Dream Eater is a Beastformer from the Generation 1 continuity family.
I believe you can get me through the night.

You will rarely see Dream Eater (ドリームイーター Dorīmu Ītā) on the battlefield. The Emperor of Uruk and an educator by nature, he prefers to use his strange gifts of telekinesis and hypnosis to help his fellow Beastformers. Capable of emitting alpha waves to promote rest and meditative mindsets in others, he can also manipulate others' dreams, planting suggestions, ideas and knowledge. He's even perfected "The Dream Method", a way for anyone to learn in their sleep, which he's even written up and published as a long-selling book.

But those talents can be weaponized, and he will do so to protect his homeworld. He prefers to seeks out enemies in their sleep, invading their dreams, planting visions and causing insomnia, leaving them weakened and unable to fight at all, preventing battles from happening in the first place. And his Quick Dreamer blade lives up to its name, capable of emitting a low-frequency hypnotic wave that can put any living being into a deep sleep.

It's a good thing he's nice.

Released in the third series of Takara's Beastformers toys, Dream Eater is a white anthopomorphic tapir in green robotic armor. His left arm ends in a two-fingered thumbless robotic claw. The Battle Emblem on his chest reveals one of three symbols when warmed up; Fire, Water or Wood.
During this line, Dream Eater was only available in the Burstsun Special Set (バーストサンスペシャルセット Bāsutosan Supesharu Setto) multipack. This blindpacked set contains 10 figures out of a potential 14. Thankfully, these were not randomly-packed, and came in two distinct lineups.
The first version has White Leo with an exclusive "Burstsun" Battle Emblem, Black Jaguar, Būpink, Dog Hunter, Dream Eater, Muskhorn, Pangol, Slo, White Cow, and Udan.
The second version has Ghost Alligatron, Black Jaguar, Būpink, Crowmax, Earthhog, Mingo Kid, Pangol, Slo, White Cow, and Udan.

Re-released in the Transformers-less Beastformers sequel series, Dream Eater was given a straight re-release with new packaging and a new, more filled-out bio card with corrected coloring. This new card also gave his weapon, now branded an "MVP Weapon", the name "Quick Dreamer" (クイックドリーマー Kuikku Dorīmā). Speaking of the weapon, there is also a chance he could come with the weapon from one of the other Beastformers in his shipping case; matching the Beasts with their same-numbered weapons was part of the "role-playing game" attached to the line, encouraging kids to buy more of the toys.
He was sold in the second assortment of individually-packed Beastformers, with a peg-hole in the top flap, and a sticker on the bottom with his name and role on it. This series did not have any kind of "rare card" random pack-in promotion.
Late in the run, the "mood ring" styled rubsigns were replaced with new rubsigns that revealed full-color Fire/Wood/Water images on black backdrops. (These rubsign variants also happened at the same time in the Hasbro Battle Beast version of the line.)

  • Dream Eater's name and nickname are references to the [[wikipedia:{{#if:|:}}Baku (spirit)|{{#if:baku|baku|Baku (spirit)}}]], a dream-eating spirit vaguely similar to the tapir (probably most famous outside of Japan for inspiring the Pokémon Drowzee). Thus his 1988 bio card gives him the nickname "Baku-san" (バクさん).
  • The original line-art for Dream Eater/Torrential Tapir drastically miscolors him with black fur and a gold weapon. The "RPG"-era Beastformers release corrected this on the bio card, giving him the proper white fur and gray weapon. It also rotated his left arm upward to make the art fill the space on the card more.
  • Meanwhile, the Burstsun Special Set painted box art shows him with tan fur. It kept his claw-hand "white" though.
