"Brace yourselves. Winter is coming."

Transformers: Age of Extinction is the fourth film in the live-action film series. It was released on June 27, 2014.

Following the Battle of Chicago, humanity has come to fear both Autobots and Decepticons alike. With the aid of a Transformer mercenary named Lockdown, a CIA task-force operated by Harold Attinger begins hunting the remaining Transformers on Earth. Hunted by enemies that were once his allies, Optimus Prime sends his forces into hiding. Now, four years later, struggling inventor and single-father Cade Yeager discovers a damaged Transformer, placing both himself and his daughter on a collision course with events that threaten the extinction of humankind itself.

Synopsis

"Brace yourselves. Robotic hell is coming."

65 million years ago, on the planet Earth, during the Cretaceous Period, a Psittacosaurus is out hunting for food. Finding a fish, the small dinosaur starts to feed, but stops as hundreds of alien ships enter Earth's atmosphere, with mysterious aliens laying down bombs all over the surface. These alien ships are commanded by "The Creators". The alien ships begin launching bombs called "Seeds". Detonating them, they turn most of the Earth's surface and much of its organic life into a metallic element. Barely escaping, the Psittacosaurus walks through the fields of metallic dinosaur corpses. The Age of the Dinosaurs is over.

"Knew I shouldn't have signed that Sacrificial Lion clause in the contract!"

Four years after the invasion of Chicago, tensions between humans and Cybertronians have risen dramatically. The government of the United States has terminated all human-Autobot joint operations and deemed every Autobot a wanted fugitive. Harold Attinger heads a black-ops military unit known as Cemetery Wind, which aims to hunt down and kill all Transformers, regardless of faction. On one such mission aboard an abandoned boat, the team pinpoint another Transformer in hiding, who turns out to be Ratchet. Initially he tries to run, but when he is forced to transform, he tries to reason with the CIA operatives. James Savoy, who leads the field operations and reports to the paranoid Harold Attinger, dismisses Ratchet's pleas. Then, a cannon emerges from the swamp, firing off a few rounds, knocking Ratchet down, and destroying his leg. It's revealed to be Lockdown, who demands to know Optimus Prime's whereabouts. Ratchet's defiance earns him a hook through the chest, killing him.

In Texas, struggling inventor Cade Yeager and his friend/employee Lucas Flannery meet at an old theater, looking for parts/salvage. He finds an old truck, and upon inspection, it seems to have artillery shells inside it. He buys the truck along with the other theater equipment and puts it in his garage. Tessa, Cade's daughter, observes this while video-chatting with her boyfriend and flips out on her dad for buying the heap of junk.

"*Gasp* It's not mint in box!"

Later on, Cade discovers a giant hole on the radiator while taking the truck apart. After calling Lucas and Tessa, he connects jumper cables to its engine...only for it to promptly declare "Calling all Autobots...". They realize it's a Transformer right before Optimus Prime transforms and roars in a fit of rage while waving his shotgun. Lucas gets injured in the head by the swinging shotgun. Outside, Lucas advocates calling the cops, claiming that there is a huge reward for Transformers. Cade talks to Optimus. Seeing the damaged condition the Autobot leader is in, Cade decides to repair him. Cade sends Lucas to buy the parts that will enable him to fix Optimus.

Shortly after, however, a strike team led by Savoy and commanded by Attinger approaches the farm, having been tipped off to Prime's location by Lucas. Agents swarm the barn...but there is no trace of Prime inside. As Savoy presses a gun to Tessa's head and Cade swears that he doesn't know where Prime is, said Cybertronian explodes out of the floor of the barn-he was hiding in the basement under the barn. Optimus escapes, still being chased by Cemetery Wind. As Cade catches a mini-drone used by Cemetery Wind and the Yeager residence explodes, a white rally car zooms over the adjacent fields and picks up the Yeagers and Lucas. The driver is revealed to be Shane, Tessa's boyfriend and rally car racer.

Lockdown arrives to chase Optimus. Prime, as well as the Yeagers, Shane, and Lucas, is chased into an abandoned factory. While Optimus fights Lockdown, Shane uses his driving skills to good use and dispatches most of Cemetery Wind. However, the stunt driving has broken the car's axle. They pile into Optimus and flee, but Lucas is caught in the radius of Lockdown's grenade and is turned into metal, frozen in midstride.

Arriving at a very dilapidated gas station, Optimus orders the humans out and drives off to ensure that they have not been followed. Cade and Shane converse. Tessa gets angry at Cade again for putting them all in danger.

The next day Optimus and the humans set off towards Monument Valley but stop at a small ATM on the way. Cade tries to use the mini-drone to make a transaction out of his account. This fails, of course, and has the unfortunate side effect of alerting the feds to their location. A group of police cars descend on the scene but the entourage has already left. Prime scans a passing truck, sheds his layer of rust and takes on a new form with his old paint scheme. They arrive in Monument Valley where they meet other Autobot refugees in the form of Crosshairs, Hound, Drift, and Bumblebee. Crosshairs and Hound start threatening the humans for having their species betray them. Later, Optimus convinces them that they have risked their lives to save his. During nightime, Optimus asks if the are any other Autobots that are still hiding. Later, Cade reveals footage of Ratchet and Leadfoot's demise using the stolen aerial drone. Hound then takes off his hat for respect for his fallen friend while Prime declares that he will kill the one responsible for hunting down the Autobots.

Inspection of the drone leads them to a company named KSI, located in Chicago. It is run by Joshua Joyce, who is working with Su Yueming and Attinger to create artificial Transformers to eventually be used in the military. Using the remains of Megatron, Sentinel Prime, and the countless Decepticons from the Chicago battle, they have synthesized a matter called 'Transformium', which, when given commands through a computer, can 'transform' into various shapes or objects. Although a drone called Stinger (designed after Bumblebee) is active, Joshua's major project is a bigger, stronger drone called Galvatron. However, his attempts have not been successful-the drone keeps resembling Megatron instead of the more friendlier image of Optimus Prime. Bumblebee builds Cade and Shane faux-ID badges which the duo use to infiltrate KSI. Cade goes further in and projects imagery of Ratchet's severed head being melted down for Transformium and the captured Brains, currently missing a leg. This sends Prime into a rage, prompting him to declare that he's "gonna tear them apart". Meanwhile, Shane tries to restrain Bumblebee from demolishing a Stinger prototype after a promotional video repeatedly calls him inferior to the man-made drone. He has only partial success, but both human and Autobot manage to avoid detection.

However, Cade is caught by his ID badge being used twice (by him and its original owner). He is taken to the upper floors and is confronted by Attinger, who claims that what he has witnessed is for world peace. He also asks him about the whereabouts of Optimus Prime. Cade maintains his silence.

Furious over how the humans have mutilated their comrade(s), Optimus orders an attack on KSI. Bumblebee, carried upstairs by Drift in copter mode, rescues Cade. The others trash the lab, free Brains, and confront Joshua, only for him to openly declare that what is being done is being done to prevent more Transformer-caused damage and that the humans "don't need" the Autobots. Disheartened, Prime orders a retreat.

As the Autobots exit the factory and leave, Attinger catches up with Joshua and claims that the Autobots have declared war on the humans by smashing into the facility. He coerces Joyce to use the two functional drones to take down the Autobots. Galvatron and Stinger activate and pursue their quarry across a highway. The Autobots evade Galvatron's and Stinger's missiles but are deterred when the drones transform and attack. Bumblebee fires upon Galvatron but is surprised to see him simply disintegrate and reintegrate again. Galvatron attacks Prime, who tries to stab the robot in the 'spark chamber' but finds none. The artificial robot still functions, and when Prime is surprised about its lack of a spark, it snarls back "That is why I have no FEAR!"

As Tessa scrambles for cover in a nearby vehicle, Prime is suddenly shot from the back and falls-Lockdown has arrived, along with his ship! The bounty hunter orders a net dropped over Optimus, pulling both the Autobot leader and the vehicle Tessa sought refuge in. Cade desperately clings to the net but his strength gives out and he falls to the fields below. As the spaceship departs, Cade and Shane vow to get Tessa back.

Lockdown throws Prime in a cage and orders his lackeys to "throw the human in the trash". Prime takes note of several other aliens in similar cages. He also discovers the original purpose of the mercenary ship- it was supposed to be used by a group of legendary Knights (presumably including Prime himself) but now acts as Lockdown's flying prison. As the vessel flies over Chicago, Attinger is informed of Prime's capture and arranges with Savoy to meet aboard the spaceship. He also discourages several government agencies from opening fire, claiming that he has "an asset" on the ship.

Cade, Shane, and the other Autobots clamber on the ship as it flies low over a bridge. Cade and Shane find Tessa, who has seen Attinger and Savoy receive "the Seed" from Lockdown. However, Tessa completely ignores her father the moment they reconcile and proceeds to cling to Shane, calling him her savior. Cade, throughly ridiculed and at a loss for words, can only roll his eyes. The inventor and Shane also find a strange armory, from which Cade takes a sword that opens up to form a gun (referred as "alien gun").

Crosshairs deploys the ship's mooring cables as a method of distraction, causing them to attach to the Willis Tower and preventing the ship from going into warp. This allows the humans to climb down to the tower with Bumblebee's help. Crosshairs appears again, this time in a gunship, and instructs the humans to come aboard. Lockdown's own ships soon give chase.

Lockdown has detached the mooring cables and prepare to warp once again. However,Prime reveals that the section they are in is actually a separate ship. With Hound controlling the ship, they separate from the main ship just as it warps away.

Back at KSI, it is decided that all equipment is to be moved to the Beijing facility to continue operations. Joshua is also none too pleased about the previous field test of Galvatron-not only was it lost on several fronts, but the drone also spoke, which was something it was not programmed to do!

The Autobots regroup at a train yard and Optimus claims that he felt the presence of Megatron during his fight with Galvatron. Brains seconds this, as he was forced to decipher the functionality in Megatron's brain, which helped the humans build Galvatron's body (and explains why Joshua could not get Galvatron to resemble Optimus). The tiny bot further mentions how Galvatron used his knowledge to build Stinger and the other drones, with plans to make them tor into his personal army.

As Tessa elaborates about the Seed she saw, Optimus explains how the Creators used the Seed(s) to wipe out entire species and harvest metal produced- Transformium.

Drift intercepts a communications message which says Joyce will be going to the Beijing facility. Hearing this, Cade makes a call to Joyce and relays the newfound data about Galvatron. Knowing that Joyce is also an inventor with a heart, he pleads with Joyce to shut down Galvatron before things escalate. Although Joyce puts up an unconvinced face, he calls for increased security around Galvatron right after the call.

As police cars surround the train yard the Autobots board the shuttle again and take to the air. Optimus says that though the Autobots will travel to Hong Kong and get the Seed back, they are done protecting humanity after that. Cade disagrees but Prime is non-responsive.

In deep space, Lockdown finally discovers the absence of the smaller ship. He grumbles about Optimus Prime taking his trophy case and how the Prime will feel his wrath.

Joyce meets with Attinger and Savoy and receives the Seed. Joyce intends to detonate it in a region of the Mongolian Desert, which will generate enough Transformium to last a century. Attinger is all about ramping up production but grows incensed when Joshua disagrees and says that they should go slower, quite obviously moved from Cade's call.

Meanwhile, Galvatron activates on his own and starts to infect the legion of (more than fifty) KSI Transformers, including Stinger, Junkheap, a collection of differently colored Traxes, and some Two-headed Shockwaves. When the alarm rings regarding Galvatron's escape, Joyce has Attinger and Savoy evacuated out the building and gets in a car with Yueming, an associate named Darcy, and the Seed.

As the trio drive away, they realize the need for a place to hide the Seed. Yueming instructs them to head to Hong Kong-they can enlist the help of the local armed forces there. As the sun rises, Darcy drives off to create a diversion while Joshua and Yueming try to get the Seed out of the city. Joyce texts his team of scientists (who are playing with some Transformium, using it to create a Rainbow Dash doll and a machine gun successively) and is told that it has the range of a thermo-nuclear device!

As Joyce seeks refuge on a rooftop (and grabs a nearby soybean drink), the Autobot-piloted ship arrives and attempts to pick him and the Seed up. However. Galvatron and his drones have arrived and a Trax shoots down the airborne vessel with its rockets, causing Bumblebee, Hound, and the Yeagers to spill out of the cargo hold and the others (Prime, Crosshairs, Drift, and the captured Knights) to careen away into a mountainside.

Hound and Bumblebee attempt to escort the Humans and the Seed out of the city, but are cut short when Joshua points out that the KSI-built Transformers were specifically built to hunt and destroy any Autobots or Decepticons left on Earth- this prompts Prime to return into the ship and activate the armory as well as release the other captives within the ship. As Hound and Bumblebee hold the line and protect the Humans, Optimus tries to convince the Legendary Warriors to fight alongside them. Their apparent leader declines at first, fighting the Prime in both his massive robot mode and his Tyrannosaurus mode. Optimus quickly defeats him, saying that he and other warriors will protect his family or die, then mounts the metal dinosaur. After a heroic speech, Crosshairs comments that one would want to die for Optimus, saying he shows great leadership...or brainwashing. Drift replies that this is just how Optimus Prime gains respect. The Autobots mount their Dinobots and charge over the mountains into Hong Kong.

Meanwhile, Hound is running out of ammunition and is growing desperate, even going so far as to us his own helmet to knock out one of his synthetic enemies. Just as he runs out, Optimus and his fellow Autobots storm into the city, slamming, crushing, stomping and chomping on all nearby enemies. Galvatron, no where near any of this, yells out that Prime and his allies are ruining everything. With this battle over, Prime turns his attention to Joyce. He says that Joyce will be responsible for the extinction of humanity. The T-Rex roars at the already frightened Joyce before Optimus gives the order to defend the humans and escort them away from the city.

On the way, the Seed activates a homing beacon, which Lockdown is closing in on. He activates a massive magnet, wreaking havoc on Hong Kong. Everything metal from kitchen ware to massive ships is picked up by the magnet, not even the Autbots or the Warriors are safe. After narrowly avoiding the magnet, the Yeagers are separated from the Autobots, who are being sucked up into Lockdown's ship by the same magnet. With a scream, Optimus shoots at the magnet, destroying it. The ship retreats to a nearby factory, with Optimus hot on it's trail. Cade tells his daughter to stay with Shane, as he wishes to fight alongside Optimus against Lockdown. As Optimus faces Lockdown, however, Attinger corners Yeager with a pistol, commenting on how he has chosen aliens over his country, but is quickly shot and killed by Optimus. Cade replies to the corpse that he'd make the same choice any time.

Lockdown gains the upper hand, using Prime's own sword to pin him to a concrete pillar, stabbing him through the chest. Lockdown makes a brief speech eerily similar to Attinger's before Cade starts shooting at him. Meanwhile, Tessa convinces Bumblebee to turn around and fight Lockdown, allowing Shane to use a tow truck to unpin Prime. Just as Lockdown is about to perform a killing blow on Cade, Optimus jumps up and slices the Bounty Hunter in half! Activating one of Lockdown's grenades Prime tells the humans to hold on and blasts off while the grenade detonates and decimate Galvatron's forces.

Reflecting on the danger he will bring to the Earth if he stays (due to the bounty on his head), Prime blasts off into space with the seed to confront the creators, but not before ordering the Autobots to protect the Yeager family. Meanwhile, Galvatron watches Prime blast off and warns him to look out, for he is reborn...

Main cast

Continuity errors

  • After the Autobots infiltrate KSI Technologies, they liberate Brains from the "Frankenstein box". Afterwards, he is absent for the entire sequence aboard Lockdown's ship only to reappear after the Autobot's meet back up with Bumblebee and the Yeagers.
  • Ironhide is seen on the cards Attinger pulls out early in the film, listed as deceased and having been last seen in Chicago. However, Ironhide was killed by Sentinel Prime in Washington, D.C., midway through Dark of the Moon.
  • Scenes from the Decepticons' invasion of Chicago in Dark of the Moon are shown as archival footage presented by Attinger. While it is conceivable some lucky people with cameras recorded the initial attack and managed to survive and publish their footage, it's highly unlikely people would've been able to get close-up video footage of the NEST team taking down Barricade and the other Decepticons. In an outside-world context, these scenes are simply used as stock footage to help serve as exposition for the audience.
  • When Drift first appears in the movie, he is initially seen driving down a desert road in his Bugatti altmode with Crosshairs, and then after the film cuts to showing Hound scaling one of the desert's giant rock formations, it cuts back to Drift... who is suddenly by himself in robot mode and on top of another rock formation; one that is far enough away from the road that he has to fly back to it in his helicopter altmode to reach it. Did he teleport between cuts or something?
    • And since there appears to be just one road in this whole scene, could he not have just stayed on the same road with Crosshairs to rendezvous with Optimus more quickly?

Technical/animation errors

  • While the human characters are climbing across the anchor cables to the high-rise building some of the Steeljaws begins to climb out after them. Cade tells his daughter not to look back and see them, but when we cut back to her, with a clear view of the cables behind her, the Steeljaws are not visible for this moment.
  • When Joshua is in the lab showing Darcy Transformium, in two different shots, a white, uncolored prop of Ratchet's head can be seen in the next room.
  • The cyberformed remains of a Tyrannosaurus and a Spinosaurus appear frozen together in the arctic at the beginning of the film. This is rather odd considering the two are found in different continents (North America and Africa respectively) and separated by around 35 million years of evolution.
  • All the dinosaurs seen in the beginning scene existed in the same exact time and place (Central Asia, around 75 million years ago) which is rare for films to be this accurate. However, the juxtaposition of the scene seems to suggest this was at the end of the age of the dinosaurs, which was 65 million years ago.
