This article is about the HasTak character. For the external property character, see Sonic the Hedgehog (character).
Hedgehog is a Beastformer from the The Headmasters portion of the Generation 1 continuity family.
He's the fastest thing aliiiiive.

Born in Hogs Town, Hedgehog (ヘジホッグ Hejihoggu), or Heg (ヘッグ Heggu), had a great life until the Decepticons invaded his homeworld, Beast, raising an insurgent army from the dissatisfied cold-blooded Beastformers. As the Decepticon-allied Beastformers conquered the planet, Hedgehog joined White Leo's resistance army, excelling in his role as Special Forces combatant thanks in part to his quiet, inconspicuous demeanor allowing for efficient sneak attacks. Because of his silence, people tend to assume he's a gloomy fellow when in truth he enjoys comedy and pranks. Hedgehog is highly intelligent, specializing in the fields mathematics and geography, and can get a good grasp of an area's terrain from a single glance. He can tunnel through the earth thanks to his Hegrinder, an MVP Weapon that can act as a powerful drill.

Along with Rabbit Kid, Hedgehog was shot into space to track down the good Cybertronians, the Autobots, to help drive off the Decepticons and restore the old regime. He also holds the rank of King of Hogland, over Emperor Deaspider... who fights on the opposite side in the war. Okay then. Hedgehog has close bonds with fellow soldiers Rabbit Kid and the avuncular Yellow Giraffe.

Fiction

The Headmasters cartoon

Voice actor: Kōji Totani (Japanese)

While patrolling space in Battleship Maximus, the Autobots discovered a pair of aliens floating in space in exosuits. After they were brought in, they introduced themselves as Hedgehog and Rabbit Kid and pleaded for help in driving the Decepticon invaders off their formerly-bucolic homeworld.

Other Hedgehogs were part of a rebel force that attacked the Decepticon factory on Beast. A Devilbat struck down one Hedgehog, and the Decepticon counterattack was too much for the rebels to handle.

The Hedgehog and the Rabbit Kid with the Autobots were eventually brought to Beast, where they met up with White Leo.

A Hedgehog was later part of the contingent led by White Leo that went through a cave maze to reach the Decepticon factory to rescue the slaves kept there. During their rescue, the Autobot Transformers successfully drove away the Decepticon Transformers from Beast. Rebellion on Planet Beast

Legends comic

Hedgehog was among the Autobot Beastformers who fought in the 2011 war for Beast. LG51 Doublecross Prologue

In 2023, Hedgehog led a team in infiltrating Majin Zarak when Scorponok enslaved Beastformers to construct the giant, then sabotaged its power core so that it could be defeated by the Transformers in the Legends World. Evacuating Zarak before it disappeared into another dimension, Legends World in Imminent Danger! Part Two Hedgehog borrowed Spike Witwicky's Headmaster exosuit and returned to Beast to continue battling the Laser Beasts. When Repugnus yearned for the additional power of a Beastformer Headmaster, Hedgehog formed his head only to be injured by the Shocking Shark, destroying his head mode's faceplate and goggles. Automatic repair from Repugnus's end transformed Hedgehog's head mode into a form resembling the Monsterbot's own head, and together they helped end the war. The Road to Legends' Revival Chapter 1

When Galvatron II invaded the peaceful Beast with his forces in 2038, Hedgehog helped the joint Autobot-Beastformer-Laser Beast alliance by ordering Korepugs to attack Nemesis. They were shot down by Galvatron, and so Hedgehog joined with Repugnus to battle. However, the Monsterbots were no match for Galvatron's power, and the three Autobots tossed their heads away to save them from the Decepticon's brutal attack. The Road to Legends' Revival Chapter 3 Fortuantely, the Three Wise Ones made their presence known and revitalized the Monsterbots, allowing Hedgehog to Get On and grant Repugnus a new "Beastformer Mode" that took short care of Smokescreen and Dreadwing. Bonus Edition EX Repugnus The pair held off the Decepticons till Grotusque was able to bring Platinum Tiger out of his exile and the two Monsterbots sent the Decepticons fleeing. Hedgehog celebrated their victory with Repugnus. Bonus Edition EX Grotusque

Toys

Transformers: Beastformers

OC do not steal
  • Hedgehog (Beastformer, 1987)
    • Beast ID number: 19
    • Accessories: Staff
Part of the first series of Takara's Beastformers toys, Hedgehog is an anthropomorphic porcupine in yellow robotic armor. The rubsign on his chest reveals one of three symbols; Fire, Water or Wood.
The Hasbro Battle Beasts release of the figure can vary in the tone of the paint used on its armor, with some samples being a darker and glossier mustard-color; it's uncertain if the Takara version has similar (minor) paint variation.
He was re-released in the subsequent second and third series; while the toy proper was not changed, the packaging and packed-in bio card was. The Series 1 release comes in a generic red-grid "Cybertron Beastformer" box, with a red-grid bio card with a painted character image on the front, though there was a random chance of his card being replaced by the rare "Holography Mirror" card. Series 2 came in a green-grid generic "Cybertron Beastformer" box, with the bio card putting the painted image on a jungle backdrop. Series 3's box was unchanged, but the bio card replaced the painted image with a simpler line-art image, first used in Hasbro's Battle Beasts cast poster. In the green-box releases, depending on the "Pack" he came in, there was a chance of his bio card being replaced with a rare "Secret Photo", "Bewitching Serpent Seal", or "VS Holography Mirror" card.

Beastformers

  • Big Serow (Beastformer, 1988)
    • Beast ID number: 19
    • Accessories: "Hegrinder" MVP Weapon
Re-released in the Transformers-less Beastformers sequel series, Hedgehog was given a straight re-release with new packaging and a new, more filled-out bio card with corrected coloring. This new card also gave his weapon, now branded an "MVP Weapon", the name "Hegrinder" (ヘッグラインダー Hegguraindā).
The initial early releases of this series had the chance for any Beastformer to have the rare Burstsun symbol; we'll probably never know if Hedgehog was ever actually one of them. Later in the run, the "mood ring" styled rubsigns were replaced with new rubsigns that revealed full-color Fire/Wood/Water images on black backdrops. (These rubsign variants also happened at the same time in the Hasbro Battle Beast version of the line.)

  • Hedgehog (Gashapon/candy-toy Beastformer, 1988)
    • Meiji ID number: 3
    • Accessories: "Lens Gear" weapon
A small, super-deformed, articulation-free version of Hedgehog was sold both as a gashapon capsule prize by Takara, and as a candy toy with "chocoballs" through the candy/ snack company Meiji. The candy toy version came with a bio/data card with its own role-playing rules, using the old Transformers-era painted character art.
This stumpy lil fellow could be found in red, blue or green plastic, representing the Fire, Water and Wood elements (even though he still had a rubsign). All of the Meji Beastformers comes with a different Beastformer's weapon attached to their shoulder by a snippable sprue, common for inexpensive toys of that nature. Hedgehog comes with Giader's "Lens Gear" weapon, while Platinum Tiger has Hedgehog's weapon.

Legends

Hedgemaster.
  • Repug & Grotes (Repugnus & Grotusque) (2-pack, January 26, 2019)
    • ID number: LG-EX
Legends Hedgehog is a re-release of Titans Return Dastard with the very slight difference of a glossy paint finish and a black screw in contrast to a matte finish and silver screw of the Hasbro release. Hedgehog forms the head of Repug and is also compatible with any Deluxe, Voyager, or Leader Class Titans Return-style figure.
He and Repug were available in a multi-pack with Platinum Tiger and Grotes.
