Atari Hitotonari is a human from the Kiss Players portion of the Generation 1 continuity family.

Atari Hitotonari (人隣 当梨 Hitotonari Atari) is submissive, passive, immature even for her young age, and quite weak both in terms of physical strength and constitution, being prone to fits of motion sickness. As you can see, she's not off to a good start as far as defining characteristics go...so what's she good for? Well, she is fairly bright (she's second in her class), and she hates to see others suffer, an emotion mostly borne from the fact that she is so terrified of being hurt herself that she doesn't want to see anyone else feel pain either. In fact, she so deplores hurting other beings that she is a strict vegetarian, though she does like to gorge herself on doughnuts and other sweet desserts.

Atari's most important feature is that she is a hugely powerful Kiss Player. It was this ability that led her to join the Earth Defense Command and take part in its effort to eliminate the threat that Transformers pose to all on Earth. Well, actually, she didn't really "join" it as much as she was "sucked into" it...and then spat out...naked...and covered in goo...

When the Decepticon leader Galvatron crash-landed on Earth in the year 2005, his impact utterly obliterated the city of Tokyo and shattered Transformer-human relations. The Earth Defense Command reverse-engineered Galvatron's corpse to create man-made Transformers named "Autoroopers", and forced all Transformers off of Earth, keeping them from returning to the planet by surrounding it with an anti-electron field.

In 2006, Atari's parents died in a Transformer-related accident, suddenly leaving the young girl alone, despondent, and resentful toward the giant robots. While alone one day, her mind consumed with the tragedy that had recently destroyed her life, she tumbled from the narrow wall on which she was walking. This proved to be as much as she could take, and she cried aloud that she wished to die, so she could be with her parents in the next world. But Atari did not expect that someone would answer her, when a voice emanated from a nearby car that inquired if that was what she truly wished. As the terrified Atari watched, the car transformed into a robot form: It was, in actuality, a Legion, one of many monstrous creatures created when Galvatron's cells were dispersed into the atmosphere upon his impact and bonded with other animals and machines.

Autorooper! Stop playing Atari and do your homework!

Faced with the very real possibility of death, Atari realized that she truly wished to live, and in answer to her prayers, an E.D.C. Autorooper appeared, barrelling into the Legion and smashing it aside. Before it could finish the creature off, however, the Autorooper dropped to its knees and disgorged E.D.C. member Shaoshao Li, one of the organizations' "Kiss Player" operatives (humans who had been infused with Galvatron's cells and given the power to bond with other organisms containing them), right on top of her. As the Legion righted itself to continue its attack, the Autorooper instructed Atari to kiss it or she would die, but Atari hesitated, and the Legion tore the Autorooper's arm off. Realizing that inaction would only cause others pain in addition to herself, Atari kissed the Autorooper and discovered that she too was a Kiss Player as she merged with the robot, repairing its injuries and allowing it to decapitate their mutual enemy messily. Shocked by what she had done, Atari vomited and passed out.

Having observed the battle, E.D.C. commander Hitoshizuku Amaō took custody of the girl and brought her to E.D.C. headquarters. She awoke in an unfamiliar room, where she was greeted Ringo Chikuma of the Ne Squad, who proceeded to unveil her sociopathic tendencies by biting Atari in order to "taste" her abilities. Atari subsequently formally joined the E.D.C. and was partnered with Shaoshao's Autorooper Ne-04, which left her cursed to live in the absent Shaoshao's impressive shadow. She bemoaned the fact that she had wound up partnered with a robot with a car mode when she was prone to car sickness, but she resolved to do her best to protect the Earth from Transformers. Kiss Players radio drama #3 She was disappointed that a robot had been the recipient of her first kiss and was thoroughly embarrassed by the whole kiss-fusion process, Kiss Players radio drama #6 but she had great respect for her Ne Squad teammates Kiss Players radio drama #15 and fought Legions alongside them. Atari had a particularly unlucky experience when she ate an omelette that contained a minuscule Legion creature. The tiny monster immediately began causing havoc in her stomach, so Atari kissed her Autorooper, inexplicably causing it to shrink so that it could enter her body and fend the Legion off. Atari was not exactly in favor of the plan, but in typical fashion, acquiesced after only the weakest of protestations. As the battle played out in her guts, she grew even more embarrassed when the Autorooper discovered the remains of various desserts she had snuck out to eat the night before. The Autorooper eventually destroyed the Legion by hurling it into her digestive fluid, and then talked Atari into sticking her finger down her throat and vomiting him up. She wasn't happy. Atari's Close Call?! Atari asked Commander Amaō about the surprising shrinkage of her Autorooper, and the commander told her that some Transformers simply possessed that power. Atari was later horrified when the shrunken Autorooper crawled inside her shirt while she was daydreaming about desserts. Kiss Players radio drama #21

While visiting the bathroom one day, Atari suddenly found herself possessed by the ghost of the Decepticon Air Commander Starscream, who had learned of the power of Kiss Players from the data banks of Teletraan 15. Starscream burst from the bathroom in control of Atari's body and immediately began threatening the other Kiss Players, but found that none of them were taking him seriously...because he'd forgotten to pull up Atari's underwear. 15 Go! Go!: Starscream's Chapter Starscream kept his hold on Atari, and through her, tracked down his old ally Doctor Arkeville, who converted a jet fighter into a new body for him. Atari kissed the jet and transferred Starscream's ghost into it, but it was almost immediately destroyed by the E.D.C.'s forces. Kiss Players radio drama #27

When the E.D.C. were put in charge of transporting the dead body of Autobot leader Optimus Prime into Tokyo, Atari was among the troops providing an escort. Soon, a commando unit led by Marissa Faireborn attempted to reclaim Prime's body, and Atari was rendered helpless when Marissa sliced her clothes off with a knife, fused with the resurrected Prime and ran away. Life within the E.D.C. progressively proved harder and harder for Atari, as Ringo continued to subject her to repeated acts of whim-driven cruelty, Kiss Players radio drama #30 and the mysterious disappearance of Shaoshao weighed heavily on her mind. Kiss Players radio drama #18 In civilian life, she found a friend in Marissa Faireborn, but this only lasted until the two girls each discovered who the other truly was and sadly accepted that their positions made them enemies. Kiss Players radio drama #13 Nevertheless, Marissa and Optimus Prime proceeded to save Atari from Legion threats several times, but this only made Atari worry that Marissa must be a better kisser that her, if her robot partner was stronger. Depressed over the fact that she had yet to achieve a second successful fusion with her Autorooper since that first fateful day, Atari was moping around E.D.C. headquarters when her Autorooper surprised her by silently raising its palm and offering her a flower. Angry and miserable, Atari smacked the flower from the robot's hand and ran away. Atari's fellow E.D.C. Kiss Player, Kayu Michikusa, observed the clash and followed Atari out of the base, catching up to her on a hill overlooking the city and presenting her with a flower chain made using the bloom the Autorooper had picked. Having experienced an all-too-rare act of genuine friendship, Atari's spirits began to rise. Sadly, it didn't last long, as she returned to base still wearing the flower chain and immediately caught Ringo's sadistic eye. The deranged girl began eating the flowers and tried to share them with Atari by kissing them into her mouth. Atari was literally saved by the bell as an alarm went off, signalling a Legion attack, and Ringo scampered away to respond.

Her status quo of perpetual misery restored, Atari composed herself and followed, discovering the source of the crisis: Optimus Prime and Marissa were leading an army of Legions down on E.D.C. headquarters! Before the Ne Squad could attack, a further surprise occurred: the Autobot Hot Rod arrived on the scene, now Kiss Player partners with the missing Shaoshao! The E.D.C.'s Kiss Players fused with their Autoroopers, save for Atari, and plunged into the middle of the battle, but were sent flying by a swing of Prime's sword. Fearing for the safety of her friends, Atari made an impassioned plea to her Autorooper to help her save them, and at last, the robot responded to her and transformed to robot mode, kneeling so it could be kissed. Atari did so, and finally, the pair fused together once again and sprang into action, turning back the Autobots and Legions. Kiss Players #3

Her friendship with Kayu growing, Atari made plans to go on a trip with the girl. But as one relationship improved, another deteriorated, as Ringo's torture sessions grew worse and worse. Atari's pleas to Kayu for help fell on deaf ears, and so Atari spitefully broke off the trip. The next day, however, Atari discovered that Kayu had been transferred to another squad, Kiss Players radio drama #33 and she soon learned from her other teammates that Kayu had previously been subject to Ringo's "attentions" before Atari came along. This discussion was cut short by a sudden emergency: Kayu's Autorooper was running amok. Atari believed that she could hear Kayu's voice coming from within the robot, but Ringo sprang into action and mercilessly gunned it down despite Atari's pleas. Overcome with emotion, Atari blacked out...and when she awoke, she could hear Ringo screaming...and her Autorooper's hands were stained with blood. In losing control of herself and her Autorooper, it appeared, Atari had taken revenge for herself and her friend. Kiss Players radio drama #36

When Optimus Prime staged another attack on E.D.C. headquarters, once again backed by a phalanx of Legions, Atari fused with her Autorooper to join the fight. When her fusion time expired, she discovered Marissa and Shaoshao in the middle of the battlefield, having just finally set aside the differences that had caused them to fight up until now. Together, the three girls vowed to uncover the mysteries lying at the heart of the E.D.C. Kiss Players radio drama #37 Venturing into the Genital System facility beneath the E.D.C. building, the girls and their robot partners discovered the remains of Galvatron, before a door came slamming down, separating Atari from the rest of the group. Commander Amaō appeared before her and explained the full extent of her plans: her daughter, Atari learned, had died in Galvatron's impact, but Amaō had discovered that her soul had somehow been preserved in the Legions. Experimenting with Legion remains and Kiss Players who had outlived their usefulness, Amaō believed she could recreate her daughter in a Kiss Player body, and had originally selected Shaoshao for the process. Her plans changed when she discovered Atari, whose yet-to-be-realized Kiss Player powers made her an even better candidate for the process, and she had approached Atari's parents in hopes of recruiting the girl into the E.D.C. Atari's parents had refused, and so Amaō had orchestrated their deaths to lead Atari into her clutches. Amaō began her plan, but Atari fought against the fusion process, remembering her friendless childhood and how far she had come. Fusing with her Autorooper, she seized Galvatron's body and blasted off into the air, causing the complex to collapse and kill Amaō. All of Galvatron's cells from the girls, their partners, the Legions and the Autoroopers were absorbed back into Galvatron's body, and Atari flung the reconstituted Decepticon leader into space. Before her own powers faded, she looked down upon the Earth, and smiled in happiness. You, I, and the Spinning Earth

The Kiss Players adventures through the timestream soon led them to the year 2011, where they fell into the clutches of the Quintessons. Even the power of Moe, despite transforming Atari into a hamster-girl in a swimsuit who called the judge "big brother" and asked his permission to use the potty, was not enough to spare them from the Quintesson judge's verdict of "not guilty." Following this hair-raising experience, Atari was sent on her first solo mission to recover an AllSpark fragment, alongside Star Dust. Appearing in the vicinity of Mars later in the year 2011, Atari watched as the planet exploded, then kissed the Autobot leader of the era, Fortress Maximus, as he emerged from the conflagration. Oh, that reminds me to ask; Why universe hate Atari?

Atari delighted in her next mission, when she was taken into the past and found herself surrounded by animals. She never expected that one of the animals was a Transformer: Optimus Primal! Atari and Star Dust proceeded to hop through time so the girl could kiss each of Primal's forms, although she was initially hesitant to do so until Star Dust explained that this was not the Optimus Prime with whom she was familiar. When the task was done, however, he Allspark fragments recovered were suddenly seized by an invisible force and stolen away. Kiss Players radio drama #45 These thefts continued as the Kiss Players tried to gather more fragments, forcing the girls to give chase across the timestream, only for Brave Maximus to crash into the "Wall of Time", scattering the team across the multiverse. Atari found herself in the parallel reality of the "Unicron Trilogy", on Cybertron's moon at the height of the Transformers' war for the Mini-Cons. Encountering native Mini-Con Blackout, Atari found she could understand the little robot's beeping and booping, and she learned that he had become separated from his partner. As the moon trembled beneath Atari's feet, they realized that they were standing on the body of Unicron, but before they could do anything to help Blackout, the invisible force returned to bring Atari back to her home universe. Kiss Players radio drama #48 The "force", it transpired, was Primus, god of the Transformers, who had gathered the other Kiss Players. Primus explained that he had been responsible for stealing the Allspark fragments away—because they were actually portions of Unicron's shattered lifeforce, and the Sparkbots were his servants, trying to resurrect him! Thankfully, Primus was able to trap Unicron's lifeforce within the Earth, but he would not answer the Kiss Players' questions about their own future. As his last act before he transformed into a golden sphere, Primus returned the Kiss Players to the present day of 2007, mere moments after they had left on their adventure. Realizing that their future was not defined by Primus or any god, Shaoshao and Marissa made vows for the future, while Atari remained unsure of what she would do next, but realized at last the importance of truly living. Like all the Kiss Players girls, Atari's figures were pre-posed PVC figurines, unlike Marissa and Shaoshao, she got two figures, and in different sizes. Her first figure, sculpted by series designer Yūki Ōshima, was the unusual one, much larger than a standard Kiss Players figure and depicting Atari apparently recoiling from something. It came packaged with a tiny transforming Autorooper figure, representing the character after he had been shrunk, and a CD containing episodes 6-10 of the Kiss Players radio drama, as well as the exclusive audio adventure, "Atari's Close Call?!"

Atari's second figure was at the standard size for Kiss Players figurines and came packaged with the larger, 1:24 scale transforming Autorooper figure. She can sit in either the Autorooper's driver's seat or on his shoulder, but not a lot else, although she does come with a pair of alternate arms clutching a barf bag. She even has (what we hope is) a little bit of barf sculpted on her chin. Released on the week that followed the broadcast of the cliffhanger ending to the first year of the Kiss Players radio drama, the set included a CD containing episodes 21-30 of the series and the exclusive chapter that concluded the year's storyline, "You, I, and the Spinning Earth".

  • Atari-scream (2007)
A redeco of the first Atari PVC figurine, "Atari-scream" places Atari in a black uniform with a Decepticon insignia on her armband instead of the E.D.C.'s logo. Only available as an online-order exclusive from Dengeki Hobby magazine, the figure represents Atari while she was possessed by Starscream's ghost.

Notes

  • According to the series writer, Atari was originally going to be an elementary school student. However, Takara objected, pointing out that an elementary school student would not be legally eligible for a driver's license.
