pipes discussing the need for Metroplex to transform hearkens back to similar interactions between the characters in Five Faces of Darkness.
And outside of Japanese continuity, there's also Manta Ray, who in the Marvel Generation 2 comic was created as a Decepticon but switched sides.
Omega Supreme—having been badly damaged after the attack that occurs before the start of this story—is missing his claw-arm and has been repaired with Guardian robot parts. Thanks to the toy-accuracy of Ohshima's art, it's possible for anyone who owns a Generation 1 Omega Supreme and "GADEP" toy to recreate his appearance here by mixing and matching parts.
Also, Omega's head is drawn with his Encore reissue in mind, artistically incorporating the slightly odd retool the toy was given to add visible eyes inside its previously-featureless face visor.
The idea of Straxus attempting to forge a mental link with Megatron is a callback to the time the characters did the same thing in the Marvel UK Generation 1 comic.
Just as Metroplex's city mode has a different name in Japanese (the famous "Scramble City"), Straxus has given Metrotitan's city form a name too: Darkmount, after the fortress he commanded in the original Marvel comic series. An extra layer of meaning is added to this when one recalls that United EX writer Andrew Hall envisioned this incarnation of Straxus as actually being the same character as the Marvel Straxus, having hopped dimensions.
It goes without saying, but Metroplex is rebuilt from his original Generation 1 form into his new 2013 Generations "Thrilling 30" design, with an appropriate in-story increase in size in reference to the toy's stature as the tallest Transformers toy ever.
Metroplex says he will banish Metrotitan from "our clan"; he could just be referring to the Autobots, but the presence of three separate characters based on the Metroplex mold in this one story certainly seems intended to evoke the Titans from the 2005 IDW continuity, especially since Metrobase has been recolored with a new lavender deco seemingly based on one of the Titans that appeared in the 2012 More than Meets the Eye annual. This notion was expanded years later in someissues of the Legends manga.
X-Gunner steals Delta Seeker's arm by the end of the story, finally accomplishing a long-standing desire of his that was mentioned in his original bio.
Straxus sports a new body resembling the New Microman Armored Suit figure Bulsonic (Blue Type), apparently in reference to a Japanese fandom theory that the character's original design was inspired by said toy.<ref>Andrew Hall on The Allspark Forums</ref>
The screen displaying Optimus Prime presents his name in four languages: Optimus Prime (English), コンボイ (Japanese), 柯博文 (Taiwanese Mandarin), and 옵티머스 프라임 (Korean).
