Chōkon Power

So much power you're likely to chōkon it.

The mysterious Chōkon Power (超魂パワー, "Super Soul Power"), or Ten-Chi-Jin (天地人), is the supernatural energy of life, the universe, and everything. It is an abstract force that exists inherently within most forms of natural life, from stars and planets down to humans and animals, who can—with the proper training and technology—harness it to for a variety of effects. Transformers do not seem to naturally possess any Chōkon Power, but they too can learn to draw on it from its sources with time and study. The most famous wielders of Chōkon Power are the Godmasters, lifeforms who are a fusion of Transformer and human, created through the machinations of the Decepticon god Devil Z.

At a basic level, Chōkon Power grants its wielders inceased strength, speed, and reflexes, but can be employed to achieve a variety of effects, including energy projection, rapid healing, manipulation of the elements, and more.

Types of Chōkon Power

[edit]

As introduced in Super-God Masterforce, Chōkon Power is described as manifesting in three forms, which together make up the planet Earth:

  • Tenchōkon (天超魂, "Heaven Super Soul") — the power of the heavens. The Decepticon Pretender Blood classifies it as "the ultimate energy of the growing universe".
  • Chichōkon (地超魂, "Earth Super Soul") — the power of the Earth. Blood characterizes it as "the ultimate energy that grants existence to the life on the surface of the Earth".
  • Jinchōkon (人超魂, "Human Super Soul") — the power of humanity. Blood describes it as "the ultimate energy that gives humans the strength to keep on living".

These three different aspects—"Heaven," "Earth," and "Man"—are the three fundamental principles of existence according to various Eastern philosophies. Later retcons by the Legends manga would connect these rather abstract ideas to other unearthly energies found in Japanese Transformers lore, which earlier stories had established to be hidden within the Earth since ancient times. Tenchōkon was the Zodiac, the energy that birthed the universe in the Big Bang, while Chichōkon was Angolmois Energy, the divine lifeforce of the Earth itself (though, see "Notes" below).

Breaking out of the ancient philosophical confines of the idea, additional retcons would also establish at least three other forms of Chōkon Power:

  • Machōkon (魔超魂, "Devil Super Soul"), a corrupt form utilized by Devil Z itself.
  • Jūchōkon (獣超魂, "Beast Super Soul"), the power of beasts.
  • Shinchōkon (神超魂, "God Super Soul"), a form native to the Legends World that can make thoughts into reality and resurrect the dead.

Super-God Masterforce cartoon

[edit]

The evil energy being Devil Z desired to create a lifeform that could control all three forms of Chōkon Power. To this end, he stole a batch of Transtectors from G Nebula 89, and brought them to Earth, scattering them across the planet. The Transtectors lay hidden on Earth for millennia, absborbing the planet's unique energies, while Devil Z hibernated at the bottom of the ocean. Shūta and Grand's Masterforce Super-Secrets! In the year 2020, Devil Z awoke and began recruiting humans to bond with the Transtectors, thereby creating the Godmasters, beings in whom all three aspects of Chōkon Power were united. His first servants were Giga and Mega, who then found and trained Hydra and Buster in the use of Chōkon Power at their island base. Super Warriors - The Godmaster Brothers

Decepticon Pretender Blood explained the three of Chōkon Power to the Decepticon Headmaster Juniors, detailing how creating an imbalance in the forces on Earth would drive mankind to extinction and the stolen power would go to the Decepticons to use in conquering the universe. The Headmaster Juniors were specifically implored to decrease Jinchōkon by draining people of hope and luring them into becoming Decepticon minions. Go, Goshooter - Showdown in the Wasteland

The Pretenders and Juniors were formally introduced to the real-life applications of Chōkon when Giga and Mega lured them into a battle with Hydra and Buster at their base, which illustrated the superiority of the Godmasters. As a further demonstration, Hydra and Buster used their transtectors to create the "Chōjin Godmaster Chōkon Bomb" that destroyed an entire squadron of United States Air Force jets. The two Godmasters later fought the Autobots, Super Warriors - The Godmaster Brothers and when reviewing video footage of the battle, the Autobots discovered that the Godmasters had immense regenerative powers.

My burning heart burns for justice.

At the Decepticon Base, Giga once again went over how Godmasters utilized Chōkon—through the combination of the Godmaster's soul with the transtector were they able to tap into all of Ten-Chi-Jin, granting them limitless power beyond that of gods. The Headmaster Juniors were also noted for their human factor. Mega reassured the Pretenders that, despite their lack of Jinchōkon, they would still be useful.

The Autobots once again battled the Decepticon Godmasters, this time on Viscas Island. This time, the Godmasters called upon Chōkon Power, overwhelming the Autobot Pretenders. However, they did not feel like they could combat the Autobots once the Headmaster Juniors arrived to assist and the tide turned against them. At the Decepticon Base, Buster suffered from low self-esteem after being unable to utilize his Chōkon Power to comparison to his brother due to the "weakness in [his] heart". Buster declared that he would become stronger, to which Hydra looked forward. A Fierce Battle!! The Autobots Are in Trouble The brothers would soon show their power to Diver when they battled over the newly discovered Godmaster—Ginrai. In response to Diver's claims about taking Earth as a new home and becoming closer to humanity, Hydra boasted of his superiority over humanity thanks to the Chōkon energies, both showing off Chichōkon and Tenchōkon in turn. Diver, however, disagree with them surpassing humans as all they had was power and no heart. Ginrai came to the rescue when he accidentally combined with his transtector and harnessed the power of Chichōkon sending a bemused Hydra and Buster flying away. A Hero Is Chosen - His Name Is Ginrai

(Burning.)

In following battles, Godmasters on both sides would call upon Chōkon Power for their attacks:

For a while, it seemed as if Godmasters had a monopoly on Chōkon. That is, till the powerful robotic Transformer Sixknight arrived on Earth seeking out a challenge. He brought himself before the Decepticons and bragged of his powerful Tenchōkon. Mega and Giga, already having minions that possessed more than just Tenchōkon, laughed at his inability to tap into Chichōkon or Jinchōkon. Even still, the Decepticons convinced Sixknight to battle Ginrai. Sixknight initially had a good showing against the Godmaster, but was ultimately defeated by the Special Fire Guts cannon blast that combined all three Chōkon types. A Powerful Foe!! Sixknight the Wanderer

The Autobots and Decepticons went right back to battling each other:

  • Ginrai, Lightfoot, Ranger, and Road King all used their unique Chōkon attacks, based on the classical elements, on Seacons. Save the Little Girl! The Chōjin Warriors, the Godmasters
  • Buster attempted to use Tenchōkon, but was restrained before he could complete his attack. Life? Death? The Desperate Lightfoot
  • Ginrai used a blast of Chichōkon to overwhelm Hydra and Buster in their Darkwings form. Mega then used her Chōkon abilities to levitate a large meteorite to attack Ginrai. Expose the Decepticons' Dark Trap!
  • Ginrai used Chōkon Power to send Hydra and Buster blasting off. When they returned as Darkwings, Ginrai used Special Fire Guts. Overlord soon arrived and used his Chōkon Bolt Masher missiles on Ginrai, which helped in the curb-stomping of Ginrai. Super Ginrai Gets Blown Away in the Desert!?
  • By the Moon, Overlord used his Chōkon Bolt Masher and Chōkon Daemon Blast attacks, which had little effect on God Ginrai. Once on the Moon, God Ginrai attempted to focus Chōkon energy into his Godcannon, but was interrupted by BlackZarak. God Ginrai - Into the Sky!!
  • God Ginrai used Chōkon to escape a deadly shot from the Gigatank. When the Autobot Headmaster Juniors rushed to Ginrai's defense, Hydra used Chōkon to create a sand barrier between the Godmaster brothers and the Autobots. Overlord would use his abilities to create a powerful Chōkon tornado that enveloped the Decepticon Godmaster, but it was dissipated by God Ginrai's Godpunch striking Overlord from underground. Overlord - Terror of the Chōkon Tornado
  • Lightfoot used his Chōkon Spin Drill to loosen King Poseidon's hold on God Ginrai before the Decepticon could throw him into an underwater volcano. God Ginrai then used Chōkon to boost his Godcannon to blow King Poseidon apart. Escape!! The Underwater Volcano Erupts
  • Buster attempted to use Chōkon on Godbomber, but failed to hit the robot. God Ginrai used Chichōkon to blast Overlord away. Destroy Godbomber!!

Ginrai's personal Chōkon Power was used to energize Godbomber. When Ginrai was weak, Godbomber was incapable of moving till the Headmaster Juniors discovered that they could supply their own Chōkon to power Godbomber. Destroy Godbomber!!

  • The final Godmaster, Doubleclouder, used Chōkon to allow him to fly in eagle mode without King Poseidon dragging him down to the ocean. Ginrai used Chōkon God Fire Guts to destroy a mountain to cover the nearby base mode Overlord in rubble. Appearance!! The Final Godmaster
  • Doubleclouder used Chōkon bolts to attack Metalhawk after the Godmaster was caught conspiring with the Decepticons. Secret Orders! Destroy the Autobot Base!!
  • While distracting Ginrai from the attack on Autobot Base, Hydra and Buster combined their powers together for the "Chōkon Scramble Attack". Secret Orders! Destroy the Autobot Base!! Afterwards, Hydra stunned Ginrai temporarily with Chōkon Power, but the battle ended when Ginrai shot down Darkwings with Tenchōkon. In the following battle between Overlord and Ginrai, Overlord used Chōkon Bolt Masher while Ginrai energized himself with Chōkon to throw Overlord into the exploding Autobot Base. Disaster! The Autobot Base Explodes
  • During Operation M1, Overlord frequently used his Chōkon Bolt Masher. While trapped in a black hole, Ginrai and Grand Maximus combined their Chōkon, drawn from the electromagnetic energies in the black hole, to power the Godcannon to dissipate the black hole. Once the two Autobots arrived on earth, BlackZarak and Overlord attempted Chōkon attacks, only to hit each other. The two villains were then struck by a Godcannon shot. BlackZarak - Destroyer from Space
Definitely lots of burning.

Realizing the power of Jinchōkon and humanity's refusal to be predictable, Devil Z became afraid of the species, providing more impetus in crushing the Earth under his heel. To this extent, he first sought to conquer the Earth in Operation M1. When that failed due to the power of Ginrai, Devil Z began Operation M2, which was intended to destroy all of humanity except for the Godmasters and Headmaster Juniors under his control. Operation M2 also failed, thanks to the immense Chōkon of Ginrai. Crisis! The Day of Human Extinction The continuing success of Ginrai did nothing to improve Devil Z's opinion of humanity. His feeling would soon be shared by Buster and Hydra, who asked the alien to convert them into fully robotic lifeforms. Devil Z complied to their request, granting them Devil Power to replace the lost Jinchōkon and then some, making them stronger than ever. The brothers would test their Devil Power against Ginrai in a close battle, but the human was all too happy to show them his Chōkon was a match even for their new abilities by striking them with his Fire Guts attack. Battle to the Death!! God Ginrai VS Darkwings Reborn

Giga, however, disagreed with his comrades' opinion on humanity and sought to prove it himself by only attacking God Ginrai physically. His demonstration of the power of humanity was ignored as Devil Z, now in BlackZarak, ordered a retreat. Autobots! Desperate Attack!! Buster and Hydra would attempt one last battle with Ginrai, but their quick flight gave Ginrai the idea to use his Chōkon to increase his flight speed, allowing him to overtake Darkwings.

To destroy humanity, Devil Z unleashed his Devil Power upon the world, Malevolent and Inhuman! The True Form of Devil Z even creating a Devil Thunder amplifier to allow him to kill all of the humans on Earth. His plots and machinations were finally stopped when Ginrai and the Headmaster Juniors combined their Chōkon into the Final Fire Guts attack to destroy the Decepticon emperor. With Devil Z's death, the Godmasters and Headmaster Juniors were permanently separated from their transtectors, who had become sapient beings. With this, the existence of beings that could combine all types of Chōkon had come to an end. A Battle... and Then...

Legends comic

[edit]

Having gained a new transtector, Super Ginrai used the three forms of Chōkon Power to battle Weirdwolf, Skullcruncher, and Mindwipe in the Legends World. There he also discovered the existence of Jūchōkon when he used Getmaster technology to draw power from Rattrap. LG35 Super Ginrai Leo Prime explained that Jūchōkon, also known as Beast Power, existed within all beast-type Transformers in the Beast Era. LG41 Leo Prime

The Legends World was also home to a mysterious "spirit energy" that its creators, the Zamojin, were experimenting with. This energy was generated from the dreams and wishes of its inhabitants, and the Zamojin would absorb it to grow stronger. LG-18 Armada Starscream Super Mode Prologue 2 The inhabitants could occasionally use the energy themselves to make their wishes come true, though this ability could also manifest involuntarily in the form of Transformers sickness. LG12 Windblade The spirit energy would also let dead Transformers who had died in other world manifest in the Legends World as ghosts. LG18 Armada Starscream Super Mode Giga would eventually identify the energy as Shinchōkon, LG50 Sixshot which he and Mega then learned to manipulate. During a rematch with Ginrai, the two used Shinchōkon to create a second Overlord transtector out of thin air, power a missile barrage named the "Shinchōkon Dis-Relive", and combine the two Overlords into the mighty Overlord Tera. Ginrai also learned to control the energy, combining it with Jūchōkon and powering up into "Double Chōkon Fire Guts" form he used to defeat the Overlords. LG60 Overlord

Devil Z's Devil Power was Machōkon (魔超魂, "Devil Super Soul"). The dark science used by the Chaos Trinity was a form of Machōkon and Direwolf was another acknowledged user. Ask Vector Prime, 20 July 2015

Notes

[edit]
  • In the Car Robots cartoon, Brave Maximus was capable of responding to and harnessing a power manifested by the sincere emotions of humans with pure and righteous hearts (namely children). The exact nature of this power was never explained, but in concept it bears a striking resemblance to Jinchōkon. And with the belated confirmation of Car Robots being set in the same Japanese Generation 1 cartoon continuity as Super-God Masterforce, it's a very good possibility that this "power of pure-hearted humans" is a form of Jinchōkon.
  • The notion of Tenchōkon being the Zodiac and Chichōkon being Angolmois Energy was declared in the 2018 Legends comic that came packaged with the Legends Grand Maximus toy. While the former is understandable, the latter may initially seem a little odd in light of the fact that Angolmois Energy is best known as a substance innately affiliated with Unicron. When it was first introduced in Beast Wars II, Angolmois Energy was presented as the life energy of Planet Gaia (a post-apocalyptic version of Earth in the far future). It being the lifeforce of Unicron was a later retcon made by Beast Wars Neo. The additional retcon of it also being Chichōkon was, evidently, a reference to the energy's original status as the Earth's lifeforce. Furthermore, the 2019 Generations Selects Special Comic would further retcon Angolmois Energy to have originated as Primus's energy, which had been corrupted by Primacron into an evil variant upon creating Unicron. While this makes the Chichōkon retcon even more puzzling, a seeming answer to this can, in fact, be found in the Legends epilogue published only three months after the Grand Maximus comic. In said epilogue, the Angolmois Energy of Earth was stated to exist within another substance called Gaia Energy, a substance that was first mentioned in the thirtieth episode of Car Robots and conflated with Angolmois Energy by Kiss Players. The Legends epilogue distinguishing the two as different energies would suggest that, when the Angolmois Energy was sealed within the Earth (by Primus during Kiss Players), it was mixed into the Earth's Gaia Energy, essentially making Gaia Energy (rather than Angolmois Energy) the specific substance that is the Earth's energy and therefore also Chichōkon. Although, in the 2022 End of G1 Universe manga, Angolmois Energy was again emphasized as the energy of both the Earth and Unicron, suggesting that its mixture with Gaia Energy was thorough enough to make the two become one with each other.
