Can we say "Mother!"

Now, Optimus Prime may thoroughly believe his credo of "freedom is the right of all sentient beings", but he tends to revoke that in the case of the Decepticons. Thus, when entering combat, Prime will use his ion blaster, his barrage cannon, his Energon Hooks, and his Dual Energon Swords<ref>Battle Bios at Hasbro.com</ref> (or Energy Swords)<ref>MPM-4 Optimus Prime accessory names.</ref> to their fullest effect. Possessing one on each arm, he charges the swords, also known as battle blades,<ref name="ROTFMU">Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen: The Movie Universe</ref> via a quantum electric generator with a max yield of one thousand degrees Celsius and a burn rate of five kilojoules per second.<ref name="ROTFMU"/>

This makes it a pretty handy weapon. Especially if you have a preference for going after your enemy's face.

Fiction

[edit]

Transformers film

[edit]
If in the first movie he had one, and in the second movie he had two, then in the third movie, he...ah...

While escorting the AllSpark to Mission City, Prime and the Autobots were set upon by the Decepticons Barricade and Bonecrusher, the latter of whom transformed into robot mode on the freeway to confront the Autobots. Transforming himself, Optimus engaged Bonecrusher in a short but fierce battle, with the Autobot leader punching Bonecrusher off an overpass with sufficient force to pop out one of his optics. Partially blind and more enraged than usual, Bonecrusher began wildly swinging his tail claw, but Optimus ducked behind a support pole and unsheathed his right Energon Sword. Using it to full effect, Optimus sliced off Bonecrusher's right arm and then jammed the sword through the Decepticon's neck, decapitating him. Transformers

Revenge of the Fallen film

[edit]
Roses are red

NOW GIVE ME YOUR FACE!

While trying to rescue Sam Witwicky from the Decepticons, Optimus was forced into a three-on-one battle against Megatron, Starscream, and Grindor. After having his mouth plate shattered, Optimus unsheathed both his Dual Energon Swords and used them to slice and dice his would-be destroyers, repeatedly stabbing Megatron and Starscream, and severing Grindor's right arm and rotors before throwing the right blade into Grindor's leg, and removing his head using a pair of hooks.

Later, after Optimus Prime was resurrected by Matrix of Leadership and combined with the parts of Jetfire, he worked his way through the floating ring of debris surrounding the Star Harvester to reach Megatron and The Fallen. The battle between them was relatively short, but intensely brutal, with Optimus slicing off Megatron's fusion cannon arm with his remaining Energon Sword before sending him flying through a wall. The fight ended with Optimus slicing off The Fallen's chin (and a few fingers) with the blade which the Fallen then ripped off before Optimus proceeded to tear off his face with The Fallen's own staff. Revenge of the Fallen

Dark of the Moon film

[edit]
He pulled out the sword to keep people from laughing at his "BLAUGHAUGHAUGH" when the Driller tipped him earlier.

Optimus first used his Energon Sword, handheld, in a battle in Chernobyl after retrieving it from his trailer along with his shield. Shockwave fled the area with his pet Driller, causing Optimus to simply discard his sword until later.

During the Decepticon invasion of Chicago, Optimus flew in with his flight tech, took Driller head on with machine guns, and decapitated the creature by swooping downwards and slamming himself and his sword through its neck. Later on, he swooped on to the battlefield in a different area, impaling and tossing an Audi Decepticon and slicing a protoform in half. He proceeded with the charge down the street, and took out a Scrapper unit and a protoform with both of his swords drawn. He then used one in his fight against Sentinel with an axe in hand as well, but Sentinel eventually cut off the arm using the sword. Dark of the Moon

Age of Extinction film

[edit]
"Aw, dammit, I just paid these things off!"

Optimus used his Energon Sword whilst fighting Galvatron for the first time. After engaging with Galvatron in fist-to-fist combat, Optimus unsheathed the blade and used it to turn the tide on the fight, causing Joshua to make Galvatron fight harder. When thrown back by Galvatron, Optimus pushed the sword into the ground to stop sliding into Tessa. Optimus then drove the sword through the Vortex Grinder in Galvatron's chest, disintegrating most of the sword. The swords were later replaced by Optimus' Knight Sword. Age of Extinction

Toys

[edit]

Transformers (2007)

[edit]

Leader Class

[edit]
  • Optimus Prime ("Premium Series" Leader Class, 2008)
  • Optimus Prime Battle Mode (Leader Class, 2008)
The first Movie Optimus Prime toy to feature the Energon Sword was the Hasbro "Premium" release of Leader class Optimus Prime and TakaraTomy's Optimus Prime Battle Mode, both of which were extensive redecos and minor retools in an attempt for greater accuracy. Additionally, the ion blaster was replaced by the Energon Sword (here called the "energy sword"), which, through the Automorphing gimmick, flips from Optimus's forearm to cover his fist, after which the blade can be slid out of his scabbard. Due to its tacked-on nature, the design of the sword and the mechanism for its deployment aren't very accurate to the depiction in the movie.

Revenge of the Fallen

Leader Class

[edit]
I will not stop telling you that I am Optimus Prime. Ever!
  • Optimus Prime (Leader, 2009)

  • Optimus Prime Limited Clear Color Edition (Leader, 2010)
  • Optimus Prime Gold Version (Leader, 2010)
By the time Revenge of the Fallen rolled around, Hasbro/TakaraTomy had integrated the Energon Swords into Optimus Prime's arm design, resulting in a much more accurate depiction of the weapons. Triggered by a switch on the inner sides of his forearms, two Energon Swords flip out of the outer sides of his arms.

Voyager Class

[edit]

    • ID number: MPM-4
    • TakaraTomy Release Date: September 16, 2017
The glorious new Masterpiece Optimus Prime comes with two of Prime's signature face cleavers. They tab in behind his wrists and store on the sides on his Ion Blaster.

Studio Series

[edit]
  • Optimus Prime (Voyager Class, 2018)
  • Transformers 15th Anniversary (Multi-pack, 2022)
  • Revenge of the Fallen 15th Anniversary Autobot Multipack (Multi-pack, 2024)
Studio Series Optimus Prime features two beautiful new battle blades that connect underneath his fists with 5mm pegs. They can store on his robot back and on his truck bed. An early run of the figure features cloudy semi-translucent blades (in packaging coded "73461"), with later runs featuring proper translucent blades ("80171").
The Transformers 15th Anniversary Multipack includes the blades with the retooled Optimus Prime mold, redecoed with a sparkly reddish-orange plastic and silver paint. The Revenge of the Fallen 15th Anniversary Multipack again includes the blades with the updated mold, but this time in their original deco. Using the blades with the updated mold does slightly dislodge his forearm panels. They can still store on the truck bed, but in robot mode they can awkwardly tab onto the blue panels on his back (sticking out the sides like wings) or his shoulder pads.

  • Optimus Prime (Leader Class, 2019)
This Optimus Prime comes with a handheld version of the Energon sword as seen in Dark of the Moon, cast in gray plastic with the blade painted orange. The sword can store in his trailer/Armored Weapons Platform.

  • Optimus Prime (Leader Class, 2025)
Age of Extinction Optimus Prime comes with an Energon sword cast in blue plastic painted over in silver. It is shorter and much thicker than the prior two blade molds. It can be be held normally or tab into his wrists. The sword can store on tabs on either side of Optimus's backpack (though this risks chipping the paint on those tabs) and on tabs at the back of the truck mode. It also fits on a tab on the underside of the Vector Shield.

Revoltech

[edit]
Accept no imitations! (No.030/LR-049 version pictured)
(No.040/LR-044 version pictured)
  • Optimus Prime (2011)
    • Series number: 030
    • Legacy of Revoltech ID number: LR-049
    • Accessories: Two open hands, two fists, Energon sword, five guns
  • Jet Wing Ver. Optimus Prime (2012)

    • Legacy of Revoltech ID number: LR-044
    • Accessories: Two open hands, two fists, Jet Wing, Energon axe, Energon sword, sword handle adaptor, alternate head, display base, name plate
Number 30 in the Revoltech Sci-Fi series, this non-transforming Optimus Prime is sculpted to resemble his Dark of the Moon appearance. His Energon sword (and the other weapons) can attach to several points on his body, or combine with the other weapons to form one giant unwieldy supergun.

Notes

[edit]
  • The inclusion of the Energon Sword in the 2007 Transformers movie was made after Hasbro/TakaraTomy's toy designs had been locked down, which is why the Optimus Prime toys released during the movie's run lacked the prominently featured melee weapon.
  • Normally, Optimus's hands retract before his Energon Swords come out, similar to the original Optimus's energon-axe). This is seen during his battle with Bonecrusher and the forest fight against the Decepticons. Most of his toys, however, instead feature the swords sliding out from the forearm armor with the hands still visible underneath.
    • However, during his battle against The Fallen, his hand is visible underneath the Energon Sword, making the toys accurate in this respect.
