Elephan is a Beastformer or Predacon from the Generation 1 continuity family.

Elephan (エレファン Erefan), aka Elly (エリー Erī) or Sledgehammer, is one of the many Beastformers who joined White Leo's resistance forces as Galvatron's Decepticons began to conquer the formerly-peaceful planet Beast with their army of cold-blooded insurgents. A gentle and emotional soul, he believes in peace above all and will open his heart to empathize with an opponent no matter who they are. He is known for being expressive and honest with his emotions and will both laugh and cry openly. Elephan's role in the Autobot-allied Beastformer forces is a transportation combatant, and while he is slow, his alertness is unmatched and when pushed he is powerful enough to send a house flying or can bring out his Elehammer MVP Weapon, which fires beams that can pierce through 10 centimeters of solid steel. He holds the rank of King of Stoll, in whose eponymous main city he was born, over Emperor Wildthunder. He fights particularly well alongside Wildthunder, whose speed makes up for Elephan's one weakness.

The Elephan were a species of Beastformer allied with the rebels led by White Leo against Decepticon invaders and their allies, the evil Beastformers led by Alligatron. Some Elephans were kidnapped, to be used as slaves in the construction of components of Scorponok's transtector. One Elephan was part of Big Serow's attack on the Decepticon stronghold that ultimately failed when the opposing attacks proved too much. Assistance soon came when the Autobot Transformers came, and two Elephans were there to welcome them.

The Elephan slaves were rescued through the efforts of Daniel, Wheelie, and the Monsterbots. At the same time, an Elephan was part of a force led by White Leo to rescue the slaves. The two Beastformer groups joined together and emerged from the caves just in time to see the Decepticon invaders leave the planet. Rebellion on Planet Beast

The Headmasters comic

Elephan, among others, was menaced by Predaking and the Sharkticons, led by Alligatron. They were able to escape when Brainstorm and Highbrow distracted the giant combiner. The Decisive Battle of Planet Beast!

Sledgehammer of Peptex was a heavily armored 'bot who trafficked contraband. When members of the Maximal Command Security Force raided a warehouse in the hopes of stopping a shipment of Energon from reaching the Resistance fighting against the Builders' reign, they came upon Sledgehammer. Stiletto, Wolfang, and Aura tried to bring him down, but Sledgehammer was so juiced up on Nucleon during the encounter that he managed to keep all three of them at bay, despite the massive amounts of damage he was dealt. Part of the first series of Takara's Beastformers toys, Elephan is an anthropomorphic African elephant in black robotic armor. His left arm ends in a sledgehammer. The rubsign on his... groin.... reveals one of three symbols; Fire, Water or Wood.

He was re-released in the subsequent second and third series; while the toy proper was not changed, the packaging and packed-in bio card was. The Series 1 release comes in a generic red-grid "Cybertron Beastformer" box, with a red-grid bio card with a painted character image on the front, though there was a random chance of his card being replaced by the rare "Holography Mirror" card. Series 2 came in a green-grid generic "Cybertron Beastformer" box, with the bio card putting the painted image on a jungle backdrop. Series 3's box was unchanged, but the bio card replaced the painted image with a simpler line-art image, first used in Hasbro's Battle Beasts cast poster. In the green-box releases, depending on the "Pack" he came in, there was a chance of his bio card being replaced with a rare "Secret Photo", "Bewitching Serpent Seal", or "VS Holography Mirror" card.

Re-released in the Transformers-less Beastformers sequel series, Elephan was given a straight re-release with new packaging and a new, more filled-out bio card with corrected coloring. This new card also gave his weapon, now branded an "MVP Weapon", the name "Elehammer" (エレハンマー Erehanmā).

He was sold in two similar-but-different styles of boxes. One wholly-generic version, sold in large display boxes like the Transformers releases, advertised the chance for the included bio card to instead be a rare holofoil card of White Leo with a "Burstsun" rubsign in a baggie taped to the back, so you could apply it to the Beastformer of your choice. The more common version has a slightly different box with a peg-hole in the top flap, and has a sticker on the bottom with his name and role on it.

Late in the run, the "mood ring" styled rubsigns were replaced with new rubsigns that revealed full-color Fire/Wood/Water images on black backdrops. (These rubsign variants also happened at the same time in the Hasbro Battle Beast version of the line.)

A small, super-deformed, articulation-free version of Elephan was seemingly intended to be sold as part of the Takara/Meiji candy toy assortment. A bio/data card matching the released candy-toy cards, with its own role-playing rules and using the Transformers-era painted character art, was released in packs of cards with candy, but the actual toy ultimately never saw release.
