TASTE THE RUNGBOW

Some say that I once ate an entire mammoth. And that I can lift a car over my head, but only if I have recently punched Piers Morgan in the face.

All I know is, I'm not The Stig. But I am Stig's Cousin Steve, from Tylehurst, near Reading!

Toys

Beast Machines

I point and laugh at show-accuracy.
  • Optimus Primal (Deluxe, 2000)
    • Accessories: Energy shuriken

The first Beast Machines Optimus Primal is a dark bronze and translucent blue technorganic gorilla that transforms into a technorganic robot. His right robot-mode arm is spring-loaded to throw the shuriken that stores in his left leg (the ape mode's left shoulder). Like all Beast Machines toys, he has a hidden "spark crystal" that displays his faction allegiance; Primal's is in his chest, revealed with the spring-loaded "flexing" motion that also moves his beast-mode face up for snarling while posing. His robot-mode head also features a changing expression via sliding brow/skullcap.

Official Hasbro stock photography of this toy shows a differently-molded shuriken, lacking the "energy flame" effect.

Robots in Disguise

File:Obsidian rid 2.jpg
So that's where chocolate milk comes from.
  • Obsidian (Basic, 2002)
    • Accessories: Twin rotors
A redeco of the Beast Machines Vehicon Obsidian, Obsidian transforms into a Cybertronic dual-rotor helicopter similar in design to the "Osprey". In both modes, his rotors can be used as missile-blades through a pressure-launch mechanism.
This mold was also used to make Universe Obsidian. It was considered for use as the Wrecker Rotorbolt, which never made it past the hand-painted sample stage.

Armada

Functioning arms are for chumps.
  • Hoist with Refute (Deluxe, 2003)
    • Japanese ID number: MC-11
Smokescreen returned in a new body with the name "Hoist", transforming into a Cybertronic excavator, with a new Mini-Con partner Refute (who, in Japan, was just the upgraded form of Liftor). Plugging a Mini-Con onto his right arm unlocks his shovel-arm punch attack. The feature remains unlocked until the block is manually returned to its latched position.
The Takara version had a fairly significant color difference from the Hasbro version, replacing his dark brown plastic with a swirled, semi-translucent gunmetal.
The same mold (with the molded Autobot sigil replaced by a smooth block for a sigil tampograph) is used by Universe Ransack. A heavily-retooled version of the mold is used by Cybertron Longrack and BotCon 2006's Darksyde Dinobot.
This mold has a common misassembly error; his left arm's ratchet-joint is off a notch, preventing the arm from "clicking" to a proper level-with-the-ground position in vehicle mode.
Oh, that's just a daytime vampire. Common around this time of year.
  • Powerlinx Optimus Prime (Super Base, 2003)
    • Accessories: Corona Sparkplug Mini-Con, trailer/armor, light-up rifle, missile, left & right smokestacks
An extensive late-run redeco of the Super Base Armada Optimus Prime toy, "Powerlinx" Optimus Prime sports the darker colour scheme the character takes on in the Armada cartoon episode "Origin" following a Mini-Con power-up, but he is not precisely show-accurate—the deco would later be fine-tuned with more accurate details for release in Japan as the Magna Convoy DX giftset (see below). In addition to now sporting fully-mobile Super Mode arms without the movement-impeding tabs, Prime still comes with all his features and accessories, though for this release, his Mini-Con partner Sparkplug got retooled with a new rear chassis and a blinged-out golden chrome body as "Corona Sparkplug".

Energon

"YES! In my upgraded form, I can speed around in the snow and... erm... whose idea was this again?"
  • Snow Cat (Deluxe, 2004)
    • Japanese ID number: SD-10
    • Accessories: 2 missiles
Snow Cat transforms into a G.I. Joe "Snow Cat" SAM half-track cast in primarily white and light blue plastics, with clear and burgundy for accents. In vehicle mode, the front wheel-hubs and side-skirts can be lowered to form skis for the vehicle to travel on, while the sideskirt-skis fold down from his feet in robot mode to allow him to "ski". He features twin spring-loaded missile launchers available to him in both modes; in robot mode, they end up as a back-mounted over-shoulder assembly. Unusually for Transformers of this era, he has a visible cockpit interior with a partially frosted windshield and working windshield wiper, further homaging the G.I. Joe toy he was designed after.

"I couldn't find my clothes, so I stole Two-Face's. Wonder if anyone'll notice."
  • Omega Supreme (Supreme, 2004)
    • Japanese ID number: SC-22
    • Accessories: 2 missiles
Energon Omega Supreme is nominally composed of two major components, the Omega Train—a train engine with a large construction arm on its caboose—and the Omega Battleship—a multi-gunned space battleship. Both components can link together in vehicle mode to form the Cybertronian Armoured Super Train, and can be reconfigured into ground based weapon emplacements. Additionally, the two parts Powerlinx combine together, along with the Omega Headmaster component to form the robot Omega Supreme, or without the Headmaster to form Omega Grand.
In this mode, Omega Supreme vaguely looks like his Generation 1 namesake. He features an extending claw gimmick on his right arm, along with electronic lights and sounds in his left arm, with both gimmicks accessible in all modes and combinations. Additionally, there are Mini-Con compatible 5mm posts on both sides of both shoulder. There is an Energon Chip connector on the ship's deck/left hand, as well as a 5mm post hole on either side.
He can combine with Energon Optimus Prime to form Powerlinx Omega Supreme (called Optimus Supreme in the cartoon, as noted above), with Optimus sitting inside Omega Supreme's chest cavity. The Omega head component, capable of transforming into its own robot mode, can be stored in Omega Supreme's right shoulder while in the Optimus Supreme configuration. This configuration also allows the attachment of Optimus Prime's Prime Force drone limb team or the dis-articulated parts of Wing Saber as auxiliary weapons.
The main difference between the US Energon and Japanese Superlink releases is the latter version used silver paint on his thighs and biceps, to give more uniformity to the colour scheme, and has orange paint on his face to make it stand out better underneath the head canopy.
This mold was redecoed into "The Powerlinx Battles" Omega Sentinel, and was retooled and redecoed to make the Platinum Edition "Year of the Snake" Omega Supreme.

Cybertron

He transforms into a temper tantrum.
  • Metroplex (Leader Class, 2005)
    • Japanese ID number: GC-23
    • Accessories: "Sparkdrinker", gold Giant Planet Cyber Planet Key
Metroplex transforms into a Gigantion bucket-wheel excavator. In this mode, his bucket-wheel/shovel assembly is on a rotator and contains numerous ratchet-joints, plus the wheel can spin, though it does not do so freely. This assembly becomes Metroplex's colossal axe "Sparkdrinker" in robot mode, plus has a spot on the shovel to attach Drill Bit in his vehicle mode. Plugging a Cyber Planet Key into the Key jack on Sparkdrinker opens up the wheel to form the axe-head, plus activates an electronic light. Due to him having a similar hand design to Optimus Prime, he can use Optimus's rifle, while Optimus can use his giant Sparkdrinker weapon.
Like his fellow Gigantions Quickmix and Menasor, Metroplex has two different robot modes: a full-sized standard mode and a shorter, sturdier "work" mode.
He comes with his Mini-Con partner Drill Bit and a gold-bordered, Gigantion-style Cyber Planet Key. The Hasbro version has the Key Code "lm74" on the back of the Cyber Planet Key.
The Takara Galaxy Force Megalo Convoy version features some very bright blue paint applications on his shoulders and lower legs where the Hasbro version has dark blue paint. Additionally, he features more dark blue paint on the caterpillar tracks on his feet. Megalo Convoy also came packed with a metallic painted version of Legends Class class Optimus Prime.
Metroplex has a grand total of 14 Mini-Con hardpoints.

Transformers (2007)

Why do Bumblebees make honey? I think it's a bribe so we'll be their friends. I mean, without the delicious, sweet honey, you're left with nothing more than a fat wasp.
  • Bumblebee (Legends Class, 2007)
    • Japanese name: EZ Collection Bumblebee
Legends Bumblebee transforms into a yellow 1976 Chevrolet Camaro. Being a highly simplified toy of a highly complex design, Legends-class Bumblebee does not replicate the appearance of the robot mode very well, and has very limited articulation, detail and paint application. On the other hand, he's pocket-sized and inexpensive, perfect for the younger set. The toy has a sculpted rear window, but it's not painted like the other windows. instead, the racing stripes extend over them.
He was later redecoed into Cliffjumper.

Animated

Me Grimlock lose proportions down back of sofa.
  • Grimlock (Voyager, 2008)
    • Japanese ID number: TA-17
    • Accessories: Flaming sword
Part of the third wave of Animated Voyagers, Grimlock transforms into a robotic tyrannosaurus rex with a spring-loaded chompy-jaw. A mechanized switch in the right robot-mode wrist interacts with a spring-loaded feature in his fiery sword, revealing pop-out flames when the wrist is tilted. Purely by coincidence, a peg on his left leg is the exact right size to serve as a Powerlinx port for any Mini-Con.
The instruction sheet for this toy has an error in step two, in which his mid-back region (with the three hash marks on either side) is shown as both unfolding backwards to form part of his feet and staying where it is. Also, despite a claim on the packaging that Grimlock's sword can be fitted into his beast mode's mouth to simulate breathing fire, this is sadly not possible.
Some Grimlocks have been reported with legs that are impossible to shorten into arms for robot mode. Others contract, but the two halves of the thighs/shoulders start to separate when they do. Others still have no problem. It looks like a quality control issue rather than a running change to fix the problem, as the most recently bought Grimlocks still suffer with this issue.

Universe (2008)

File:Universe2008 Legends AutobotBrawn.jpg
Nigh-invulnerability negates the need for elbows.
  • Brawn (Legends, 2008)
Released in the fourth wave of Universe Legends Class toys, Brawn is a new-sculpt toy of the original Brawn inspired by his character model, transforming into a generic SUV that takes some design cues from a Land Rover Discovery Series II and a Jeep Cherokee XJ with a bullbar mounted on the front. His spare tire, mounted on his back end in vehicle mode, is actually a free-spinning wheel just like the normal four, and the same size as the front wheels... meaning that, in theory, it could be used as an actual spare tire.
Amusingly enough, his robot-mode arms are upside-down inside the packaging, with his shoulders somewhere around hip-level.
Official stock photos depicting a pre-production sample in and out of packaging featured the tires in the same green plastic color as the vehicle shell. They were changed to black plastic for the mass production version.

Revenge of the Fallen

rar im a monstah
  • Dead End or Detour (Scout Class, 2009)
    • Japanese ID number: RD-07
Part of the first wave of Revenge of the Fallen Scout Class toys, Dead End converts from a modified red and black Peugeot 9009 concept car to a robot with a bird-like head vaguely resembling Hawkman's mask/helmet. Interestingly, while Dead End has no neck articulation, he does have a movable jaw; the entire top of his head hinges backward, revealing a lower jaw and teeth. However, added plastic (most likely for safety reasons) makes his chest-plate unable to fold down all the way. As a result, many owners don't even see Dead End's lower jaw, and assume the upper jaw to be the entire head. It is possible to hinge the full head upwards by pulling on the lower jaw's cheek detailing.
Before solid information regarding the name of the Revenge of the Fallen Scout Class toy became available, sellers of stolen prototypes alternatively referred to him as "Dead End"[1] and "Detour"[2]. Eventually the former name won out... but ultimately it turned out the name "Detour" hadn't come out of thin air either: Early shipments of the European release of the toy featured the name "Detour" on the cardboard insert on the packaging's front (the cardback and the instruction sheet still call him "Dead End", however), as did the official in-packaging stock photo of the European version[3]. Later shipments then featured the correct "Dead End" insert instead.[4] At least one sample has even been found at US retail, with a misapplied European "Detour" insert.[5]
This sculpt was also used to make Nightbeat and Slap Dash.
I have died in every story I have appeared in. All were written by Simon Furman. I'm beginning to think he doesn't respect me.
  • Brakedown (Scout Class, 2009)
    • Japanese ID number: RD-23
Part of the fifth wave of Revenge of the Fallen Scout-class figures (and the only new mold among that wave), Brakedown converts from a white sports car (a mish-mash of Lamborghini and Ferrari parts) to a white and blue robot. Like Revenge of the Fallen Runamuck, he homages the Generation 1 Stunticon Breakdown, though now in form, color, and name. He also has a bit of a backpack.
This mold was also used to make the 2010 Transformers series Oil Pan and Generations Dead End.

You guys suck. I'm gonna go hang with Hoist.
  • Knock Out (Scout Class, 2009)
    • Japanese ID number: RA-07
Knock Out is part of the first wave of Revenge of the Fallen Scout Class figures. He transforms into a green racing motorcycle. Similar to Bumblebee, his right hand is morphed in a plasma cannon. The vehicle cowling panels, which become leg kibble in robot mode, are only held in place by pegs and tend to fall off during conversion. His waist does not peg into his torso and becomes dislodged by simply moving his legs (as seen in Hasbro's stock photography on the right).
This mold was also used to make Reverb and Trenchmouth in the same toyline and Backfire in the 2010 Transformers line.

I can't be seen with these loser non-film characters! Do you have any idea about the kind of looks I'd get?
  • Sideswipe (Deluxe, 2009)
    • Japanese ID number: RA-04
Sideswipe transforms into a silver Corvette Stingray concept car. In this mode, he sits so low that it's difficult to roll him without scraping his undercarriage, unless you perform some careful shaping after transforming him. Sideswipe's Mech Alive gimmick is in his knees—bending his legs causes the blue armor plates on his knees to extend. He does have wheels in his feet like his character model, but the toy's feet have been designed in such a way that it can stand alone. Rounding out his robot-mode awesomeness, his hips have an "invisible joint" and moving pistons, while his "blades" are geared to spin out in unison. He is totally awesome.
Sideswipe's instructions aren't clear as to how his torso is supposed to connect with his chest in robot mode. The torso piece has a square peg on top of it and there is a corresponding square hole between the two screws holding the front of his chest together. Getting his torso section in front of his arm struts can be a somewhat snug fit.
This mold was retooled into Revenge of the Fallen Swerve.
During part of 2010, Hasbro did a promotion wherein US fans could receive three free Deluxes in exchange for receipts showing the purchase of $25 or more of select Transformers product. As noted in this thread over at Allspark.com, and later confirmed by this listing here, Sideswipe was one of a pool of eight figures (all from the same wave) from which the free Deluxes were drawn, with several people having noted receiving him.

Transformers (2010)

Me Grimlock can walk on tippy-toes!
Transformers Grimlock is a Toys"R"Us-exclusive redeco of Masterpiece Grimlock with King Grimlock's accessories (also redecoed). His gray is darker, he features additional painted details on his thighs, biceps, and waist to mimic label stickers included on the original 1985 figure, the dark gray painted details on his robot mode toes are now gold, the dinosaur mode's toenails are now coated in a thick gold paint rather than the polished golden look of the TakaraTomy version, and the red paint used on the metal area on his crotch is a lighter shade, matching the adjacent red plastic less.
Grimlock's teeth and claws have been slightly rounded for this release.
All this articulation, and yet I can't see my own toes.
The Hasbro Toys"R"Us-exclusive release of MP-10 Convoy features brighter blue plastic and paint, brighter unpainted non-metallic red plastic, painted yellow lights above the front truck windshields, painted light blue eyes, and lacks silver paint for the trailer's interior. Roller is now blue.
In the Philippines, this was only available as a Toys"R"Us "Limited Edition" figure in the Trinoma mall from August 23–26, with customers having to sign up to reserve their figure. It was limited to 48 units total, and was limited to one per customer.

Power Core Combiners

"I am SKYBURST PRIME, leader of the Au-- what do you mean, 'It's not that kind of Prime'?"
  • Skyburst with Aerialbots (Commander Class, 2010)
    • Accessories: Chopper Drone, Combat Helicopter Drone, Fighter Jet Drone, Recon Plane Drone
Part of the first wave of Power Core Combiners 5-packs, Skyburst is a Scout-size robot that transforms into a stealthy-type-jet of made-up model. He can also transform into a "power-up" robot torso mode, which uses Power Core Combiner drone-vehicles for limbs. He comes with his team of four Aerialbot drones, though he can use drone vehicles from any other set.
This mold was used to make Darkstream and Jetmaster.

Generations

Kids these days. Don't know their Nemesis Primes from thwir Motormasters.
  • Motorbreath (Legends class, 2012)
    • Accessories: Ionizer sword
Generations Legends Class "Motorbreath" (named so for trademark reasons) is a redeco/retool of Transformers: Reveal the Shield Legends Class Optimus Prime. He features new hands and a hole on his head/vehicle roof compatible with 3mm posts, and comes with a compatible sword (sculpted after Generation 1 Motomaster's sword) that features two posts and a hole, allowing it to be held and mounted in different ways. Originally developed by Hasbro Asia for release in their territories, Motorbreath was later released together with various other formerly "Asian-exclusive" toys as a ToysЯUs exclusive in the United States for the 2012 holiday season.
This retooled version of the sculpt (including the sword) was later redecoed for a running change variant of the "Dollar Store"-exclusive version of Optimus Prime, and was also redecoed without the sword as EZ Collection Gum Optimus Prime.

Dark of the Moon

Why would I want arms? I have swords.
  • Rav (Mini-Con, 2011)
Rav is a redeco of Classics Swoop, transforming into a robotic pteranodon. His colors are an homage to Swoop's cartoon appearance. He was only available individually as a shared "exclusive" between online retailers Big Bad Toy Store and Entertainment Earth and "market six" discount/closeout retailers. He was sold individually alongside Triceradon, Dualor and Catilla. His jointing allows him to stand on his hind-feet as well as assume a normal flying position.
A great many samples of Rav have their Powerlinx socket hideously warped to the point of uselessness. Be careful.
This mold was also used to make Reptix, Universe Windrazor, and Generation 1 Strafe.

Prime

Not affiliated with Cobra.
  • Gob 1 / Gob 2 (Arms Micron, 2012)
    • ID number: 4
    • Energon Crystal: AP Shine
Gob transforms from a robot cobra into a hand-held saw-bladed axe-thing weapon. He has multiple 5mm posts and holes as part of the Arms Micron play pattern, allowing him to be combined with other Mini-Cons to form bigger and more ridiculous weapons. He comes in two different colors; "Gob 1" is solid black plastic, "Gob 2" is reddish-purple.
Gob was initially available through Gacha capsule vending machines, first appearing in early June of 2012. Gob 1 came in a clear-teal capsule, while Gob 2 came in a clear-pink capsule. On August 20 of 2012, he was released as part of the Arms Micron Gum series, though only "Gob 2" was part of this assortment.

Cyberverse (Series 2)

File:Primetoy-HyperspeedWheeljack.jpg
Comes with Mountain Dew cannon.
  • Hyperspeed Wheeljack (Cyberverse Legion, 2012)
    • Series/number: 2 / 010
    • Accessories: "Gravimetric blaster"
Part of the third wave of Cyberverse Legion Class toys, this version of Wheeljack is a single-carded release of the figure previously available with the Star Hammer vehicle, redecoed as an homage to the "Marlboor" Diaclone pre-Transformers retool of the Generation 1 Wheeljack sculpt. He comes with a "gravimetric blaster" which, in varying colors, was also used by Cyberverse Bumblebee, Arcee, Evac, Autobot Tailgate and the redeco of Bumblebee that comes with the Bumblebee Battle Suit.

Cyberverse (Series 3)

Na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na BATWAVE
  • Soundwave (Legion, 2013)
    • Series / Number: 3 / 005
    • Accessories: Sonic Saw
Part of the second wave of Prime: Beast Hunters Series 3 Cyberverse Legion Class toys, Soundwave is a smaller-scale toy. He comes with a "Sonic Saw" rifle with a chainsaw bayonet, and the weapon features four 3mm posts and two ports, allowing it to peg onto any of the ports on Soundwave's hands, forearms/wings, and back/fuselage. This weapon, in varying colors, was also used by Hun-Gurrr, Smokescreen, and the Air Vehicon.
Although the paint operations for the head and the "collar" are mostly show-accurate, the fact that the black paint operations also include the mouthplate (which is silver on the animation model), combined with the purple paint operations on each side of the mouthplate, makes it look as if Soundwave had a huge black head with two purple eyes.
I'll catch those robbers with my JUSTICE HAMMER!
  • Prowl (Cyberverse Legion, 2013)
    • Series / Number: 3 / 006
    • Accessories: Justice Hammer, lightbar
Part of the second wave of Prime: Beast Hunters Series 3 Cyberverse Legion Class toys, Prowl is a redeco of Legion Class Smokescreen, transforming into a police car loosely based on a McLaren MP4-12C. He comes with the "Justice Hammer", which is adorned with two 3mm posts and two holes, and can mount onto ports on Prowl's hands, and onto the sides of his vehicle rear/robot feet. He also comes with a lightbar pegged onto his roof/back, which can be removed to reveal another 3mm mounting point.
This mold, without the lightbar, was also used to make Bluestreak. The hammer, in various colors, was also used by Twinstrike, Blight, and Rot Gut.
Huffer's back, and he's tired of pulling Prime's trailer for him.
  • Huffer (Cyberverse Commander, 2013)
    • Series / Number: 3 / 009
    • Accessories: Roadshark Missile Launcher, missile
Part of the fourth wave of Prime: Beast Hunters Series 3 Cyberverse Commander Class toys, Huffer is a redeco of Trailcutter, who is a retool of Series 2 Commander Class Ironhide. Transforming into a heavily-armored SUV with hood-mounted blasters (that end up on his shoulders in robot mode), he comes with a "Roadshark Missile Launcher" with a pressure-fired missile. The launcher can mount via 3mm post onto his hood, trunk, doors/forearms, and hands.

I belieeeeeeve I can flyyyyyyyyyy/I belieeeeeeve I can touch the skyyyyyyyyyy
  • Air Vehicon (Cyberverse Legion, 2013)
    • Series / Number: 3 / 011
    • Accessories: Hooksaw Cannon
Part of the fourth wave of Prime: Beast Hunters Series 3 Cyberverse Legion Class toys, the Air Vehicon is an all-new mold, and transforms into a "hoverjet" as seen on the show. He comes with a Hooksaw Cannon which can peg and be pegged via its three 3mm posts and two ports, allowing it to mount onto his hands, wrists, and the tops of his wings.
The cannon, in various colors, was also used by Smokescreen, Soundwave, Hun-Gurrr, and Bluestreak.

"Brains..."
"Flesh..."
"Candyfloss..."

  • Abominus (Giftset, 2013)
    • Accessories: Dragontooth Saw, Tornado Bow, Electrocharge Bow, Piston Hammer, Affliction Hammer
Part of the Beast Hunters: Predacons Rising subline imprint, Abominus is a giftset of Cyberverse Hun-Gurrr, Windrazor, Predacon Rippersnapper, Twinstrike, and Blight, slightly redecoed by way of translucent plastic replacing a main color of each character, as well as translucent purple weapons.
The back of the packaging mistakenly switches their names, resulting in Hun-Gurr getting Twinstrike's name, Windrazor getting Hun-Gurrr's, Rippersnapper getting Windrazor's, and Twinstrike being called "Predacon Rippersnapper". Guess Blight got lucky.
This set is a Target exclusive in the United States and Canada, and a Tesco exclusive in the United Kingdom.
