Confirmed news

For dry, red eyes, the difference is clear: Clear Eyes.
Because ‘Transformers 2′ sounds stupid.

Roberto Orci, MTV Movieblog July 24,2008

Current information includes:

  • Early in production, Producer Tom DeSanto said he envisioned a storyline introducing the Constructicons.[2]
  • Writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman recruited Ehren Kruger to help them write the screenplay. Michael Bay and producers Don Murphy, Tom DeSanto, and Lorenzo di Bonaventura are also returning.[3]
  • The producers expect that with a bigger budget and the special effects worked out, the Transformers will have a larger role and more screen time.[citation needed]
  • According to the 2008 ShoWest edition of Dolby News, the film will be in 3-D.[4]
  • Michael Bay has claimed that the studio is putting out deliberate misinformation, to obscure real leaks.[5] (Like our jobs weren't hard enough.)
  • A key character will return and "attempt to settle a score".[6]
  • Roberto Orci confirmed that there is no '2' in the title of the sequel.[7]
  • Aaron Hill is confirmed to play a supporting in the film.[8]
  • During San Diego Comic-Con 2008, in an interview on July 25th, Simon Furman claimed that the film would feature a character called The Fallen, which was a character they created for Dreamwave's The War Within: The Dark Ages[9] Three days later, IDW Publishing writer Chris Mowry corroborated the claim in an interview with MTV Splash Page, calling "The Fallen" the main villain of Revenge (Arcee was also confirmed in the same interview, but the reference to her was mysteriously removed shortly after publication). [10] Less than a week after this, however, Michael Bay reiterated that everything leaked thus far is part of their misinformation campaign and that only a handful of people involved with the production of Revenge have seen the script, contradicting IDW's interviews where their representatives confirm that they have the script. Additionally, Bay claimed the only truth about the film was Sam going to college.[11] Curiously, on August 5th 2008, after a fan posted on Michael Bay's forum pointing out the contradiction, all references to the Fallen were removed from the aforementioned interviews, as well as any references to IDW Publishing having the script.
  • When questioned about whether the Transformers would have more flat surfaces and have less internal machinery exposed compared to the designs from the first movie, Roberto Orci answered with an emphatic "YES".[12]
  • An official behind-the-scenes video from the first day of shooting (June 2, 2008) at the former steel plant in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania was posted on Wal-Mart's public website in early September of 2008. The video shows police cars with Chinese markings, Josh Duhamel and Tyrese Gibson shooting an action sequence together with other actors and extras dressed as soldiers, and an Audi R8 being chased by three differently-colored motorcycles, all three of them equipped with drivers wearing the same outfit.[13]
  • In an interview with BANG! Showbiz, Shia LeBouf stated that the injuries he suffered in his recent vehicular collision were written into the script and did not adversely affect the filming schedule.[14]
  • A December 29, 2008 USA Today article on Revenge detailed parts of the plot as well as confirming some Transformer cast members.[15]
  • Empire magazine's February 2009 issue features information on the role of the Egyptian Pyramids in the Movieverse's backstory. Michael Bay also confirmed The Fallen and denied Megatron would be resurrected (this later turned out to be untrue). Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics resembling helicopters will be revealed to be depictions of Transformers who visited Earth before the pyramids were built.[16]
  • On January 14, 2009, Roberto Orci confirmed in an interview with IGN at the Television Critics Association press tour that Ravage would be a character in the film, and added that there is a Pretender.[17]
  • On January 29, 2009, Activision's website for the Revenge of the Fallen video game adaptation came online and revealed the robot modes of two new characters (later revealed to be Skids and Mudflap). However, this activation of the website appears to have been in error, as the site was taken offline hours later, with Activision requesting fan sites remove images of the characters.[18]
  • Also on January 29, 2009, Simon Furman commented on MTV Movie Blog about how the Dinobots wouldn't fit very well into the movie's universe, and that he is glad they were dropped from the cast very early in development.[19]
  • On February 1, 2009, the first official trailer for the movie was aired during Super Bowl XLIII.[20]
  • Michael Bay stated in interview with The Collider the he obtained permission to film in Egypt by contacting Zahi Hawass, secretary general of Egypt's council of antiquities, who turned out to be a fan of the 2007 Transformers movie.[21]
  • In the issue 140 February of Toyfare magazine, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura confirmed that the Fallen is one of the Thirteen original Transformers, likening the 13 to "apostles" and claiming the schism between Autobots and Decepticons to have been the Fallen's responsibility. He also stated that Devastator would be over 100 feet tall.[22]
  • During the Chicago Auto Show 2009, General Motors/Chevrolet issued a press releasing identifying several new Autobot characters who turned into various Chevy concept cars, including Sideswipe, Skids, Mudflap and Jolt. The press release also confirmed the return of John Turturro and Glenn Morshower, and revealed new cast member John Benjamin Hickey. [23]
  • Hasbro unveiled the Revenge of the Fallen toyline at the New York Toy Fair 2009 on February 14. Among the (officially) revealed were the Devastator and Constructicon toys, as well as the robot forms of Sideswipe, Mudflap and Skids.[24]
  • On February 16, the full teaser trailer that was released online, revealing the return of Scorponok.[25]
  • Later that same day, official in package stock photos revealed the name of the Audi R8 Decepticon seen in the trailers to be Sideways. [26]
  • After a short and poorly excuted "misinformation campaign" on the part of Michael Bay, Paramount and their licensees where they claimed that Megatron was not in the movie despite all officially released evidence to the contrary (including Megatron's brief appearance in the February 1 Superbowl tv spot and the February teaser trailer), Roberto Orci confirmed that Megatron does indeed return.[27]
  • On March 4, 2009, Hugo Weaving revealed he would be returning as Megatron in Revenge of the Fallen and in fact had already recorded his dialogue. When asked of how Megatron would be resurrected, Weaving kept mum, but pointed out that Optimus Prime took a surviving sliver of the All Spark out of Megatron's chest in the previous movie.[28]
  • On March 6, due to the reports of Weaving's return, Michael Bay finally admitted Megatron was back, but claimed that Megatron would only appear briefly in a flashback to the past, despite the fact Megatron can be seen pinning Sam Witwicky to the ground in Revenge's tv spot and teaser trailer. One can assume that the director was trying to salvage some form of audience surprise in seeing Megatron return in the movie. In other news of a presumably legitimate kind, Bay said that the movie would go into the distant past and explain the history of the Primes.[29]
  • Shortly after an interview with voice actor Frank Welker was posted on fan site TFW2005.com, in which he revealed he had not been contacted by the film crew for a part, Bay made a post on his forum that he was now interested in casting Welker as Soundwave[30]
  • On March 22, Roberto Orci responded to a fan's questioning regarding the idea of casting Leonard Nimoy as The Fallen by stating that he had actually mentioned it with Nimoy, but fan outcry has also given Frank Welker consideration. [31]
  • In an interview with Sci Fi Wire on March 31st, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman said they had looked through the comics and cartoons for the "most elemental bad guy" that "jumped off the material" and found that in the Fallen. They also stated that due to production necessities (Hasbro and Bay needing characters for scenes and design to begin as soon as possible) and the 2008-2009 Writers Strike, some characters were in their initial treatment while others were designed specifically for the movie production, and that due to the overall numbers of robots, the audience would not get to know all of the Transformers closely. Indeed, Orci and Kurtzman referred to some characters via descriptors such "Volt" (Jolt) and "Wheelbot" (Demolishor). They also confirmed that Nimoy was open to playing the Fallen if the role was offered, and that they were in the middle of hashing it out with Frank Welker over a role in the movie, but the final decision was down to Bay.[32]
  • A USA Today article on April 1, 2009 added a heap of confusion by stating that there are seven Constructicons (including a new character named Overload), referred to Demolishor and "Scavenger" separately; and commented that Arcee was the only female Autobot, even though there are a total of three very similar feminine motorcycle characters in the film and supporting fiction. In news of a presumably correct sort, the article also revealed details about Ravage (he would have a skill set not seen before, will not turn into anything and will not talk); Jetfire (doesn't transform very well due to age, knows the Decepticons' plans but forgets parts of it); The Fallen (Transformers version of Lucifer, defiance and arrogance led to his banishment into another dimension, holds the key to life on Earth and Cybertron), Devastator (made Steven Spielberg curse in appreciation); confirmed Wheelie and finally, revealed the new insect-like creature referred to as "The Doctor". [33]
  • On the same day, Yahoo Movies featured a list of the Autobots and Decepticons, repeating much of the same basic information featured in the USA today article, including the same confusing information about the Constructicons (7 members form Devastator, 8 members in total, Demolishor and Scavenger referred to as separate characters) and finally officially revealed the return of Ratchet. The article also had a new still of Ravage and a rather dodgy-looking chart listing the names of all the robot chracters. [34]
  • On April 16, Michael Bay reported on his forum that Steven Spielberg had just seen his cut of Revenge of the Fallen and had praised it as being "awesome" and better than the previous Transformers movie. Bay also revealed that the full trailer had just been completed and will be attached to X-Men Origins: Wolverine, coming out on May 1.[35]
  • On April 17, actor Tony Todd's website revealed that he would be voicing an as-yet unnamed character in Revenge.[36]
  • Soon after, footage of Revenge that was shown to the press at ShoWest 2009 was released online by Michael Bay's staff... and then swiftly removed. An unexpected revelation was the apparent return of Blackout, despite his death in the previous movie. [37] A few days later, Michael Bay explained that the fơotage was only supposed to be online for 12 hours, and confirmed the CGI was far from complete. Bay also reported that the trailer was being printed and will be included with Wolverine and Star Trek.[38]
  • Actors Ramon Rodriguez and Isabel Lucas revealed some details about their characters in an interview with MTV.com on April 21, 2009. [39]
  • On the MTV Movies blog, Michael Bay reported that they were still doing for the voices for the film, and that he was (jokingly) nervous of asking his relative Leonard Nimoy if he wanted to voice The Fallen in the movie for fear of offending him with the relatively low pay allotted to voice actors.[40]
  • The World Premiere of Revenge of the Fallen will be held at TOHO Cinemas Roppongi Hills, in Tokyo, Japan on June 8th, 2009, with Michael Bay, Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox attending. [41]
  • During an interview for UGO Movie Blog, Roberto Orci confirmed that he thinks that it is official that Frank Welker will be voicing Soundwave. [42]
  • On April 30, the Revenge of the Fallen theatrical trailer was officially released online at Yahoo! Movies. [43]
  • Linkin Park and Hans Zimmer will be working with Steve Jablonsky on the score of the movie. Linkin Park also announced they were writing a song, called "New Divide". It will be one of the theme songs for the movie, and will be doing several interpretations on that theme. [44]
  • On May 13, Glenn Morshower spoke about his role in Revenge with IGN.com, stating that even though his character in the 2007 Transformers movie had been killed, he was asked by Michael Bay to return for the sequel to play a new character named after him. [45]
  • On May 18, three Revenge TV spots were aired on North American television. Michael Bay's web staff later uploaded them onto Vimeo.com. [46] [47] [48]
  • That same day, Linkin Park's new single, "New Divide", was released exclusively on iTunes.
  • In a chat with the LA Times "Hero Complex" blog on May 21, Michael Bay revealed that Tom Kenny has a voice role in Revenge, and that Rainn Wilson's character was based upon a film instructor at his alma mater of Wesleyan University. [49]
  • In a June 22nd article in Forbes (released online on June 4th), Michael Bay talked about his philosphy in movie-making, his demand of part-ownership of movies he makes, and the revelation that he receives an 8% cut of all toy sales from the Transformers movies.[50]
  • On June 8th, 2009, the movie had its world premiere in Japan. Michael Bay, Shia LaBeouf, Megan Fox, Josh Duhamel, Tyrese Gibson, Isabel Lucas and Ramon Rodriguez attended.[51]. Other countries such as South Korea[52], the United Kingdom and Germany followed over the course of the next few days.
  • At last, the day of the release rolled around. And we still haven't learned the name of the purple motorcycle.

Transformers sequel and the 2007-2008 Writers Strike

In late 2007, during preproduction for then-untitled Transformers sequel, the Writers Guild of America went on strike. At the time, Roberto Orci stated that the strike could likely delay Transformers 2's release. However, Michael Bay refuted this, claiming the movie was still on schedule.[67] The reason behind Bay's confidence was discovered by Orci shortly after the strike ended. The director had apparently taken the outline the writers had handed in the night before the strike, and begun movie prep based on it.[68]

Titan Magazines Transformers movie comics

While the Decepticons were disgusted with the pro-Autobot propaganda of Bay's first documentary #13's Star Screams, they're quite optimistic about the second film. Starscream has taken a strong interest in it, going to the trouble of personally convincing Soundwave to be in the film 15's Star Screams.

The Decepticons promise this new documentary will show a glorious Decepticon victory #10's Star Screams - whether it's in the script or not. #18's Star Screams

Shockingly, even they are under a non-disclosure agreement regarding the script; Starscream fearfully refers to a greater power keeping him quiet. #22's Star Screams Talking about it could even undermine the Decepticon war effort! #23's Star Screams

In the same week the film came out, the Decepticons suddenly became unhappy with it and the detente period ended. Bay, Kurtzman, and Orci are once again marked for extermination for their propaganda films. #1's Law and Disorder
