Rah! I'm a mon-stah!

Malignus is the name of a faction of Cybertronians. In most realities they've been a revolutionary faction, though exactly who and what they're rebelling against depends.

Fiction

[edit]

The Malignus were a group of revolutionaries who united under Gutcruncher to take control of Axiom Nexus. When Gutcruncher was killed by Black Shadow, the Malignus thought the killers were Hubcap and Jackpot, formed an angry mob, and went after them. Gone Too Far

Ask Vector Prime

[edit]

A Malignus had once challenged a Metrotitan to a scanning contest. Though the Malignus won the first two rounds, the giant scanned the impenetrable Rainbow City prompting the Malignus, in foolish pride, to try and scan entropy itself, succeeding only in scattering the molecules of his spark. The story became known to one of the Thirteen who eventually recounted it to Vector Prime. Ask Vector Prime, 2015/07/17

Vector Prime noted that some lower-gradient Nexus universes had a Malignus faction. Ask Vector Prime, 2015/08/16

Beast Wars: Uprising

[edit]

The Malignus began on the planet Rebirth, which had been ruled by the oppressive triumvirate, the Optimus. The Malignus began with Doomshot and Clench, followed soon after by a disillusioned Nucleon, who spoke out against the Optimus, who responded to their peaceful protests by labelling them a disease and driving them underground.

When the Mad Tyrant Galvatron arrived on Master looking for an army, the Malignus were receptive to his message of throwing off their oppressors and joined forces. Doomshot, Clench, and Nucleon used their knowledge to improve upon the already existing Headmaster, Powermaster, and Targetmaster technologies to make the first Triple-Threat Master with Galvatron himself. With that power, the Optimus were overthrown. Even the aid of the Autobots was no match against the combined power of the Malignus and Decepticons.

However, Galvatron decided to turn his mind to other matters, and attacked the Human Confederacy. His forces lost, and the Malignus were exiled to Cybertron, along with what was left of the Decepticons. A Brush With Infamy–Prologue

Toys

[edit]

The Malignus faction came from Estrela's Brazilian version of the Generation 1 toyline, along with the Optimus faction. The toys were redecos of various Mini Vehicles:

While Estrela also released Turbo, he was not identified as a Malignus at the time, but retroactively given the allegiance in later fiction.

Notes

[edit]
  • "Malignus" was the original name given to the Decepticons in the first batch of Brazilian translations for the original Transformers comic (and, likewise, "Optimus" was the localized name for the Autobots). However, as Estrela released their batch of Optimus and Malignus toys featuring what appeared to be entirely new characters with a new set of insignias and seemingly no connection to the concurrently available media, fans started treating the two names as fully fledged alternative factions in the broader Transformers universe rather than just translations. Eventually, modern official media depictions of both the Optimus and Malignus would also adopt this perspective.
