The name or term "Grimlock" refers to more than one character or idea. For a list of other meanings, see Grimlock (disambiguation).
Grimlock is an Autobot Dinobot from the live-action film series continuity family.
When me Grimlock go clubbin', me make sure to pack extra mace just in case.

Grimlock is a Dinobot with a rather rough n' tough attitude. One of the most powerful warriors alive, his general approach to a problem is to smash it first, worry about the specifics later. This attitudes extends to his Autobot companions, who are expected to meet Grimlock's standard of strength. That said, the Autobots have a lot less to fear from this behemoth than the Decepticons.

Fiction

Movies

The five movies are the primary component of the live-action movie continuity family. Their events should be taken as canon for all other pieces of fiction listed below, unless otherwise specified.

Age of Extinction film

King Shark knows how you feel after being in Arkham Asylum.

Grimlock was a prisoner aboard Lockdown's ship until the Autobots detached that section and flew it to China, though Optimus did not inform his troops of their presence. When Galvatron's new Decepticons shot down their ship, Optimus went to recruit the Dinobots for their aid. Optimus was nevertheless amazed that the "legend" existed, and freed Grimlock and his men. Optimus explained to Grimlock that the Creators intended to wipe them all out, and urged them to stand with him, or refuse and die. Grimlock immediately challenged Optimus, but despite his immense size and strength, was bested in combat. Grimlock submitted to Optimus's lead, and allowed the Autobot leader to mount him. Grimlock and Optimus led the Dinobot-Autobot charge into Hong Kong, where Grimlock killed many Decepticons with ease.

Me Grimlock no Yoshi! Me Grimlock KING!

Grimlock later helped escort the Seed to a safe location, but Lockdown arrived and turned his tractor beam on them. Grimlock and the Dinobots would have been captured once again had Optimus not destroyed the tractor projector with a well-placed shot. Optimus ordered Grimlock and the others to flee while he fought Lockdown. The group subsequently held the line on a nearby bridge until Optimus, Bumblebee, and their human allies triumphed and killed Lockdown. Optimus granted Grimlock and the Dinobots their freedom, and Grimlock happily departed with his team for parts unknown. Age of Extinction

The Last Knight film

Spoilers expire in 50 days

In the years following the battle in China, Grimlock, along with Slug and three new Mini-Dinobots, joined the Autobots in hiding at Cade Yeager's scrapyard. Unfortunately, he developed a habit of stealing the local sheriff's cruiser and using it as a chew toy. On the day Cade encountered the dying knight Steelbane, he returned to find an angry sheriff demanding the return of his vehicle. Grimlock tried to hide the cruiser by eating it but was eventually berated into vomiting it back up. Cade then turned on his assistant Jimmy for not keeping Grimlock under control, who pointed out that without Cade the Autobots were uncontrollable and Grimlock had tried to eat him at least once. Grimlock later relaxed in the scrapyard while Cade called his daughter Tessa.

The next day, their refuge was discovered by the Decepticons and the T.R.F. forces. As their enemies prepared to invade, Cade and the Autobots escaped to a nearby town to carry out their emergency plan. Grimlock joined Slug in laying a trap for the pursuing TRF forces, bursting from beneath the road leading to the town and destroying the convoy. Grimlock then made his way to the town in time to save Cade and Izzie from Barricade, swatting the Decepticon with his tail, before slamming him into the ground. As Dreadbot ran in to assist, Grimlock snapped him up and killed the Decepticon bank robber. Grimlock remained in America after Cade was taken to England by Cogman and did not participate in the final battle on Cybertron.

How to Ride your Dinobot cartoon

Grimlock found himself being the guinea pig for Optimus's Dinobot-riding lessons. To his irritation, Optimus rudely beckoned him to move forward, and was thus thrown into a barn. Optimus's mood did not improve much, but Grimlock's did, as it was now time for him to ride Optimus. The Autobot leader proved a much more compliant steed, to Grimlock's joy. How to Ride

How to Ride a Dinobot! comic

Grimlock was minding his own business in a Chinese forest, when suddenly Optimus Prime and his Autobots arrived, intent on learning how to ride the mighty Dinobots into battle. Unfortunately for them, the Dinobots proved uncooperative steeds, with Slash tossing Hound through the air, Bumblebee nearly getting mauled when attempting to feed them and Scorn and Slug smashing Crosshairs and Drift together. When the Autobots queried Prime on why he wasn't doing the activities, he claimed he had mastered it already...only to be dragged along when Grimlock caught the scent of Decepticons! Kre-O cartoon

Grimlock participated in an enormous battle against the Decepticons... until Optimus Prime began talking about the plot of the live-action film series to the audience. He quickly grew bored during his leader's monologue and attempted to order a pizza over the phone. The beeping caused by Grimlock dialing up the pizza place kept on interrupting Optimus when he tried to spoil the plot of the fourth film. Optimus settled with introducing Grimlock and the rest of the Dinobots. Then Grimlock's pizza arrived, and the fighting started up once again. Take Us to the Movies Take Us Through the Movies

Grimlock served as Optimus's mount as the two of them burst in on a bunch of Vehicons building the Galvatron Factory Battle set. Announcing that it was "Dinner Time!", Grimlock used a sort of tractor beam to draw his victims into his maw. He also got to stomp down on Lockdown, and kicked his head away. Transformers Legends comic

As a lover of beast Transformers, Rattrap purchased a Grimlock toy at Transformers Celebration 2014. Silverbolt used it as a mount for Rhinox's Evasion Mode Optimus Prime, greatly upsetting Rhinox. TF4 Toy Party Part 2 While discussing how neat the toy was, the three found its weapon reminiscent of stereotypical cartoon meat and imagined that Grimlock wanted to eat it. TF4 Toy Party Part 3 They went on to compare Slug's battle mode to a spit roast, joking that when he was done, Slug would become Grimlock's "meat". TF4 Toy Party Part 4

  • Grimlock (Flip & Change, 2014)
    • Japanese Name: Big Grimlock
    • Japanese Release Date: 2014-7-19
    • Japanese ID number: LA02
Part of the first wave of Flip & Change toys, Grimlock transforms into a robotic horned Tyrannosaurus by way of an autotransformation gimmick, triggered by holding his tail parts and flipping him over and over himself (or spin his tail while he was standing on a flat ground). Grimlock features very limited articulation on the arms, and features 5mm-compatible hands. The toy was inadvertently sold by some Walmarts before the official May 17th street date for Age of Extinction merchandise.
The Japanese release of Grimlock, called "Big Grimlock" to separate it from the One Step Changer, has a primarily silver deco, especially on the dinosaur parts. It also has some other changes like golden teeth and red dino eyes. The Flip and Change construction gimmick is also removed from the release, which you have to transform him by hand.

Grimlock's attempt to cosplay as Beast Wars Megatron didn't go as well as he had hoped.
  • Grimlock (Power Battlers, 2014)
    • Japanese Name: Battle Attack Grimlock
    • Japanese Release Date: 2014-10-18
    • Japanese ID number: LA15
Power Battlers Grimlock is a simplified version of Grimlock with a more basic transformation and a gimmick featuring his spinning mace.
He was also released in Japan without any changes with an exception of the packaging.

  • Grimlock (One Step Changers, 2014)
    • Japanese Release Date: 2014-7-19
    • Japanese ID number: LA04
One-Step Changer Grimlock features a one-step autotransformation in both directions from robot to dinosaur, triggered by folding his robot shoulders/dinosaur thighs. His only articulation is the arms, which can move up and down. Grimlock also features a magnet on his right leg, which can accommodate with the Stomp & Chomp figure (see below). Also, due to the knee spikes on the legs somewhat getting in the way while transforming back to T. rex form, it must be adjusted by hand when converting in mid-transformation.
Like the Flip & Change version, the Japanese release of this toy features more silver than orange.

  • Transformers: Age of Extinction Collection (One-Step Changer six-pack, 2014)
The "Transformers: Age of Extinction Collection" set includes an unchanged One-Step Changer Grimlock, packed with an equally unchanged Drift, Lockdown, Bumblebee, Slug & the included One-Step Silver Knight Optimus Prime toy.

Me Grimlock take your all your precious money, no matter how silly me look.
  • Electronic Stomp & Chomp Grimlock (One Step Changers, 2014)
    • Accessories: Sword, Optimus Prime mini-figure
Stomp & Chomp Grimlock is a 22" tall figure designed as a centerpiece for the One-Step Changer line, featuring light and sound effects and a one-step autotransformation performed by squeezing and pulling the handle. A One-Step Changer, Power Battler, or the included non-transforming Optimus Prime figure can ride him in dinosaur mode, and the toy is able to detect if said rider is Autobot or Decepticon and change its electronics effects accordingly.
Please take note that the arms need to be in a straight position before you turn him back into a T. rex. His left leg is detached to fit in the package.
The toy was redecoed into another Grimlock.

Generations

Legion Class toys

Not even the kids will think that's a T.rex.
  • Grimlock (Legion, 2014)
Grimlock is a redeco of Prime Cyberverse Rippersnapper, transforming into a bipedal lizard creature. He can also transform into a leg for the Prime Hun-Gurrr mold to use in its combiner mode, though this is not advertised anywhere for obvious reasons.
This figure was available exclusively at Walmart stores in the United States, at Asda stores in the United Kingdom and at Müller drug stores in Germany.
This sculpt was also used to make Beast Hunters: Predacons Rising Cindersaur, Go! Jurara, Transformers (2014) Grimlock, and The Last Knight Glug.

Me Grimlock disapprove of meek scientists who mutate worms.
  • Optimus Prime & Grimlock (Legion two-pack, 2014)
    • Accessories: Sword, pistol
This time, Grimlock is a redeco of Energon Cruellock (10 years after it's release) packaged with a redeco of Revenge of the Fallen Optimus Prime. He transforms into a dinosaur-monster somewhat reminiscent of the American movie version of Godzilla (Now known as simply "Zilla") and comes with a handgun and a large sword, both of which store in his tail in dino mode. These pieces can combine into a larger weapon that can be used by other Transformers toys. He also comes with an opaque gray Energon chip which could be be attached to most Energon-line toys, but unlike every other release of an Energon toy the chip is glued to his body, concealing that the spark crystal is missing from the construction of this toy.
This two-pack was available exclusively at Walmart stores in the United States and at Asda stores in the United Kingdom.
This mold was also used to make Doom-Lock.

Voyager Class toys

  • Grimlock (Voyager, 2014)
    • Series / Number: M4 / #002
    • Japanese ID number: AD03
    • Japanese release date: 2014-05-17
    • Accessories: Two-piece spiked maul
Part of the first wave of Age of Extinction: Generations Voyager Class toys, Grimlock transforms into a silver and bronze Tyrannosaurus with articulated horns, and a button-activated, spring-loaded chomping jaw. He comes with a spiked maul that he can sorta wield via the smaller 5mm handle at the top of its haft. The maul's head and handle are two separate pieces, and the weapon can slide onto to his tail to store in dino mode... as a really long tail extension. Yeah...
There is a bronze paint color variation on the Hasbro release of this figure. The bronze paint can either be colored to match the bronze plastic -or- it can be colored very intensely, appearing oversaturated as more of an "orangey-bronze" color as seen on the Evolution 2-Pack and the Legion two-pack figure. This paint variation can be easily spotted when comparing Grimlock's robot mode hip pieces to each other, seeing the painted sides versus the plastic center and plastic dinosaur arms. Having both the bronze paint and the oversaturated "orangey-bronze" paint versions side-by-side makes the latter one much more noticeable in person.
The TakaraTomy version, part of the first wave of the Movie Advanced Series, lacks the silver paint on his dinosaur head, features additional paint on his robot face and legs, and has red dinosaur eyes.
This toy was later redecoed into Nemesis Grimlock and Transformers (2014) Dinobots Generation One 4-pack Grimlock, and retooled into Platinum Edition Dinobots set Grimlock.

ORANGE-a glad to see me again? Huh? Huh?? Nothing? Ah, ok.
  • Grimlock (Evolution 2-Pack, 2014)
    • 24 OF 30
    • Accessories: Two-piece spiked maul
As a Toys R Us exclusive, this pack includes a redecoed Age of Extinction Voyager Class Grimlock and a redeco of Energon Grimlock representing the Generation 1 character.

One of me Grimlocks are not like the other...
  • Silver Knight Optimus Prime & Grimlock (two-pack, 2014)
    • 29 OF 30
    • Accessories: Sword, shield
A G1-inspired redeco of Transformers: Generations Fall of Cybertron Voyager Class Grimlock that was only available in a two-pack with a Deluxe Class Silver Knight Optimus Prime figure. His sword & shield is cast in reddish pink transparent plastic, with the sword's details painted like the Japanese release & the Platinum Edition figure, while his shield is completely unpainted. Grimlock also features an Autobot insignia on his chest rather than the Lightning Strike Coalition insignia.
The two-pack was exclusively available at Target stores in the United States, Canada, and Australia, at Tesco stores in the United Kingdom and Hungary and at Galeria Kaufhof department stores in Germany. Also available in Russian toy stores.

  • Dinobots Unleashed 5-Pack (Platinum Edition, 2014)
    • Accessories: Two-piece spiked maul
Redecoed from the Age of Extinction Voyager Class figure, Grimlock sports a vaguely screen-accurate gray color scheme, with heavy use of chrome and transparent plastic. He comes packaged with similarly-themed redecoes of Scorn, Slug, Strafe and Slog

No G1 nostalgia for you America!
  • Grimlock G1 Color Ver. (Voyager, 2014)
    • Accessories: Two-piece spiked maul
Another redeco of the Age of Extinction Voyager, Grimlock G1 Color Ver. features a Generation 1-inspired deco, and was available to order only when purchasing advance tickets for Age of Extinction at Lawson convenience stores in Japan.

Leader Class toys
Me Grimlock tear mace out of (now-dead) dragon's hands. (Hasbro version pictured)
"...Me Grimlock had worse." (TakaraTomy version pictured)
  • Grimlock (Leader, 2014)
    • Series / Number: M4 / #002
    • Japanese ID number: AD20
    • Japanese release date: 2014-07-19
    • Accessories: "Dragontooth Mace", shield
Part of the first wave of Age of Extinction: Generations Leader Class toys, this version of Grimlock transforms into an oddly-elongated, chromed out, black-and-bronze Tyrannosaurus with an articulated jaw, and tiny vestigial arms. A large section of his dino mode rear detaches and splits into two accessories: a spiked mace-like weapon formed out of his rather short, pointy tail, which he can wield normally via 5mm post, as well as a spiky, sawbladed shield formed from the dino mode's hip armor, which can slot onto the dino feet on his forearms.
He features chrome on several pegs, tabs, slots, and holes, all of which have a nasty tendency to flake.
All releases of Age of Extinction Leader-Class Grimlock have very similar looking left & right robot mode feet and thus, are notorious for being incorrectly added to the figure during factory assembly, resulting in a left foot on a right leg, a right foot on a left leg, two left feet, or two right feet. Not having the right foot on the right leg and left foot on the left leg causes him to not stand properly because each foot is designed on the bottom to sit at a specific slanted angle. Both feet look very similar to one another, however they can be identified by finding the corresponding "L" and "R" on each one. If placed on a flat surface to be viewed, one will notice that both feet have subtle slants to their stance. Unfortunately, Leader Grimlock's feet cannot be swapped to correct this issue unless one manages to heat up the rivets holding them in with the tip of a soldering iron and carefully remove them. Prime Voyager Dreadwing and his brother Skyquake can also suffer from the same issue with their very similar looking left & right robot mode feet, however, their feet can be easily swapped around to remedy the problem (as long as you have the proper left and right feet on hand to do so).
This figure was only made available as a store exclusive in parts of Europe, at least in the United Kingdom (at Argos) and Germany (at Rossmann drug stores).
His stock photography features a completely different deco compared to the final product.
The TakaraTomy version is dubbed Black Knight Grimlock, and features a more screen-accurate deco... meaning he's almost entirely silver and grey, but with a bit of bronze. As with the Hasbro release, this Grimlock can also suffer from the incorrectly-assembled feet problem that the original Leader Class figure could have.

We were expecting a giant car.
  • Leader Class Grimlock & Leader Class Optimus Prime (Platinum Edition, 2014)
    • Accessories: "Dragontooth Mace", shield
This Platinum Edition two-pack includes a redeco of Leader Class Grimlock. The toy lacks chrome, and instead sports extensive metallic blue and green paint applications, seemingly to evoke the patina seen on the character on-screen.

Kre-O

"Me no have robot mode, so me have all these guns to compensate!"
The Kre-O "Grimlock Street Attack" set includes a buildable Dinobot beast Grimlock in his beast mode with two pairs of non-firing cannons. The included Gold Knight Optimus Prime Kreon (or any other Kreon) can ride on him. Grimlock also features two gimmicks: a grabbing claw on his tail, and a "Dinoforce Power" gimmick, which consists of a magnet in his mouth, which he can use to chomp down (if by chomp down, it mean magnetically grabs them with his mouth) the included Vehicon Kreons thanks to their ferrous-metal backpacks. The set also comes with a paifang Chinese gateway base with a swivel joint to smash through with.

"I have a big head and tiny arms!"
  • Dinobot Ride (2014)
    • Pieces: 46
    • Kreons: Optimus Prime

The building set also comes with a poster with a preview of all Kre-O Transformers products released in 2014.

"Me Grimlock do the opera".
  • Grimlock (Custom Kreon, 2014)
    • Set number: A9374/A6948
    • Pieces: 30
    • Accessories: Weapons rack, blade-weapon, buildable axe, sword, claw weapon, extra body parts
Part of the third wave of the Custom Kreon Age of Extinction Collection, Grimlock makes heavy use of the new parts created for Kre-O Dungeons & Dragons, what with the "knight" theme. He features a "bat'leth" blade-weapon from the Kre-O Star Trek line, a large chromed axe, a claw weapon, and a red sword. He also come with extra-clear body parts. Unlike most toys of the Kre-O Age of Extinction Dinobots, Grimlock is colored in screen-accurate silver.
Like the rest of his wave-mates, he saw very limited release, mostly in Hasbro Asia regions, and nowhere in the US.

Construct-Bots

Me Grimlock look like Bionicle.
  • Grimlock (Dinobot, 2014)
    • Accessories: Tail/Sword
Construct-Bots Grimlock is just the right size to be ridden by the smaller Dinobot Riders assortment, most notably Optimus Prime.

Now with extra angus beef!
  • Dinofire Grimlock (Dinobot, 2014)
    • Accessories: Tail/Sword, 6 Missiles
The sole larger class Construct-Bots toy, Dinofire Grimlock is an enormous Leader-sized figure. The tops of his thighs/robot shoulders feature large rocket launchers each capable of firing 3 missiles at the turn of a knob. Like all Construct-Bots Dinobots, Grimlock has a gear-driven gimmick wherein his dinosaur mouth also conceals a third launcher which also fires 3 missiles as well as lighting up when the gear on his back is rotated. He is additionally armed with a huge sword in robot mode.
Due to his construction, all of his ball joints are double-headed however they can become dislodged while handling the figure due to its impressive heft.
He comes included with a slight recolor of Dinobot Riders Optimus Prime.

Tiny Turbo Changers

  • Grimlock (Tiny Turbo Changers, 2017)
    • Series: 1
    • Bag Code: A
Released as part of the first wave of the blind-packed Tiny Turbo Changers line, Grimlock is a small, super-deformed toy that transforms from a cute robot into a cute mechanical Tyrannosaurus Rex in just a few steps! He features a pseudo-Automorph gimmick consists of the Tyrannosaurus Rex body being simultaneously "split" into an X-formation while converting into robot mode. Due to his simplified transformation scheme, his helmet horn ends up as his Tyrannosaurus Rex tail, and his robot mode feet ends up becoming his Tyrannosaurus Rex "chin".
He is so far; the only movie Grimlock toy released in 2017 to feature the color scheme from the Age of Extinction releases. Unlike most of the Tiny Turbo Changers, Grimlock is packaged in robot mode.

  • Optimus Prime and Grimlock (Toys"R"Us 2-pack, 2017)
Available with Optimus Prime, this Grimlock is a redeco of the figure above, now featuring Copper paint applications and some plastic color changes. As usual, he still can combine with Prime Hun-Gurrr.

  • At approximately 42 meters (140 feet) in length in alt-mode, Grimlock is more than three times as large as a real Tyrannosaurus.
