Drill Nuts (ドリルナッツ Doriru Nattsu) is an inventor, or at least he tries to be. His inventions work, which is great, but the problem is that they tend to serve no useful function whatsoever. From boomerang bombs to solar-powered nightlights, his worthless contraptions are practically an art form. Drill Nuts's passion for invention is indisputable, but the more pressing debate is simply... why?

In battle, Drill Nuts is at his most useful when he burrows underground to set booby-traps to ensnare or explode his unsuspecting foes. In direct combat, he's considerably less effective. Although his drill weapon is dangerous in melee situations, his love of inventing has no "off" switch. Drill Nuts will frequently lose focus in a fight when one of his gadgets malfunctions, stopping everything he's doing to tinker with his work, oblivious to the missiles bombarding him on all sides.

"Good news, everyone! I've taught the toaster to feel love."

Drill Nuts and the Insectrons were wanderers of the galaxy in search of peace. During those wanderings, they came into conflict with the Autorollers. Drill Nuts in particular fell afoul of Autojetter. Danger! Scissor Boy

Eventually, he and the Insectrons settled on the planet Gaia. Fiercely territorial, they defended their lands in the South Continent when the Maximals and Predacons arrived. Starscream of the Predacons enacted a long-term scheme to manipulate the Insectrons into believing the Maximals were their true foes. Drill Nuts worked on a warning system to detect hostility and identify their opponents. When Starscream and BB fired upon the Maximals, they lured them into an encounter with the Insectrons. Drill Nuts's scanner detected no hostile intent from the flyers, but the aggressive Bighorn demonstrated "infinite hostility", prompting a fight between the Maximals and Insectrons.

As they squared off, Drill Nuts confronted Diver. After launching a series of missiles at his opponent, however, one of Drill Nuts's rounds didn't explode. He became obsessed with finding the flaw in that missile, and absent-mindedly stopped his attack in order to take it apart right there on the ground. A bemused Diver awkwardly came over and started to help Drill Nuts examine the munitions. This encounter and similar ones by his friends led the Maximals to realize the Insectrons weren't inherently their enemies. Friend or Foe? The Insect Robos

"Those of you who volunteered to be injected with praying mantis DNA, I've got some good news and some bad news."

Starscream's next plot lured the Insectrons to Mikazuki Island with the promise of an oil party. Drill Nuts arrived with Powerhug, Bigmos and Tonbot, and a recording from the Predacon told them to start without him. The super-refined oil quickly put the Insectrons into a drunken state, starting a brawl between them. The Maximals and remaining Insectrons arrived to stop the squabbling, and the two groups joined forces against an equally plastered Galvatron, who had inadvertently gotten into the same stash of spiked oil. In the aftermath, the Maximals and Insectrons made peace. The Strongest Tag Team?

With the Maximals no longer considered a threat, the Insectrons made plans to get the Predacons off their lands. Scissor Boy decided to give the Maximals a data disc with all their knowledge on the Autorollers from past encounters, while Drill Nuts and Powerhug tested out the new and improved hostility detector. Unfortunately, Drill Nuts's invention still wasn't particularly reliable. Meanwhile, Scissor Boy and Tasmania Kid got captured by the Autorollers, who wanted the location to the Insectron's lair. Boy and Kid intended to lead them into an ambush at the Maximal base instead. Drill Nuts and Powerhug weren't in on the plan, though, and when they saw their comrades held hostage, they started a landslide. Powerhug was confident Kid and Boy were skilled enough to avoid the rocks. That...was a mistake. The various combatants ended up at the feet of Megastorm and the Galvaburg II instead. Fortunately, the other Maximals arrived and together they and the Insectrons overcame the Predacons. Drill Nuts and Powerhug apologized for messing up the ambush plan, but Drill Nuts was content that his detector was now giving an accurate reading...there was no hostility between the Maximals and Insectrons anymore. Danger! Scissor Boy

Megastorm soon organized a mass offensive by the Predacons, prompting the Maximals and Insectrons to fight together again. Drill Nuts continued to work on perfecting his hostility detector, much to Scissor Boy's skepticism. Predacon General Offensive!

Drill Nuts joined the other Insectrons acting as recon for Lio Convoy. They reported to the Maximals when Majin Zarak arrived at Point B-2, a narrow box canyon that would put the behemoth Predacon at a strategic disadvantage. Lio Convoy in Imminent Danger!

Drill Nuts then agreed to work with Lio Convoy in designing several countermeasures to stop the encroaching Nemesis before it could reach Gaia and steal all the Angolmois Energy. His first design was for a freeze ray that would solidify the Angolmois Energy. Unfortunately, the energy proved too unstable and the plan failed. The Great Angolmois Freezing Tactic Drill Nuts next designed a powerful cannon run on Angolmois Energy that could blast the Nemesis, destroying it. After much struggling, Lio Junior was able to evade Galvatron and fire the cannon. Once again, Drill Nuts' calculations were off and the blast petered out just short of impacting the artificial planet. NAVI berated Drill Nuts for his poor math. Knock Out Nemesis Following this failure, NAVI took charge as the lead designer on a launching platform, though Drill Nuts still provided input. He and the other Insectrons helped the Maximals complete it in secret so that Lio Convoy could travel to Nemesis and destroy it in space. Fly Out! Planet Gaia

Drill Nuts was part of Lio Convoy's elite special operations unit, the Pack. The Ascending #1

When the Pack arrived on Earth, Drill Nuts found himself helping to restrain an Angolmois-powered Razorbeast, complaining all the way about having to use wooden stakes to do it. Lio Convoy later ordered him to prepare the Pack's transwarp cruiser for a return to Cybertron to help combat Shokaract's ascension. The Ascending #3

Back on Cybertron, Drill Nuts was blasted when Shokaract's heralds arrived on the scene, and it is unknown if he survived the battle. The Ascending #4

Drill Nuts was constantly mis-colored as his mold-mate, the Predacon Drill Bit, over the course of this series. Just remember; in issue #4, Drill Nuts is on Cybertron and Drill Bit is on Earth.

  • Drill Nuts (ドリルナッツ, 1998)
Released in the fifth wave of Beast Wars II products in Takara's Beast Wars toyline, Drill Nuts is a redeco of the Hasbro Beast Wars Predacon Drill Bit toy, transforming into an organic [[wikipedia:{{#if:|:}}boll weevil|{{#if:||boll weevil}}]]. His "Nuts Drill"-arm can be flipped out for use in beast mode, and uses a gear-wheel system to spin the bit, activated by turning the rubber-banded wheel on its underside.
The original Drill Bit mold appears to have an engineering defect; the pegs on the insect-leg parts are pointed in the wrong direction to fit into the holes intended for them. This defect was not fixed for Drill Nuts.

Notes

[edit]
  • Drill Nuts's gray plastic has a brown tinge to it, something that is only noticeable under certain light sources and can't always be picked up by the naked eye or on camera, leading to some different depictions in media. The Beast Wars II cartoon and The Ascending comics by IDW would color these parts much, much more brown, while the Beast Wars Sourcebook went with gray.
