The Lio Convoy Unit is a Maximal team from the Beast Wars II portion of the Generation 1 continuity family.

The Lio Convoy Unit (ライオコンボイ部隊 Lio Convoy Butai), known as just the Convoy Unit (コンボイ部隊 Convoy Butai) back when Lio Convoy was just Convoy, is a unit within the Maximal army that consists of six soldiers and one NAVI. They are either stationed in a space station near Gaia or in a base on Gaia.

Their crew consists of:

  • Lio Convoy, the kind but goal-oriented leader.
  • Apache, the no-nonsense second-in-command.
  • Bighorn, the hot-headed but soft-hearted muscles.
  • Diver, the conflict-avoiding engineer and aquatic soldier.
  • Tasmania Kid, the young and reckless saboteur.
  • Scuba, reclusive yet pun-prone ninja and aquatic soldier.
  • NAVI, the vibrant NAVI in control of the Yukikaze and its larger network.

Later on, Lio Junior, Skywarp, and Santon become integrated in the Lio Convoy Unit, but it's ambiguous if they actually become part of it.

After Convoy was lost in space and Apache had resorted to mourning through inebriation, the Convoy Unit slouched through their days until Maximal Army Central Headquarters contacted them that odd things were happening in Gaia and that they should investigate. There wasn't much energy to do so until Bighorn took the lead and ordered everyone to the Yukikaze, Apache following uncomfortably behind as the intoxication waned. The first sign of trouble came when the Yukikaze was shot down by a beam from Gaia, forcing all to evacuate in lifepods and, once planetside in the North Continent, to scan for beast modes to survive the atmosphere. All members found each other as they made their way to a suspicious black fog, but were caught off-guard when they were thrown on the deck of the Galvaburg II, incapacitated, and taken aim at by the Combatrons. When all seemed lost, a white lion appeared and saved the Convoy Unit, leading them away The New Forces Arrive! to the crashed Yukikaze afterwards. Once inside, they were greeted by NAVI, who told them that inside the ship their battle modes weren't affected by the atmosphere outside. When they had settled, the white lion transformed and revealed himself to be Convoy, now Lio Convoy, who had ended up on Gaia earlier and survived thanks to the care of a white lion whom he scanned for his beast mode. Happy as the reunion was, the Maximals had to get moving to protect the planet from the Predacons' attempt to harvest its Angolmois Energy. White Lion, Run! The unit's first order of business was to figure out where the Predacons had even taken the Galvaburg II to, Bighorn's Rage followed by a rescue mission to get Tasmania Kid safely out of the Predacons' recently built lake fortress, The Lake Trap a resilient battle against an overwhelming number of fortress-building saucers, and a confrontation with Galvatron and his newly acquired drill tank and dragon modes. Between their fights with the Predacons, the Lio Convoy Unit detected a strong energy reading in the South Continent and used the Yukikaze's twin tenders to make the trip over to investigate. They discovered a mysterious pyramid and inside it they met Mantis, an Insectron who had been living on Gaia since long before the Lio Convoy Unit arrived. Mantis attacked them for disturbing his peace, but an act of kindness by Lio Convoy meant the fight ended with a door opened. Mystery of the Ancient Ruins

Because it was raining like it'd never end, the Maximals chose to skip on their regular patrols and stay inside the Maximal Gaia base. Diver was the one exception and as such it was he who discovered the Predacons' latest plan of attack: the awesome power of the Galvatron Dekazura Tank. He sent out a message to his colleagues, who joined forces with the Insectrons to attack the heavily armored tank. When it became clear that their weapons were useless against it, Apache came up with a plan to lure the tank into a river where Diver and Scuba would be waiting with explosives to attach to the underside of the tank, which Apache estimated to not be as heavily armored. The plan was a success and the tank thus flooded, the Maximals won easily. Demolish the Superdreadnought Tank!

While the Lio Convoy Unit was recuperating in the medical room, Lio Convoy awoke early as a voice called him to Point KS-9. He left in a Maximal Reconnaissance Ship and was followed by Tasmania Kid, who met up with him later and together they discovered the underground weapons facility. They were attacked by Galvatron, who dismembered Tasmania Kid, revealed that he had obtained a dragon mode, Infiltrate the Mystery Island! and infected Lio Convoy with evil Angolmois Energy. Meanwhile, Scuba found Tasmania Kid because a while back he had placed a tracker in his ear. Before patching up his colleague, Scuba sent out a Surumerang Signal for the others of their unit to see, learn what was going on, and come over to the island as soon as possible. While the others joined forces with the Jointrons for the rescue mission, Scuba and Tasmania Kid followed the scent of Angolmois Energy to the Mother Computer and learned that the dragon Galvatron had downloaded was a biological weapon. To their surprise, they were joined by Optimus Primal, who led them outside to witness the fight between Lio Convoy and Galvatron. Lio Convoy one, but his mind affected by Angolmois Energy, he turned against his own troops. He came close to killing Apache, after which Optimus Primal intervened and cured Lio Convoy through the connection between them as Convoys. This was not a permanent cure, however, and Lio Convoy knew he had to go out to train alone if he wanted to stay master of his own mind. Free the Captured Matrix!

With Lio Convoy off training, the Lio Convoy Unit was left to deal with some matters on their own, starting with the arrival of the Seacons on Gaia and the immediate crush Bighorn developed on Scylla. Because he had Scuba write and deliver a love letter to Scylla, she thought it was Scuba who fancied her and promptly proposed marriage. Scuba said yes believing he was understood to be speaking for Bighorn, ultimately leading to an awkward wedding ceremony in which Scylla violently rejected the groom and picked her beloved Scuba up from the guests. It led to a fight between Bighorn and Scuba ostensibly for Scylla's hand in marriage, but in truth Scuba was only defending himself. It might not have been resolved with both left standing had the Predacons not attacked, necessitating Scylla, Bighorn, and Scuba to work together to beat them back. Afterwards, the Seacons went back into space and no hard feelings were left between Bighorn and Scuba. Realize the Forbidden Love! Having received a report by the Insectrons that the Predacons had built an Angolmois Energy-powered weapon base that could destroy the Maximal Gaia base, Apache contacted Maximal Army Central Headquarters with a request for a Convoy-class soldier. The signal was picked up by Star Upper, who went to Gaia and presented himself as the requested reinforcement. The Maximals believed him and on his orders, they flew in with a medium-sized spaceship and parachuted down for a surprise attack. Unfortunately, it was a trap and everyone but Star Upper got mowed down. Only Tasmania Kid remained conscious long enough to express his faith in Star Upper in response to him crying about his deceit. It inspired Star Upper to give it his all and he did defeat Gigastorm before Lio Convoy returned and dealt with the remaining Predacons. When the Lio Convoy Unit came to, he and Tasmania Kid kept quiet about Star Upper's lie and let him leave with dignity. As a result, when the real reinforcements, Magnaboss arrived on Gaia three days later, four of the Lio Convoy Unit thought that he was a fake and the two others didn't know whether to expose Star Upper after all or let Magnaboss take the fall. Make a Surprise Attack on the Super Weapon Base!

One day, Lio Convoy wrecked Apache's personal room in a drunken rampage and not knowing this, Apache accused Tasmania Kid of the crime because of the youngster's history of pranks. All Maximals present believed him to be the perpetrator, which caused Tasmania Kid to run away in tears. Lio Convoy showed his face soon enough to take the blame he'd earned and desperate to apologize Apache went to the communication room to contact Tasmania Kid. By this time, Tasmania Kid had been captured by the Combatrons-turned-Cyborg Beasts and locked up in a cage to be dunked in Angolmois Energy and be turned into Cyborg Beast Kid. Hellscream took Apache's call and gave him one hour to save his colleague. Contrary to his image of an old coot, Apache was a highly skilled soldier with a secret stash of all manner of weapons. When he arrived to save Tasmania Kid, he readily defeated the Cyborg Beasts. The other Maximals freed the youngster from the cage in the meantime, and both beaten and without hostage, the Cyborg Beasts left the victory to the Lio Convoy Unit. Recover the Bonds Lost!

During his off-time, Bighorn had befriended two squirrels whom he named Risuko and Risue. When Gaia came under attack by the artificial planet Nemesis, Bighorn took them with him to the safety of the Maximal Gaia base. There, the gathered Maximals learned that Galvatron intended for Nemesis to absorb all of Gaia's Angolmois Energy in order for it to explode and cause another Big Bang. Lio Convoy held himself responsible for failing to see the bigger goal Galvatron was working towards and volunteered to go up against the Predacons alone. However, Optimus Primal appeared to warn him that due to his remaining sensitivity to Angolmois Energy, it was as good as a suicide mission. On top of that, Risuko and Risue started dying along with their home planet. With all this known, Bighorn signed up to save his friends, Tasmania Kid to save Lio Convoy, Diver out of sympathy for Bighorn, Scuba because he'd already read all his books, and Apache because he would always be at Lio Convoy's side. Thus decided, the Lio Convoy Unit, Risuko and Risue, and the other planetside Maximals boarded the Yukikaze, the starship that had once brought the Lio Convoy Unit to Gaia, and set out towards Nemesis. They started the counterattack by flying the starship into Nemesis's eye, unboarding just before impact to launch a successful surprise attack on the Predacon forces. All Hands, Make a Special Attack on the Evil Planet! In the end, it came down to the battle between Lio Convoy and Galvatron. Galvatron dunked Lio Convoy in Angolmois Energy to make him succumb to it once more, but Risuko and Risue sent out a telepathic message to the animals of Gaia to lend their lifeforce and save Lio Convoy's true self. The call was heeded and the animals' life force turned him into the Green Warrior. With one focussed Matrix Attack, Lio Convoy ended Galvatron. The Nemesis still exploded, but it did not cause another Big Bang, sparing the life the Maximals had fought for but scattering all Maximals across time and space. Win the Battle of Light and Darkness! The six members of the Lio Convoy Unit ended up on a different planet each, where each of them found themselves successors. The Beast Wars "Neo" Begin!!!
