Predacon (Armada)

Predacon is a Decepticon from the Armada portion of the Unicron Trilogy continuity family.

Predacon is a fanatic who experiments in the combination of organic tissue and standard Cybertronian robotics. He believes that through this process, Transformers can become far more powerful... and Predacon certainly packs a lethal punch. Though most Cybertronians find this idea repugnant, he was able to amass a cadre of loyal, fanatical followers.

This group became big enough to be worrying to the Autobots, who even sent an agent deep undercover to keep an optic on them and hopefully even discover just where this biomechanical technology came from, which is one thing the boisterous and charismatic Predacon is remarkably silent about.

Toy pack-in comics

In the aftermath of the Unicron Battles, Predacon began forcibly experimenting on Mini-Cons, getting Decepticons to gather more test subjects and bring them to his base in the Wastelands. Despite an attempt by the Autobots to thwart his schemes, Predacon managed to escape with his research. Armada Volume 5

Released in the fifth and final wave of Armada Max-Cons, Predacon is a redeco and retool of the Beast Wars Transmetal Megatron mold, transforming from a metallic T. rex to a robot mode with organic-looking parts. He also has a third "flight" configuration, flipping out a pair of VTOL fans from his beast-mode sides and "landing gear" from his feet. In robot mode, his tail becomes a massive articulated claw-whip.

Mini-Con Powerlinx plugs were added at the hubs of his turbine fans, as well as the parts that become his robot-mode shoulder-armor. Naturally, none of them activate any gimmicks, but they are given "power-up" paint effects. He is one of only two Armada toys to be released with two Mini-Con partners (the other being Sideways); he came with Side Burn and Skid-Z.

In an undocumented bit of extra play value, Predacon can attach energon stars to the outside of his legs (though the original Megatron toy cannot, as the corresponding part is too small on that version of the mold).

Unlike the original Hasbro release of the mold, the bronze parts of Predacon do not suffer from gold plastic syndrome.

Predacon was not part of the regular Takara Legends of the Microns line, but was released as a "USA Edition" exclusively through Toys"R"Us Japan's web site, in Hasbro packaging with stickers to convey legal information in Japanese.

This toy was repurposed as the Beast Wars: Uprising character Preditron.

Notes

• Predacon's push for the integration of biological components is a pretty apparent reference to the character his mold was originally made for, Beast Wars Megatron... specifically his role in Beast Machines, where his goal was to purge the organic materials from Transformer bodies.
• Unicron Trilogy Megatron's Cybertron Jungle Planet toy, itself a redeco of Beast Era Megatron's 10th Anniversary toy, appears to be colored in homage to Armada Predacon.
