Diver Shabon

The Diver Shabon (ダイバーシャボン) is one of Diver's signature moves and remarkably versatile. Using two sets of pipes on his back, he can produce large quantities of resilient soap bubbles for purposes covering the entire spectrum of attack, defend, and incapacitate. As a means of attack, the bubbles may explode upon impact and the force with which Diver expels them can give the numerous bubbles the destructive qualities of a waterspout. On the less aggressive end, Diver can also erect a wall of bubbles to take the impact of an enemy attack or create one huge bubble to temporarily encase living beings and objects alike either to protect them or to render them harmless.
Fiction
[edit]Beast Wars II cartoon
[edit]After a white lion saved the Convoy Unit from a debilitating forcefield, Diver unleashed torrents of Diver Shabon bubbles that along with Bighorn's Horn Thunder forced Starscream and BB to retreat. The New Forces Arrive! When Bighorn was out of energy from fighting Powerhug, Diver saved him from Starscream's Screamwinder by intercepting the shot with a wall of bubbles. Thereafter, he aimed his Diver Shabon at Starscream and encased the Combatron in a giant bubble. Starscream escaped with relative ease and retaliated by firing multiple shots at Diver, but he in turn caught each missile in a bubble, rendering them harmless. Friend or Foe? The Insect Robos
Beast Wars II comic
[edit]When Bighorn, Risuko, and Risue were threatened by a large rock flying their way, Diver broke it apart by shooting it with his Diver Shabon. He also used it in battle against the Predacons on Nemesis. All Hands, Make a Special Attack on the Evil Planet!
Notes
[edit]- The pipes Diver shoots Diver Shabon from are the fingers of each of his beast mode's front legs, which in robot mode are stored on his back. In the cartoon, there are three digits used per leg and the thumb is inactive, while in the comic four digits per leg emit bubbles.
- Shabon directly translates to "soap", but that translation doesn't cover the cultural flavoring. A loanword from when the :}}Japan–Portugal relations| soap to Japan, shabon was the Japanese word for "soap" until it got replaced by sekken during the :}}Meiji era|. Over the next century, shabon remained in use, but only in set expressions or to intentionally sound archaic. Due to the 1923 nursery rhyme ":}}Shabondama|", it has in particular stayed relevant as the preferred word to use when talking specifically about soap bubbles and although it does not mean "soap bubble" per se, the association is strong. Because of the cultural nuance, it was decided to leave "shabon" untranslated here.
- Diver Shabon was likely inspired by Shabon Spray, the signature attack of fellow nerd Sailor Mercury from :}}Sailor Moon|.
