Eight examples of the different kinds of designs a Matrix can have.

The term Matrix can refer to many different things in Transformers fiction.

In most cases, a Matrix is a sacred talisman possessing a great source of mystical power, and which often serves as a symbol of leadership. Though their designs may vary, most Matrices resemble a spherical crystal or orb of colored light surrounded by a similarly spherical metallic shell, from which two large handles jut out in opposite directions. The source of the energy contained within a Matrix varies; sometimes it's the essence of the Transformers' creator-god Primus (as in most cases of the Matrix of Leadership), other times it's an alternate source whose origins remain shrouded in mystery. In some cases, a Matrix can even provide access to the Transformers' afterlife dimension.

Though most Matrices are carried by heroic individuals like Autobot and Maximal leaders, some have been known to be owned by Decepticons, Predacons, and even servants of the Dark God Unicron.
